Trying to make one for my friend's Great Dane mix. She is huge! Chest is 36 inches around. Thanks for explaining the terminology. This pattern is very easy to modify, I just have to try it on her every section or so and adjust.🎉
Just finished this large sized sweater. I had so much fun crocheting this sweater, and you made a wonderful tutorial and you instructed very well! I will be making another one soon! Thank you so much for taking the time and putting out a great video!!
I'm still relatively new at crocheting, and have been wanting to make a dog sweater for as long as I have been crocheting. It has always seemed super daunting. I made this, but had to alter the size to fit my dog. It is not perfect but is so much more than I ever could've done without this video. Thank you so much, I learned so much from this tutorial!
Thanks so much for the update!, last year, I made 3 dog coats following the previous tutorial, with patience and playing the tutorial over and over, I managed it!, the dog coats came out perfect!, despite that "miss the 1st dc".
This video was AWESOME!🎉 Every step was explained perfectly. Thank you for working out any challenging areas ahead and giving tips along the way, especially the center and right side markers.👍 My pup's sweater turned out great!💖 Thank you!
Thank you so much for the tutorial, you helped me learned so much about crocheting and to successfully make a sweater for the first time following a tutorial 🐶 now i have a lot more hope in myself thanks to you!
Mikey thank you so much for this video. It was only the second thing I've made with crochet and your tutorial was fantastic. My mams Chihuahua is now strutting around nice and toasty
Yay...I finally have a purpose for my red heart reflective yarn!!! It's been in my collection for a long time waiting for the perfect pattern (other than a hat for my son)...thank you
I absolutely love this tutorial for this pattern! The first time I made it, the medium was wayyy too big for my medium dog who is about the size of the schnauzer pictured on the pattern sheet. So I’ve made modifications here and there to adjust the sizing, but I wish I knew what I was doing wrong since I followed the pattern exactly. Regardless, it’s a great pattern and this was such a thorough tutorial, thank you!
Loved it! Just finished it and I did a variegated blue n black color on main body w black leg bands and black turtleneck area. It looks camo-like! Only took me two days but thank gosh u are able to explain the way u do!
❣ The SIZE is often not ok for ur dog but EASY to ADAPT. Some dogs have bigger heads, chests or are longer. Start with collar ribbon, hold it together can u pull it over the head? Measure the chest behind the front leg and adapt, longer body like a dachshund adapt. Easy to customize. Thanks Mickey for detailed crochet❣
i really need help with this sweater i’m crocheting it for an american staffordshire terrier and his chest measurement is between L & XL what should i do
Love this pattern, it might be a little big for my two 10 pound Chi's will have to take measurements and see. Thank you for sharing and clarifying the pattern of course I'm a little older than the pattern so I knew what it was saying, 🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 your a love, thank you Mikey for all you do. 🤗🤗💞💞
Here is the general sizing by size. Small - Chihuahua or Yorkie Size Medium - Pug or Terrier Size Large - Beagle or Collie Size X-Large - Greyhound or Labrador Size
The reason they have you chain before turning is not because it’s an older pattern. It’s because when you’re doing a color change every row, you’re finishing the final yarn over of the last stitch with the new color, and chaining helps to secure it.
I love this sweater and can’t wait to make it for my dog! Thank you for sharing it! I’ve watched the video and was ready to go, until I measured my ship-tsu his chest is 19 inches. Unfortunately there’s not a size for 19 inches. It’s in between a medium and a large. Any advice for me please? I’m not sure how to adapt the pattern to suit his size
Update: the belly needs to be shorter for a male. 1 less row between nexk and beginning of the arm holes. Simple fix. Dont tie off before you check it is my suggestion. Orig post: Anyone made this for a dachshund yet? Friend says something fits right and her baby is freezing.
Can't wait to try, my fur baby needs a better sweater than the first one I made🤦 😂 Thank You for such great Tutorials and doing the math🥴 cause it's not my friend 🤗
Thanks for the pattern! I’m working on a Large size and am having some trouble with the shape leg opening step… In the written pattern, first side total is 12dc but second side is 10dc. If I follow and continue this, at the joining row, I’m unable to get the total 96dc.. Am I meant to do 12dc for second leg opening side?
