Not only is their comedy fantastic, but their musicianship is better than a lot of 'musicians' out there today. This is a fantastic arrangement and the harmonies are great. They could be successful at legitimate musicians.
WOW, what these guys can sing including a song that was so popular and sang the lyrics with so much feelings. Being Hispanic I love them - I miss this show and so glad you were able to place on "UA-cam!" Love it! I loved them when they were on TV back in the 60s and missed them terribly. So happy to see them in videos to watch again. So glad they got credit for all they did for TV back in the 60s despite being fired by CBS.
I have had the pleasure and also the privilege of knowing Dick Smothers, visiting his home and he visiting mine. Was surrealistic to watch a television legend in my living room playing with my then 2 year old daughter. Was such a pleasure to know him to be a very real man, not at all pretentious, sincere and a pleasure to know as a friend. Different to see his off stage persona, to be that of a funny man, unlike his more straight man character. God bless you Dick and Tom. Enjoy retirement.
The gift that keeps on giving. I loved them in their heyday, too. Broken hearted when they were cancelled. They are as enlightened and timeless as the sun itself. Set the kids down in front and make them watch. Make them watch Buster Keaton, W. C. Fields, and the Marx Brothers as well. They'll thank you.😊
Behind all the fun and games, there were two extremely talented and dedicated musicians, humorists, and social justice activists. One of the greatest travesties was the removal of their show by censors at CBS.
Holy hell, I'm glad that I finally found this video. I saw this bit on television ages ago and thought that it was one of the funniest things that I ever saw. I still think that's a brilliant bit of comedy. The most impressive part of the whole thing, for me at least, is that for just short of two minutes, while Tommy Smothers is going off script (so to speak), Dick Smothers is just standing there with this look on his face like, "What the hell are you doing?" Dick barely moves and doesn't make a sound and manages to be hilarious while doing it. Don't get me wrong; Tommy was hysterical in this but DIck's stony-faced stillness was what stuck in my mind. Maybe that's just me.
Tommy writing the comedic bits is a genius..time and time again he knocks it out of the park..what is so great about the comedy...Tommy makes sure to showcase their music and singing incredible talent 1st and then trumps everything with the comedy...
Every time they do a sketch it's like they're doing it for the first time ... never gets old. And they pull it off perfectly over and over. True performers!
When he switched to German in the middle of the song and then totally went off on his own tangent, I was almost crying! Not sure what's funnier: Tom and his antics or Dick standing there calmy watching. If I remember correctly, this was the same song that segued into "Dueling Banjos" with the pianist. I loved the video retrospective too. It really was a great night!
I never saw this one before, I just can't stop laughing! The piano player is priceless! I love these guys! Saw them live with Jack Jones back in '63 or '64! Still love 'em! Thanks for the post
My wife is from Mexico and we went and saw The Smother's Brothers when they were playing in Jacksonville Fla. Dick was in the lobby talking to everyone and was very kind to everyone. I introduced him to my wife who had never heard of The Smothers Bros. in Mexico. He was wonderful enough to dedicate this song to my wife and we will never forget it. I show this to my wife's family whenever we go down to Mexico and it is very popular.
It's amazing (these days) that this type of comedy still exists. It's still as good as I remember the Smothers Brothers to be when I used to watch the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Not a curse word at all and still can make you roll on the ground laughing.
Sharon, we both have great taste! If you haven't already heard it, check out his rendition of The World I Used to Know. There are actually two versions, one from the Mom Always Liked You Best album and the other from The Straight Album.
Just saw them Saturday night with the Charlotte (NC) Symphony and they were incredible! I laughed all night! They performed this and it was even funnier in person. Tommy is now 69 and Dickie is 71 and the years have taken nothing off their talent or humor!
I was on the front row right in front of Tommy. I couldn't have asked for a better seat. It was hysterical how Tommy kept referring to the conducter as George SCHRAAAAM. Great show!
just saw an interview with tommy, he says dickie only sang originally, then someone mentioned to them (when they became a duo) that dickie should be playing a bass. they were already both in college. it isn't easy to learn a fretless instrument but obviously there's some musical talent in the family, the notes are perfect.
In case you think you recognize this tune, it's "Love Me With All Your Heart". Here's the Ray Charles Singers version: ua-cam.com/video/k3nfqH4YDDM/v-deo.html
the piano guy has some of those new "rapist-glases" on. im shure in privat he's driving a "serial killer van" and wearing a "there's-something-wrong-with-this-guy-hat". no serious, awesome shows they made. i deiscovered them this evening (in germany) and they're so hilarious. totally charismatic and professional...also the piano dude ;) we need more of this stuff today for the newer generations.
That song was spectacular..harmony was so wonderful...right up to the part when the comedy took over...you dont realize how great these guys were...not only there musical and vocal genius..but then writing the comedy to fit the skit... so Tommy and dickie..had to learn the music..the Spanish words the blending and then memorizing the comedy parts...back to the music and again back to the comedy...Tommy has the greatest comedic timing in the business...
I can't even begin to extrapolate the fundamental fondantes of the hilarity procured from this transcendental Americannaization in this GOLDEN AGE MOVEMENT. LOVE LOVE LOVE is the cure
@SidneyBroadshead! FYI - Never EVER believe what an entertainer says just "before he comes out on stage"! Believe the comments he makes when he's in his own home and NOT performing.
@Scott: Wow, are you stupid! A minimum of research shows you the brothers have, right now, a combined net worth of over $12 Million. So cogitate on that and extrapolate how much they were worth 'back in the day'. ...Unless of course you're too stupid to be able to do that. Then, just shut the hell up!
Orale...! jamas me hubiera imaginado a los Hermanos Smother cantando en español, felicidades, ojala aqui en Mèxico hubiesen pasado sus T.V. Shows, Saludos desde Huehuetoca Mèxico...!!!
They did this song when I saw them in Peekskill (much to my glee and delight). However, they hadn't done "Boil that Cabbage Down" which spawns the whole "Take it naked bacon" joke from this routine. So Tommy Smothers said something different, and I forgot what it was (I foolishly said "Take it naked bacon" under my breath).
........nice vocal harmony and nice show.....yes, this beautiful song was compose by Nicaraguan poet Rafael Gaston Perez, who made others great songs like "Sinceridad", well known "Bolero Style"
My mom LOVED these two idiots. I've seen bits from multiple decades (even some of their club work that was more political and/or blue-ish), and they always crack me up. Nobody does deceptively understated comedy quite like they do.
Not only is their comedy fantastic, but their musicianship is better than a lot of 'musicians' out there today. This is a fantastic arrangement and the harmonies are great. They could be successful at legitimate musicians.
They're musicians who started doing comedy as their "patter" during performances.
I love the way their voices harmonize

