Most mechanics will say change oil at 5000 miles. See Car Care Nut UA-cam channel. Scotty Kilmer also recommends 5000 mile oil changes. I’m very skeptical of 25,000 mile oil changes! JD Power is initial quality it doesn’t speak to the quality of the vehicle after driving 100,000 miles! EV’s are good for transporting your golf clubs down the fairway!😂

I don't care what "fool's gold" they're selling now, 5K mile oil change intervals will save you a ton of heartache over the course of ownership of your vehicle. It amounts to 2-3 oil changes a year for the avg driver. Especially since everything seems to be reducing displacement and adding forced-induction, adding stress to the overall function of the engine.

    • @Dusdaddy
      @Dusdaddy 3 місяці тому +1

But does it really matter? It might help keeping an engine 500K or more but not many people keep vehicles long enough for it to matter. Lots of people hit 150K-200K with 10K OCI then the rest of the vehicle starts falling apart anyway.

Once I got it was the same once the screen said to change it (9k-10k)I’d change it. Until 186k miles. Most of the miles were highway. Now at 191k for weekends only. I do it every 5k miles.

I’ve been an Amsoil user for nearly 30 years. I believe in their products because I’ve never been disappointed especially in my 2 and 4 cycle small engine equipment.
For my vehicles, I have always stuck with 5,000 mile oil changes not because I don’t trust Amsoil but if there was an oil related engine failure, do you really want the hassle and expense of proving it? No.
To be fair, today most name brand oils are far better today than 20 years ago, regardless of oil viscosity or specification.

I don't recommend never changing oil like the above comment. I don't recommend what I did either, going 12-15k between changes using Mobil 1 20k mile oil and 20k filter. I was doing mostly HWY driving and only some occasional towing. I had that truck for 15 years and it didn't use, burn, or leak oil even at 255k miles. I should have never traded that truck in. Long oil changes worked for me, but I won't say it will work for everyone.

Until they make an oil filter that can remove the diesel-like soot that GDI engines generate, there's no way I'm going anywhere close to 25k miles. That soot is abrasive. Let's see valvoline test that oil in a vehicle that does primarily short trips in extremely cold weather for 25k miles. That's where engine oils need to improve.

Example 1/2 ton you tow 3500-6500 pounds 4 days out of the week change it 3,000 miles if it’s a SUV rarely tows 3000 pounds maybe 4500miles. 3/4 ton trucks same thing I don’t care if you only had 3500 behind it for a total mileage of 900 miles change it at 3,000miles. Auto trans change them around 30,000-40,000 your diffs Same thing 30-40,000miles. Btw check all filter. If it’s newer than 06 check see if the cabin filter has been replaced.

Castrol is making a pretty safe bet with that warranty. Limiting it to 6 years or 125K miles means they will be able to claim that almost any failure is a manufacturing defect. You could probably run vegetable oil in most modern engines and get 6 years or 125K miles before a major problem manifested.

So many are quick to have an opinion on old change intervals. The heavy equipment industry did intensive testing on this and many of the OEMs running in extreme conditions settled on 500 hr oil change intervals. Engines know hours, not miles driven as that doesn't account for accurate run time. Most vehicles have hour meters now, and most would be surprised how little hours engine run time they actually change the oil at.

Not a good idea. Heavy equipment generally run at a much more constant RPM and duty cycle than cars so they just track hours of operation. Oil change intervals are highly subjective. On our Subaru Ascent, over 4k miles there is over 8% fuel dilution verified by Oil Analyzers Inc. Blackstone is crap. They use a calculation of the the base oil and flash point to determine the fuel dilution, where as OAI use Gas Chromatography which breaks it down to a molecular level. If I went 10k, let alone 25k, it’d likely be 20% or higher fuel dilution. I have proof that Blackstone is crap vs OAI with my oil analysis’s.

@dang5553 Tim said it well, it all depends how you use your car. I had Limo business back and do you think we changed the oil every 2 weeks? That was usually the time we were driving 5000 miles.
I personally changed the oil at 10k miles on 2 of my personal vehicles, at 7.5k for my Honda, and now I do the oil changes for my Tundra every 5k.
The interesting thing is when I look at my records, I changed the oil every 4 months. It is just that the 10k oil intervals happened when I lived in Florida. Obviously, we put more miles there. Now I live in a smaller town in WA and we drive 15k Mike's per year.
As I said, my buddy is a Uber driver in Orlando. His Sienna clocked 430k miles when someone hit him and the van was totalled. He used Mobil 1 extended interval oil, I believe the one that was rated for 15k, but because he was putting a lot of miles for a short time, he was changing the oil every 25k. For taxi/Uber drivers, it is different.
I sometimes tow heavy stuff and I see that my oil consumption goes up. I still do not add oil, but if I had to follow Toyota's 10k recommendation, I would have added. I see normally 0.5 quarts drop for every 5k, bur if I tow, it is 1 quart every 5k.

When one compares maintenance service schedule's, most driver's would fall into a severe service schedule. Which is stop and go driving, short trips, less then four miles, in a city, and/or somewhat dusty environment, with variable temperatures. Towing and hauling generally also can put one into a severe service schedule. Normal or regular service which is more highway, less stop and go in a rural environment where the average drive is more then 10 miles. As someone who has run a fleet of vehicle's, and done many oil sample analysis for various comparisons I would say best bet is to change oil every 5,000-7500 miles, using a good quality Full synthetic, and premium oil filter. Changing oil/filter at least twice a year, as oil does break down over time. Oil and filters are cheap in cost, compared to paying to replace an engine.