I need help please...my dog's chest measures 20". I followed this pattern and it turned out too small of course. Lol. I'm scared a medium will be too large. Is there a way to make in-between sizes? Sorry if this is dumb. I haven't been crocheting very long.
Very nice sweater. Maybe my question is a little out of place, how much do you sell such a sweater, if someone asks you to crochet for his dog? I also like to crochet, and I was asked to make a sweater to a dog , but I don't know how much to sell it, not to be too expensive or too cheap.
People's value on handcrafts vary from person to person. It's hard to fight exporting as many people think something like this would be cheap. I don't sell finished projects to give any advice in this area. I donate my stuff out so I don't worry about being upset if people offer me too little for my creativity.
Help please! I’ve started making the small size for my jack Russel. The ribbing for the neck is not long enough to go around or is it done in more than one section? Thank you
So the only hooks I have close to 4mm is an F that is 3.75mm and a G that is 4.25mm what should I do about the neck ribbing? It doesn't have a measurement of how long the ribbing should be when done so I can't compare it when I'm using a different size hook
I am a little confused on the belly. I am doing the extra large, the question is on the next row of belly, where it says repeat last row 11 more times but after decreasing two rows, when I measure from 1st row after neck ribbing, I am at 26 inches. Do I stop there?
Help please. Small size. I crochet first leg section but there is no way I can fit middle section the other leg. There is no enough stitches. 40 start with. Then 10 plus 4 plus 21 plus 4 plus 10. Does not equal 40
I love this pattern! I was wondering if I could use DK yarn and if so, should I make adjustments to the pattern? I have yarn in the exact colour I want but it's DK and I'd like to use it up!
I don't know what DK is. Im unsure. There is a gauge on the pattern if you want to try and match it. Changing the yarn thickness will require the pattern to be re-written if that's what you are asking for.
Hi. I love this pattern and am attempting it for my rescue dog. Im a bit of a novice so I'm just checking - I've done the leg bands and am now doing the neck ribbing. I've done 2 rows and will continue to do another 30 rows, so 32 in total, yes? Thanks!
@@TheCrochetCrowd thank you for confirming! A few more questions please! (I'm okay with stitches, but find instructions so confusing!) I'm doing the stripe pattern. I've done the neck band and have started the body. I've done Row 1 in the Main Colour, same as the neck. At the end of Row 1 it says to Join A. First query: I'm guessing this means fasten off the Main Colour and join my first contrasting colour (A) for Row 2? Like you I will then turn and chain, in this case in the new colour. Second question: as the instructions don't say when to join colours B, C, D & E colours, I'm guessing I simply continue my colour sequence with every single row - not every 2 or 3 rows? I only ask because it doesn't state when to introduce the sequential colours other than as a generic instruction at the beginning. So finally, after Row 2 (in colour A), we repeat this row 2 more times (for small dog) - which if I do these in the next 2 colours B and C, means I am then starting the Leg Opening in colour D. Is this right?! Thanks so much!
You must have been in my head. I had just asked my extra small dogs if I needed to crochet them some sweaters. They are Chihuahua Pekinese mix and weigh about three pounds between them. They are 11 weeks old.
The printed pattern has different stitch counts for the second side except for the small size. I’m making the large size & the stitch count for the first side is 12 dc, and for the second side, its only 10 dc. That leaves 2 unused dc. For the XL size, its a difference of 3 dc. Is there a reason to not have the sides matching in width?
Hi! I have a crochet question. I have been crocheting for years, however, I took a long break when my kids were little. I picked it up again! When I switch colors I carry the end within the stitches, but I have noticed that these "tails" are poking out of the finished blanket. What is the best way to switch colors? Make a knot?
I would fasten the yarn off and weave in the tails. Start with the new colour from scratch and then weave in the tails. Use a tapestry needle for the absolute best results.
When it comes to the measurements... when it says chest, I'm assuming it means like around there belly?! Cause my 2 girls are very similar sizes, but one is bigger than the other by a few inches, but still not big enough to be considered a large. I'm worried it's gonna be too big for the smaller dog, but then too small for our larger dog. I making one for each of them, and just hoping hoping for the best! Really great tutorial though; I always look for your tutorials on projects I'm gonna do, I'm a super visual learner and your tutorials are always amazing. Thanks my dude!! 😆😆
hi, im a newbie here. Ive searched the comments but no one has had the same issue as me. I have just done the collar ribbing and am trying to move onto the body, but i cant seem to get 42 stiches in the first half (im making the XL). Where exactly am i putting the double crochet stiches? im lost even with the video and written instructions. x
I’m confused about the hook sizes. Maybe it’s because I haven’t done crochet in a few years? You’re saying the 4.0 is an F size. But my hooks say 3.75 F? Then there is 4.0 G, 4.5 7 and the K hook is now just a 7 mm no letter. Did they change the sizing system? I noticed that Boye and Susan Bates sometimes have different numbering. Or do I just have old hooks?