The piano player has a great poker face.

Absolutely one of the funniest things I have ever watched. They were incomparable.
When entertainers were really talented!
Here it is, Christmas day, 2022, and an old man finds a blessing in the form of the ageless talent of the Smothers Brothers. Thank you, thank you!
The gift that keeps on giving. I loved them in their heyday, too. Broken hearted when they were cancelled. They are as enlightened and timeless as the sun itself. ❤
Here it is, just before New Years Eve 2023, and Tommy Smothers passes away… 😢😢😢
Pure talent, pure love of giving that talent for others to enjoy! Always a Fan!

What was the reason they were banned from CBS ??
@@harrodsfan Part of it was that they protested against the Viet Nam war. The network doesn't explain, it rules. K
Watching in 2019. Still a classic. True talent.
Great show, wonderful memories.

I think I did too, but I seem to recall Dick explaining the lyrics, and maybe more German from Tommy. It's been a while...
Tommy writing the comedic bits is a genius..time and time again he knocks it out of the park..what is so great about the comedy...Tommy makes sure to showcase their music and singing incredible talent 1st and then trumps everything with the comedy...

Rarely have I found any comedian to even compare with these guys, much less another duo. Classic.
Nobody harmonizes like family. I have loved these guys since I was about 8 years old. They are timeless.
che bellissima perla. grazie
Just love those two, the best part I had the chance to thank them in person.🕎🇩🇰🇺🇸🕊️🎆🥀
Anyone hoping for a comedy career needs to study the Smothers Brothers. "Mom likes me best."
Let’s face it, these guys were so original, so funny, so talented it’s just so sad that they have no one that can hold candle to them nowadays...
these guys were so far ahead of their time
Would you jump off the Bridge if the piano player told you to?.....not again. .......priceless.
What a way to begin Sunday before Church. I laughed so hard tears came down. They were the greatest🎆♥️🌬️🇺🇸🇩🇰
Its funny to see people in the audience laughing while waiting for the "Setup" They knew it was coming !!
That's what I was thinking! I couldn't believe the song went that long without them doing something funny.
I never saw this one before, I just can't stop laughing! The piano player is priceless! I love these guys! Saw them live with Jack Jones back in '63 or '64! Still love 'em! Thanks for the post
Rest in Peace Tom Smothers.
😢
hahahah i was just a child and i remember this!!!!
Marvelous impish pair!
When I first watched this I said; oh, how are they gonna ruin this one ? I had never laughed harder in my life; I love these guys.

