    I was listening back to an old podcast from the beginning of Sierra Unfiltered and you guys were talking about how Skylar wore something she didn't feel great in her for engagement photo shoot and she literally said something along the lines of "I should've just worn like a cute jumpsuit that's comfy and that I felt confident in" and then months later she chose that maroon jumpsuit for her maternity shoot!!!! Ahhh my heart

    As a person living with PTSD who is quite sensitive to certain topics like sexual abuse and animal cruelty, I personally really appreciate content warnings and hope it comes from a place of ignorance when people misuse the word "triggered."

    I feel so awful that people constantly assume that someone is pregnant. You never know what someone is going through, and those comments, while coming from a not intentionally harmful place, can be so harmful. Sending you lots of love and positivity Sierra, and same to Skylar as you work on your home and bring baby P into the world!

    This is not to slander Skylar because I do this as well and realized it during this conversation but I think that explaining yourself has a lot to do with the fact that you believe your way is the correct way and so when you say for example you’re doing wooden toys, even if someone doesn’t ask why you’re doing that, you have to validate it with studies and facts because you want to know that what you’re doing is the correct way to do things. I struggle with this in “judging people” because I validate my decisions by trying to convince people that it’s the only right way, when realistically there are a lot more ways than one to live life and make decisions correctly.

    • @dianeandbrad529
      @dianeandbrad529 4 роки тому +2

      Hannah Bustos She did also add that she feels she has to explain how her choices are morally or ethically "right". It comes across as more of a "ted talk" than an explanation or conversation.. I think it's good that she identified this for herself and can see that she does this... it'll be interesting to see how she comes across on the podcast as 2020 happens since she says she's working on it.

    Something that helped me to be less judgmental is to search for what’s called a “shared reality.” On most polarizing issues both sides share the same goal but are trying to solve it in completely different ways.
    For example, (and no one come at me - I’m not saying these are my opinions! This is just an example) you brought up guns. So I’ve searched for the shared reality between the pro gun rights and pro gun control sides, and I believe what they both want at their core is safety. One side believes having guns in the hands of good people will help people to be safe while the other side believes restricting guns so that only trusted government official have access will help people to be safe.
    By identifying the shared realities of these polarizing issues, I’ve been able to detach myself from negative emotions and stereotypes. If I can see that the other person is just like me - someone who wants their friends and families and our communities to be safe - I can act with compassion rather than judgment.
    Love you girls and hope you have the best new year!

    Hey Guys,
    I think it would be interesting to talk with Stephen about the experiences you made in your teenage years in terms of relationships and being open/ comfortable about your sexual desires etc. I think especially for teenagers its important to also learn about consent or not being ashamed of themselves. Who taught you that and how do you convey that to a generation that is growing up in a time where media hypersexualizes many things.
    Btw thanks for your amazing Podcasts!
    Love,
    Johanna

    As a vegetarian myself, I have my reasons and I have my peace with my life choices in that arena. I don't do it as a way to be better than someone else, to be morally or ethically superior... I don't judge others or think those who eat meat are less ethical than I am. I think types of choices like this, you ultimately have to do it for yourself and not to change the world, or be a martyr...
    Things like life choices, politics, religion... we have to see beyond these subjective opiniated topics, and get to know the person without putting people in boxes or hierarchies based on labels.

    • @dianeandbrad529
      @dianeandbrad529 4 роки тому +1

      Maeve Jones I didn't like the taste anyway, but I also did it because I didn't feel right about consuming the products coming from animals under those conditions. If I wanted to eat meat, which I don't, I would probably feel better doing so from local farms who are known for truly giving animals a natural life as much as possible. My life itself hasn't changed much at all as a result? It sometimes makes eating out a little bit boring when going out with a group and they are all sampling different appetizers or whatever... but that's very rare occasion and isn't at all enough to make me reconsider. I have learned to get creative and get side dishes or whatever when eating out..
      I still meal plan and grocery shop like anyone else.. and prepare meals... I do think it makes cleaning up dinner prep easier since I don't have to worry as much about salmonella, etc.. It's a choice I made and it's not something that really effects me on a day to day or I think about regularly.🤷‍♀️

    Pregnancy is such a personal thing. the only thing worse than what you said is when you tell someone you are pregnant and they are disappointed. I once had someone say I thought we all decided you weren't going to have any more children. Really, the only correct response is congratulations in that scenario. A simple hug if someone finds they aren't pregnant and wants to be should be plenty, but only if you are close enough to warrant a hug. We are all so opinionated about how everyone else should live their lives we forget to be kind. I include myself because I am sure i have blind spots as well.

