Looks like he’s firing this in his backyard garage. Bet it pisses off the neighbors. Would’ve been cool to watch the guy lean over and light a cigarette on the nozzle after at the end.
Using Ethanol as primary rocketfuel could be quite useful in the future, because supply of alcohol sure won't go down, while RP1 is made out of Diesel which is basically made of oil. So this is even more awesome than just a rocketengine firing!
Ethanol gets gooey in the cold. Not good for a vacuum. Methane is generally a more accepted future renewable fuel, but alcohol rockets could be possible.
@@chriseffpunkt4333 Wow relax. Methane and hydrogen are both common and aerospace companies have literally no reason to make large scale ethanol engines due to their immensely lacking efficiency. Their only benefit is that they are easier to design so they can be used to learn to make an engine before moving on to more powerful propellant combinations.
Ethanol is quite bad as fuels go though and we have better alternatives. For one, theres Methalox and secondly we can use hydrolox first stage engines like the RS-25.
What a silly comparison. The RD170 is *600 Times* the thrust of the MOMO sounding rocket engine (NK33 over 100 times more, and the F-1 no longer exists). This ablative nozzle performed well apparently, with no combustion instability visible. It appeared to have some uneven nozzle heating but that may be an optical artifact. If thrust was coaxial with the engine it isn't a problem since the engine survived a full duration burn. What exactly is "not safe" (aside from it being a rocket engine)?
Looks like it might be a graphite nozzle, designed to cool the nozzle by ablating and essentially burning away on the inside to create gas that works as a protective barrier on the inside... It doesn't matter if the outside catches fire as long as the engine survives long enough to finish the mission, which is very short as it's designed for a suborbital sounding rocket.
