  • Dr Shirley Sherwood Presents: 'Yellow Flag' by Celia Hegedus.

This painting is a wonder to behold.

It's of the Iris pseudacorus, a herbaceous perennial characterised by its gorgeous yellow flowers which bloom from late spring to early summer. It's a water Iris, largely found growing next to ponds or in bogs.
Celia Hegedus has used one of its common names, 'Yellow Flag' to name her piece. However, you may have also heard it termed, 'Jacob's Sword', 'Daggers', 'Water Flag' and 'Yellow Fleur-de-lis' as it's had many names over the years.

Painted on vellum, Celia has managed to achieve luxuriously luminous and vibrant colours, all cradled together by a confident composition. As Dr Sherwood mentions, Celia is so meticulous and her work has an almost photographic quality as a result.

The painting is currently displayed at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery for The Wonderful World of Water Plants exhibition - make sure to grasp the opportunity and pay it a visit!
