Learn how I am storing my DVD and Blu-ray collection in a small amount of space for a low cost. This works on shelving or storing them in boxes. Both ways save you plenty of space and a lot of DVD cases that you can get rid of.

Just wanted to say that you aren't alone in this. This is a good solutiom for people like me / us who have a big collection and don't have the space for it. Even if I had space I would try to find an efficient way to get access to my films.
      For the people who disagree:
And no I dont just buy everything. I buy stuff I love and I know am going to watch again and again. If you love films like me you never stop collecting. It started with videotapes and now it's 4k and normal blu-rays. Collecting videotapes was insanity. Twice my shelves caved. Once on me. I thought to myself, well, if I have to go then what better way than by something I love.

I started back in September taking all of mine out of the store-bought case and putting them in 7 mm thin cases does it quite save as much space as your idea however I really like it it works great if you live in a confined space with very little room. Right on, Don't Quote Us!! I like yr method of saving space (which I've recently discovered in a number of YTube vids). Apparently a number of "purists" can't handle yr method, but I think it's a great compromise between conserving space and caring for DVDs/Blu Rays. I have about 300 of them that take up too much space, and am looking forward to "downsizing" and organizing them! Most of us don't have an entire room or even an entire wall to dedicate to media storage.

I have a huge cd collection. Some discs were ruined by carrying them in cases about 20 years ago while in high-school. I would leave the cases in the car and this made the plastic of the cases soft and stick to the disc. It would sometimes cause disc rot. What I hate is the older DVD collection cases that are huge. I had the entire 10 season Stargate SG-1 collection. Each season case was about 2.5 inches thick with 5 DVD cases in an outer case to hold them. I got rid of all of the cases and just put them on a 50 disk spindle in order.
At least the blu-ray cases are smaller and thinner than the DVD ones. Still, when you have over 500 (lost count) like me, it begins to take up way too much space.

To each their own, but in my view, as much as I like having things physically I would actually say keep things in cases and create a personal maximum of what you are allowed to have in your own home. A shelf? A bookcase? An entire wall? An entire room with rollwall archives? Set a maximum and end it there. Flipping through plastic pockets like this is just sad in my opinion, like scrolling through the rejected $1 dvds in the supermarket. It's nice to own it, but it feels unworthy. @@dontquoteus5379 Any time your disc surfaces are touched (and not only that, but pressed against), you risk damaging the surfaces. That's why it's recommended to use the original cases, because they don't touch the disc surfaces. If you need to save space, then you need to save space. But let's not have any delusion about not risking damages. The industry used to sell eco-friendly thin paper cases not unlike the ones you use, but it stopped due to customer complaints and returns. I would keep the valuable OOP discs in their original cases if I were you.

@@dontquoteus5379 Multi-disc cases are a nightmare for sorting your discs so avoid those, as you want each disc to move freely to allow easy sorting. If your collection keeps growing, then any space-saving solution is only temporary. If your collecting hobby is long-term, then you need a solution that is long-term. If buying digital is not for you, then you need to look into improving your storage design and storage efficiency. Next time you move into a new home, make storage design a top priority. Or you can improve the space efficiency in your current home.

Throwing away your DVD cases is like removing and discarding the covers of all your books just to save space. In my opinion, it doesn't make much sense, and you should save the DVD cases because they provide protection against dropping and scratching, not to mention some DVDs are valuable.

Not really... it would be more like moving the book to a kindle. That's the space savings I am getting. Also, I can buy empty cases for ten cents or less if I ever needed to get them back. 3,000 DVDs are too much to keep in cases.

The discs are stored in felt backed sleeves inside the larger sleeves. I have inserted and removed them plenty of times and they don't scratch up. I'll show it on today's video of my latest Dollar Tree finds.

This gives me anxiety. DVDs scratch way too easily. Plus, you're removing them from the cases yet storing the cases in boxes in the basement. Now you have two spaces in your house taken up by your collection. Seems silly.

DVDs can scratch easily, but to scratch deep enough to actually damage the data layer takes more effort. See here: www.clir.org/pubs/reports/pub121/sec3/#:~:text=The%20metal%20layer%20in%20ROM,%2C%20silver%20alloy%2C%20or%20silicon. The disc can sustain damage and still be fully readable as evidenced by many used DVDs I have purchased that have had no read errors yet looked destroyed on the surface.
I have recycled or gave away the old cases, so they are not taking up any space now. I will be doing a video where I show off the collection in just the Snap-N-Store DVD Storage Boxes. I love how it looks and how easy it is to find discs.

Well, many coming to this channel are probably like me and looking to own movies cheaply before the supply of physical media dries up and we are at the whim of the "streaming gods". For "serious collectors", nobody is forcing you to do this. Different people have a different amount of space they want to dedicate to a collection of movies. This is just another alternative.

People usually would only watch a particular movie once a year or even less so discs wouldn't be removed that often. For movies you watch often then it is best to keep them in a case.
