A quick behind the scenes look on how to make a low volume production shoe outsole molding system. www.cognitivee... www.instagram.... ryan-carney.my...
It's looks great,👍 what are the material for making that mold? Please I want to make it in home, because now I am taking the course about shoe making, help with the materials
Nice video, thanks for sharing your process. Do you think it would be possible to skip the other steps and just print a cup sole from TPU filament with an FDM printer directly?
yup for sure you can! the only problem is that if you have a bad print layer the tpu could split. need to make sure you have your printer calibrated really well
@@ryancarney111 nice video..greetings from Bangladesh. I want to consult with you for shoe sole rapid prototyping. Can I have your contact details if possible? Thanks again.
Cool video tutorial. Hey Ryan, are you able to create soles similar to the soft memory foam soles that Sketchers use? I believe those are made of " low density polyurethane". I really wanted to replace worn-out soles with it.
you probably can but you would need to consider the expansion pressure from the foam and its effects on the mold your using. since silicone stretches a bit the urethane foam could warp the mold and ruin your final product. I would maybe consider making you silicone mold in a rectangular block shape and then using hard sheets of wood or metal to completely box in the silicone mold to prevent any warpage from foam expansion.
sir, thanks a lot for sharing this, it's very, very useful! could you help me in this? I am quite sure I cannot afford the chambers, (although I have zero idea of the price) do you know a way to make the sole without those? again, thank you so much, I appreciate the effort 🥰
You can still attempt to mix and cast your urethane without the vacuum or de-gassing chambers, there will just be a higher probability of air bubbles in your final product.
Cool video, Ryan. Thanks for sharing this info. By the way, do you design custom shoe soles for an ordinary “Joe” like me? I always liked the idea of having my own sneaker/fashion line…but never knew how to start. After watching your video, a lightbulb 💡 went off in my head. Please respond.
No sorry at this time i cannot help physically manufacture a sneaker line as that would require more industrial methods of production to create an affordable price. I can however assist in design and prototyping consolations.
Could this be a way of making a Air Jordan 1 Outsole? Reason why I'm asking is because I want to make shoes from scratch, but you have to buy a whole shoe just to take off the outsole for use. Can you make the material harder as well?
sure can! this essentially the reason I did this project. you could make a silicone mold of a jordan 1 sole like i have with my project. Try looking for a jordan 1 out sole 3d CAD file to download. or try and find a donner pair of jordans.
Hi Ryan, I'm a student about to embark on the journey to develop my own shoe sole, and I am a little confused how to get started with the R&D process. Would you be willing to offer some advice on how to approach the early stages?
this equipment is relatively cheap. if i were to purchase everything for brand new top of the line quality i could be up and running with like $5,000. hardest part is air ventilation and atmosphere control. its low volume because a silicone mold like this will only last for 100 - 200 castings probably. eventually it would wear out. and is also much slower than an injection mounding system
@@ryancarney111 pretty, cool I'm planning on making a shoe, thanks for showing the process would like to see a neolite sole, just to see the differences, trying to get a shoe for a specific niche
I know higher platformed soles also have holes and inner structures to support weight to not be as heavy as a solid piece, would the rubber material you chose be able to do the same?
thanks! Yes i believe that with this method of using silicone as the mold you can get away with some small undercuts/ engravings into the side. And also yes with this method you can create internal latus structures to reduce weight for thicker soled designs. The key thing for demolding though is to have a pressurized air hose.
Hey bro I was wondering if you could make me a sample to send to my manufacturer. It’s a simple af1 sole with writing where the word “air” is. Is that job you can take on and if so, how much would you charge?
So on the 0:32 mark of the video, I see that you placed it on a bed of clay here. My questions are: What's the black rim around the sole called and what's its purpose? What material was used to create "the box"? What was the purpose of the 3 thin sticks at the top of the outsole? I get the clay spout opening, but I was curious about the sticks.
Hey the clay I used is a sulfur free plasticine. The material used to make the box is made of a styrene sheet 2mm thickness, the rim around the sole is used to create a parting line. the sticks create ventilation for the final castings.
@@ryancarney111 I see! So how was the rim created? What material was used to create the rim? Also how was the rim placed on the outsole? I'm about to make an attempt to make me a pair of boots and I came across your video. It's just that the mold making process eluded me.
Yea you could get sheet of high density EVA foam and sheet of rubber tread for resoling outsoles and some glue. Other than that you could print it with a SLA 3D printer but there a inherent issues with it typically so the design of the outsole would need to take into consideration the restraints of the material/ printer and so on
@@sell_wotb Thanks for the suggestion! i will have to think about it. it is hard for me to decide to sacrifice putting one of my out soles through a deliberately destructive wear test because they costed me a decent amount of money to produce. it would be like throwing money out the window for me as I am not making any money off of a video like this :(

Its a "de-gassing" chamber. It removes all the air within the glass dome, causing all the air bubbles to be removed from the silicone as well. If you don't remove the millions of tiny air bubbles caused from mixing the part A and part B, there's a good chance they will appear in you final mold once the silicone cures. This will cause imperfections in your final parts, which obviously isn't good. There are ways to pour silicone to reduce the chance of air bubbles but its not a guarantee.

How was this for stiffness Ryan - and how do you adjust its strength / durability, it looks a bit soft..?