@@kimberlybailey7459 A G is usually a 4.0 mm hook. The 4.5 mm is a #7 hook, in between a g and 5.0 H hook. I don’t see many patterns calling for an F or #7. A lot of the crochet hook sets I’ve seen don’t include them.
You have to measure under the chest just behind the front legs over the dog. Take the circumference of the chest and you will know the size. Every dog is different. So I don't have a concrete answer for each species.
hi there, just a quick question - hopefully someone can still help. Im trying to make this for a dog, around the chest the dog needs a large size but the neck size is far too big - was wondering if anyone could please advise.
I have an American bully, what are the measurements for the large sweater? She has a larger chest like a bull dog, but shorter in length. Btw, she is in the picture
You will measure your dog's chest to determine which size would work best. If your dog is in-between the two sizes, you may need to work out the stitching to make it work for your pup. If you don't wish to try to make it work for your pup, I would suggest going with the larger size, so it is easier to get on and off them. I had an odd shaped dog I used to make sweaters for. It took some practice and testing to get the right fit for her. I wish you happy stitching finding the right fit for your puppy. :D
Ok, so I am currently doing the Medium sized sweater and I just finished making the length on it to the 7" mark. It is EXACTLY 7" but I ended on the right side so when I turn I will be on the "wrong" side. Is this really that big of a deal? I know you expressed in the video that you should try to do it the opposite way i have...but I'm curious as to why? What is the consequence of continuing in this fashion? o.o I'm just honestly curious, I didn't want to end up making the sweater too long or too short...and my last row happens to be on the wrong side :(
@@TheCrochetCrowd ok, thank you very very much for your response! ^_^ what would your recommendation be? should I pull one row out? or add an extra row? or just go with it? I'm still relatively new to crocheting....thank you again!!!! :D
Sorry to read about that. I would consider not making the hole for the leg and skip the instructions of skipping over stitches and just crochet across.
I have a great pyrenees. In the winter she over heats with her coat. Loved to make her one but she is already toasty. I cannot even put my feet under her body if she is on the couch as I causes me to sweat.
Soooo not trying to be rude, but my issue is that you forgot to show, how you got rid of the stragglers. Like its very to say to hide the stragglers, but it’s another thing to show in the video how to hide the stragglers. Especially for new beginners, for doggie sweaters🙂
Soooo not trying to be rude, but everyone, even those with beginning skill, should know that ALL stragglers are weaved in. If he showed that his video would be at least 2 hours long.
Hi what if my dog measures a 14 inch chest..should I do a small or medium pattern, I am not really sure how to do the math on this stuff to adjust. Thanks

The reason they have you chain before turning is not because it’s an older pattern. It’s because when you’re doing a color change every row, you’re finishing the final yarn over of the last stitch with the new color, and chaining helps to secure it.

You must have been in my head. I had just asked my extra small dogs if I needed to crochet them some sweaters. They are Chihuahua Pekinese mix and weigh about three pounds between them. They are 11 weeks old.
How sweet are they! :D Enjoy this.
Thank you so much... It's so nice 💖
I'm glad you like it
The printed pattern has different stitch counts for the second side except for the small size. I’m making the large size & the stitch count for the first side is 12 dc, and for the second side, its only 10 dc. That leaves 2 unused dc. For the XL size, its a difference of 3 dc. Is there a reason to not have the sides matching in width?
It’s probably a typo. Keep both the same.
Chest behind the front legs. Do a bit bigger in case you are a tight crocheter.
@@TheCrochetCrowd okay awesome! Thanks 😊
hi, im a newbie here. Ive searched the comments but no one has had the same issue as me. I have just done the collar ribbing and am trying to move onto the body, but i cant seem to get 42 stiches in the first half (im making the XL). Where exactly am i putting the double crochet stiches? im lost even with the video and written instructions. x
Just put them along the edge anywhere you can fit them
I’m confused about the hook sizes.
