  • Solon Spruce sings as Arrow Booth, 12, demonstrates a war dance and joins Jamison Cathers, 14, to smoke dance. Smoke dancing is unique to the Haudenosaunee and is noted for its fast pace and freestyle movements. The smoke dance derives from the war dance.

yep, brutal and vicious, death by extended torture, cannibalism, then the 5 nations banded together to violently drive out the Algonquians and take over the fur trade. Not a pretty picture.

War dance or Smoke Dance both are offensive. It represents a tribe whose goal, when this is performed, is not to hunt but to kill… other humans. As a descendent of settlers has explained, this dance meant that the taking of human life was eminent. It recreates the pain and suffering that Would shortly come. This really is inappropriate for public consumption.

eh, those days are gone. Certainly the Indigenous nations warred, like all human societies. War dances occur throughout history in all parts of the world. The elegant Chinese sword dance originated as training for soldiers. Even the roots of ballet go back to fencing (not exactly war, but mortal combat). The dance of Native American warrior societies has been transformed into the men's traditional dance and no longer functions are preparation for, or recounting of, actual battles. And yeah, the traditional dance also re-enacts hunting animals for food -- not for "sport" as in the present American society, and not the hideous slaughter of animals in today's commercial abbatoirs.