    Yes Skylar!!! That would be my one piece of mom advice for you is to take pictures! I have an 18 month old and i did take a decent amount, but i accidentally went a few weeks at a time and didn’t take any because we weren’t doing anything exciting and i didn’t think about it. and now i’m sad that i have hardly any picture of when he was “x amount of months old”. so obviously you will take pictures when you are doing something fun and for all the milestones, but remember to take pictures on other occasions too! they change so much every day and you’ll never regret having a photo, but you might regret not having enough photos. And remember to take pictures of him with you and Kyle well! We definitely forgot to do that. Even if you don’t feel photo ready, take the pictures. you won’t regret them. Sending you good thoughts for labor and delivery! Good luck mama, you got this! 💕💕💕

    I totally relate to Skylar on judging others for their choices. This is going to be contradictory, but .... there are certain decisions that others make that absolutely affect you or society as a whole, political stuff specifically because policies matter. Also not everyone starts at the same place and so progress is relative. So one person was raised right and they are slightly woke compared to someone who was raised in a racist household and now they actively disavow racism, but they don’t full understand systemic racism. One person on the surface seems more woke, but the other has made more progress. Skylar I would love to listen to a different podcast of you giving political commentary. I love this podcast exactly as it is and I don’t want it to change, but I would like an additional podcast from you. Lol.

    Love you both! Since Stephen is going to be your guest co-host for a bit...it would be so cool to do an episode about the back end of the UA-cam business and the journey of scaling (taxes, s corp, etc.)! Of course no personal details, but more what the process looks like. Maybe I am the only one but I find that side of things fascinating! I am been toying around with starting a channel with my friends but the idea of making an income off it is what stops me because the business side and taxes and all that is so intimating! I wonder if there are other potential creators that hold themselves back because they are worried about the "managing a business" side of things and all the "grown-up" things that come with that!

    For Skylar, AAA has a free book to members about every place to go in San Diego. It will really surprise you as to how many different things there are to do.

    I can SO relate with the moral compass issue. I'm pretty hard on myself in developing and following a moral compass, but it's also an evolving work in progress, so I'm trying not to judge people who are in a different place or have come to a different conclusion than me.

    Re: the pregnancy speculations. I knew one of my co-workers was going to start trying at some point during last year. One day she commented on the smell of smth I couldn't smell. My thought was "she could be pregnant", but because I respect her and that question can be hurtful for a lot of people, I said nothing. Ten minutes later she told me she was like 3 weeks and 3 days pregnant. And there are co-workers who I suspected were pregnant that I never asked and found out along with everyone else when they started showing. One girl I thought was going to tell me she was pregnant, bc I knew she was trying, had a miscarriage the day before she had planned to tell me (her friend) like.... *you don't ask or publicly speculate*.
    I do hope that you've got a bright positive test now, but if you did not I'm hoping one isn't too far in the future for you.

    I used to say to someone who had one child you will be having another soon. I didn't know what she had already been through be to have one child. Won't do that again..

      Angela Corcoran I used to think it was so important for children to have siblings and then I had my first child and knew only having one was the right choice for my family mentally, physically and financially. There are too many stigmas around only children but they can grow up just as well adjusted as kids with siblings

    Love this!! Skylar, my cousins all use the app lifecake to take pictures of their babies, and they only “share” access with a few family/friends! It’s so cute since it’s organized by date to see how much they’ve grown, without perfectly filtered pictures like insta and other platforms! Highly recommend checking it out 😊

    Love the podcast.
    A note about audio: volume is too low. Normally only need a little volume to hear your videos. This time I had to put it above half way to even hear what was being said

    Carrie Dayton, and Kenzie was fun for sure! Maybe once skylar is back they can do more of a “what was different” than they thought going into parenthood would be, at their different stages with different age kids, boy vs girl babies too. And you can ask the questions you’ve always wondered that goes along with that.
