As the head coach Venables is taking a lot of heat. Much of it without merit. OU had a lot of injuries this past year. Much of the O-line starters and practically all their starting receivers were injured on an unprecedented level. And OU is still challenged to find a loyal identity at QB to build a cohesive offensive unit around. This is why OU struggled on offense.
Not to mention the transfer portal and NIL drama, and Lincoln Riley did not exactly leave the program in great shape. They are young and trying to rebuild, but it's a challenge to maintain a cohesive unit in the new college football era. I'm all for players doing what they can for themselves, but the timing of the transfer portal needs to be tweaked. Having players be able to bail on their team at the peak of the season during bowl games and post season is wrecking the sport. Whatever happened to not letting your teamates down and playing for the love of the game?
Changes are going to have to be made regarding the timing on the transfer portal or college football will become a joke. No loyalty anymore and everything is all about the stinking money. Players are chasing the money and opportunities instead of building success and creating opportunity where they are at. It's pathetic.

I’m a sooner fan, Zach Alley is a young coach. Maybe he knows Brent Venables is not gonna be here after next year and he wants job security.

I don't think there's anything moronic about it at all. That's probably a huge reason why he split. He should have minimum 4 years job security now, as opposed to 1. Also, he probably wants to go away from Venables as a way to create his own name. Everyone gives Venables the credit for OUs defense. He succeeds at WVU, he gets the credit.

Being on boards to me it sounds like he couldn't handle everything that Brent wanted him to do and thought he would have an easier time living up to Rich Rods standards.

I can't imagine it's Brent. I can't believe that he's the type that's hard to get along with. I imagine he expects a lot, but if you know what is expected, you roll with it. I wonder if it's boosters causing a problem with players and coaches.

@ it is outside BV in my thoughts because he knows if he doesn’t win next year he is gone yet decisions are happening that make no sense in trying to keep your job. He should fired Finley right after the bowl game for sure. He should have worked to keep Nic Anderson. He is not getting any difference makers out of the portal. G isn’t doing things that make sense. My question is why and who is calling the shots

Get another DC! Venables is a great coach, learning new ways in a new world of NIL, the portal, paid players who only care about money with little care about loyalty! Venables is loyal to OU, his players, coaches and fans! The fans need to return more support in this difficult time for Coach Venables and OU football!!

I agree with most of what you said about Nick Saban but I know for a fact he wanted Sark and his staff to stay at Bama. He wanted Sark to take over as HC in the near future as Nick was already contemplating retirement after winning the Natty in 2018. He couldn't keep them as Texas offered Sark and the whole staff lots of $$$ to coach the longhorn football team. So Nick wasn't able to keep the guys he wanted and Texas made a great move which moved their program out of a decade of mediocrity to one of national relevance.

It happens. It happens at every college and every college have players coming and going. Stop the drama this is the new college football. I think universities are going to have to quit Hugh buy outs of coaches contract. 18 year old kids now run the coach so get used to this.

  • @mattpope770

There will never be a time when BV isnt in control of his defense on some level. Will be his scheme, not the DC's scheme and probably at multiple times BV will jump in and override the play calls. Thats a hard sell for anyone that wants to be a DC. Thats not going to be an attractive selling point for any DC to come to Oklahoma. This will always be a problem for BV in the future as long as he is a head coach.

What is happening at OU is puzzling when it comes to offensive coaching staff. It is crazy that Finley is still on the staff and DeMarco is doing a terrible job with the running back room. The only difference maker from thr portal is Mateer and the rest do not move the needle for me

Cronyism and a tendency toward miserliness is behind a lot of the program's problems. Bob and Joe C. (and, apparently, a lot of the behind-the-scenes money people) have a (too) strong focus on "program guys". What's worse is the extensions Castiglione signed the staff to. It really painted the program into a corner.

@@gonzostrangelove6107 Joe C needs to retire, OU needs to hire a proven AD who knows how to build a winning program and has done it wherever he has been. This AD then needs to hire the HC and bring in one who will clean house and get the program running in the right direction, just like Texas did when they cleaned house and brought in Sark and his staff from Bama. Bob Stoops needs to stay out of the decision making process and go play golf with his buddy Steve Spurrier.

A program in steep decline. Clearly Castiglione has run Sooner football into the ditch and he can't be the guy who hires Brent's replacement. He can move to Florida with Bob Stoops who I also don't care to hear from these days. Norman has been a cushy country club for too long now. There is little accountability at the top and that's a problem.
