    I'm such a big fan of Karplus-Strong. It's possible to create super realistic plucked sounds with it as well as sounds from outer space ;)

    6:25 this is how i make baselines, tune in the fates't sound you can get at high frequencies(around 2-15 kHz or what ever try to match them) sequencer (8 step) output , then slow it down to your preferred bpm, and sometimes it gets real good really simple and fast for some dirty bass lines.
    This is a great video.

    Two filters self oscillating can become a complex oscillator. Makes sense. I am trying to understand the difference between an FM input and using the 1V/oct input on a filter(WMD C4rbn). The pitch (1v/oct) determines the frequency of the filter. If you modulate that (at audio rate?), is that not frequency modulation (FM)? If my filter does not have an FM input, is there an external module I can use to similarly FM the output of the filter with another source? For example, the Squawk Dirty does not have an FM input. Pretty sure I'm missing something.
    Great ideas for understanding basic concepts and being creative with audio sources. Thanks younger Mylar.

    One of my favorite filter types is comb filter. Not very common on analog gear, but a lot of analog gear has the capability of short delay, which gives you a nice comb filter.

  • @ghostsax

    you could also take the output of the bbd, send it into a low pass filter, and mix it back into the input along with the initial noise burst. then tap the output of the bbd with a mult and in that way acquire a neat sort of dampening effect over time. or stick anything else into the signal path before/after the filter and see how it turns out :3 ks is always fun to play around with.

    Hi! Nice stuff I enjoyed this
    1. shouldn't you be capacitively coupling your rapidly varying CV when you use it as an oscillator? E.g. through a passive RC high pass filter?
    2. when using the BBD device with positive feedback is there any way of controlling the feedback so it doesn't grow and get too big, other than manually? I saw you having to do this a couple of times.

      @RigatoniModular 8 років тому

      +Richard Kaye Basically all audio interfaces will AC couple the inputs, so you don't need to do it in the modular yourself.

      You can run the feedback loop thru a VCA and an envelope follower, send a negative copy of the envelope follower to the VCA’s CV in to keep it from getting too crazy. Or you can use a limiter like instruo’s TanH

    I see u r using a 1024 Doepfer BBD module. I have a 4096 myself. Am planning to get a 128 soon. I thought you needed one of the short delay types like a 256 or 128 to get Karplus strong, but apparently not!

    Man, i so want to get into modular synthesis. this looks like so much fun. Whats a good place to start if im on a budget?

    • @zwerty007
      @zwerty007 9 років тому +2

      Thomasnor1 Depends what you mean by "budget". If you're okay with DIY kits then it can be quite cheap. The biggest hurdle at the beginning, I think is the case, because they're very expensive if you don't DIY. Best idea is to go to MuffWiggler's Eurorack section and check out the beginner topics they have pinned.

      +Chartre Khan You're right - the cases are ridiculous - I finally settled on a pair of Tip Top 84 hp rails, combo rackmount / desktop end cheeks, and their Zeus power supply (which includes 2 flying bus cables) from Detroit Modular . Total cost $ 140. Just add a spare laptop power brick and you're good. If you can - Avoid the cheap rails with the sliding nuts /

    I'm sure modular is awesome from a slightly geeky point of view and as a learning tool is great! But I have to say , what's the point? Why spend half an hour patching this to that and hacking a sequencer to send out a square wave, when you can get one from any synth in 5 secs!??
    I get modular for exploring unheard territories and finding new sounds digging deep on funky modules etc . But this just seems like walking a hundred mile round trip , just to get to your next door neighbours!

      Josef Mandel I don't know if you were talking about modular hardware or modular in general, but I can definitely say software side of modular does not fit to what you describe :) It's as easy or as hard as you want, which means huge advantage for beginners and huge advantage for more experienced users. In experienced hands, modular software can actually do the opposite of what you describe - by simply putting modules in the right order and minimal tweaking you can get sounds which you would have to stand on your head for a week to emulate on a pre-routed virtual instrument. That being said, it's not something that you just HAVE to do (going modular), but it has obvious advantages on every step of the way.
      Unfortunately, besides Reaktor there ain't much quality modular mainstream software, so semi-modular like Zebra is the best thing IMHO. DAWs go increasingly "modular" though - the new Studio One for example has some fantastic routing options!

      kbprojekty hi, yea I agree. You actually make the same point! I said that modular is great for finding new, unexplored sounds. My point was why use modular in a very complicated way to replicate something so quickly and simply acquired by other means? Anyway reason is a good modular environment and the moog modular vst not bad.

    • @kbprojekty
      @kbprojekty 9 років тому

      Josef Mandel Adding modules is very quick and simple once you get your head around it, but If you find yourself frequently needing basic sounds, you can just save module configurations to have them ready for the tweaking, few clicks away. Hell, you can recreate whatever synth you want for those sounds :)

      Josef Mandel It's actually more like a staircase wave than a run of the mill square wave. Notice he can even blend between octaves by turning knobs. He's also only scratching the surface here. Some sequencers (like the Doepfer A-155) have CV inputs for individual stages, so you can create some sound morphing by CVing them. A lot of sequencers have reset and direction inputs, so that's another world of possibilities. Then you could take the different rows of the pressure points and put them through VCAs/crossfaders, so you can morph/blend between them with any modulations source you want (LFOs, Sequencers, Envelopes, Audio rate oscillators, etc.). You can't do that with a square wave oscillator.

      @mylarmelodies 9 років тому +4

      Ed Mö Thanks!! Yeah indeed - also if you use the Tiptop Z8000 you could have like ten lanes of stairstepped waves, _all going at different rates/pitches_!