I'm having this problem to my F is 3.75mm and I have 2 G size 4.25mm and 4.5mm
@@kimberlybailey7459 A G is usually a 4.0 mm hook. The 4.5 mm is a #7 hook, in between a g and 5.0 H hook. I don’t see many patterns calling for an F or #7. A lot of the crochet hook sets I’ve seen don’t include them.
Do you have a pattern for an xtra small dog?
Do you only change your hook size once
Stupid question - When making this in a solid color, how many balls/skeins would be needed for each size? Thanks!
If you follow the link in the video description the pattern is there with yarn and colour information
Hi, please could you tell me what size I need for German shepherd? Many thanks in advance ☺
You have to measure under the chest just behind the front legs over the dog. Take the circumference of the chest and you will know the size. Every dog is different. So I don't have a concrete answer for each species.
All I want is sweater for medium size dog please show how to obtain downloadable pattern
If you follow the link in the video description, You will be able to get to the pattern.
Is there a way I could make this even smaller 😂 as i have a Chorkie that is classed a tea cup puppy. We have bought a coat that is xxx small.
Holy cow... I don't have a pattern for even smaller than this. However, you doggie sounds adorable.
hi there, just a quick question - hopefully someone can still help. Im trying to make this for a dog, around the chest the dog needs a large size but the neck size is far too big - was wondering if anyone could please advise.
The pattern would have to be redesigned for the dog itself.
I have an American bully, what are the measurements for the large sweater? She has a larger chest like a bull dog, but shorter in length. Btw, she is in the picture
The chest size is on the pattern. You can reduce the length by stopping earlier.
Hi, I have a cocker spaniel. Not sure if I should pick size medium or large ? Can anyone help please ? 😍
@@wendylc7643 thank you 😍😍😍
@@pia-ceciliebay380 you are so welcome. I hope it helps.
What is the consequence of continuing in this fashion? o.o I'm just honestly curious, I didn't want to end up making the sweater too long or too short...and my last row happens to be on the wrong side :(
It will make 1 row look like an indent and not flow. It's up to you though.
@@TheCrochetCrowd ok, thank you very very much for your response! ^_^ what would your recommendation be? should I pull one row out? or add an extra row? or just go with it? I'm still relatively new to crocheting....thank you again!!!! :D
My best friends dog was hit by a car and had to have her right front leg amputated. Could you tell me how to alter this to close up that leg hole?
Sorry to read about that. I would consider not making the hole for the leg and skip the instructions of skipping over stitches and just crochet across.
@@TheCrochetCrowd Thank you! I will definitely give that a try 🙂
My dog measured 33 in. In the chest so I went up a hook size 5mm and 5.5mm will this work?
I'm unsure unless I did the entire project to know for sure. You may need to experiment.
Ok thank you I'll post my end results when I finish.
I need a big dog one! like for..... a 230 pound mastiff lol
I have a great pyrenees. In the winter she over heats with her coat. Loved to make her one but she is already toasty. I cannot even put my feet under her body if she is on the couch as I causes me to sweat.
I hear ya I used to have 2 pyrs, they are much smaller then mastiffs lol, but I saved their hair and wove it and felted myself some slippers!
How to download pattern for medium size dog sweater
The video description has a link. If you click it, you can get to that.
Do you use #4 size yarn?
Yes Suzanne. Michael mentioned in the video that you can use Bernat Super Value and Red Heart Super Saver. He actually used Red Heart with Love.
OMG! Is that a schnauzer?
Maybe hhehe
@@TheCrochetCrowd we have a mini schnauzer grandson called Ovi. I may just make one for him. Thanks for the tutorial 💕
Is that a crochet crowd tape measure I see? 👀 🤔
😆
Yes, a friend did a cover for my tape measure and gave it to me as a gift.
Hi what if my dog measures a 14 inch chest..should I do a small or medium pattern, I am not really sure how to do the math on this stuff to adjust. Thanks
Sounds like medium.
How to get copy of this pattern

@@TheCrochetCrowd it’s a dead link now….T.T
I wish you wouldn’t skip over things
Can you be more specific?
Just fake it! It's a dog! Ha! Ha! Crochet on.
To much math lol