Just hard to beat.
Capturing the audience reactions was genius.
Funny as hell. I've always liked this sketch. Comedy aside, their harmonies are spot on amazing..
Hahaha, true Gringo Spanish. :) They are great!
Right now, I'm drooling! I love Dickie's singing voice so much. A true angel's voice!
Sharon, we both have great taste! If you haven't already heard it, check out his rendition of The World I Used to Know. There are actually two versions, one from the Mom Always Liked You Best album and the other from The Straight Album.
They are so talented and hilarious at the same time. That has to be extremely hard to do. Love the SB.
that was a time when things were more elegant
Just saw them Saturday night with the Charlotte (NC) Symphony and they were incredible! I laughed all night! They performed this and it was even funnier in person. Tommy is now 69 and Dickie is 71 and the years have taken nothing off their talent or humor!
Beautiful music, fellows. So, funny, too. Thank you for sharing your God given talents with the world.
Non sono nostalgica, furono tempi terribili per me 16 anni. Ma la musica di quei tempo era era un incantesimo
I was on the front row right in front of Tommy. I couldn't have asked for a better seat. It was hysterical how Tommy kept referring to the conducter as George SCHRAAAAM. Great show!
Bring them back! Their comedy is always hysterical.
And John Williams still going strong!
Going from the late 1950s. Let them have a rest. Buy their recordings and their wine.
Dickie: These people didn't pay money to listen to us argue. Tommie: Some of them did! Karl
I always come back to this quintessential Smothers Brothers performance for its beauty, wit and humor. Wonderful!
that's back when the talent was genuine and the girls dressed like old ladies.
I could listen to these guys all day long!
What incredible talent ! Used to tickle me all the time when watching them on Malaysian TV and i was only 6 or 7 years old then
such amazing musicians
Little did we know that the piano player, a young man named Dwight Schrute, would later become one of Dunder Mifflin’s finest paper salesman
my mom had all their albums. I grew up listening to their gentle humor. I love seeing it "live" again.
I adore this song! This is a very lovely version.
just saw an interview with tommy, he says dickie only sang originally, then someone mentioned to them (when they became a duo) that dickie should be playing a bass. they were already both in college. it isn't easy to learn a fretless instrument but obviously there's some musical talent in the family, the notes are perfect.
And he's really left-handed. Dickie played that bass right-handed for years to accommodate Tommy.
That was really funny and the song very well done also.
I saw the Smothers Brothers two weeks ago in St. Louis. They were a lot of fun and, yes, they did this routine.
Awesome. I love it. They are fantastic. What a great comedy team.
Not laughing is just not an option here :D
Tommie rules! If you quit, you don't count. Karl
I remember watching this first run. Thank you for sharing.
Laughed until tears were running down my cheeks, great!
Loved these guys since I was 12.
Beautiful rendition of Quando caliente el sol.
In case you think you recognize this tune, it's "Love Me With All Your Heart". Here's the Ray Charles Singers version: ua-cam.com/video/k3nfqH4YDDM/v-deo.html
Tom even broke up Dicky at the very end
These guys were such a big part of my childhood. My dad hardly ever laughed....unless he was listening to these two
Dicky was trying not to laugh ! 😂
the piano guy has some of those new "rapist-glases" on. im shure in privat he's driving a "serial killer van" and wearing a "there's-something-wrong-with-this-guy-hat".
no serious, awesome shows they made. i deiscovered them this evening (in germany) and they're so hilarious. totally charismatic and professional...also the piano dude ;)
we need more of this stuff today for the newer generations.
they are beautiful singers and musicians even without the comedy.. theyd have been famous from music alone
What is Tommy saying in German?
That song was spectacular..harmony was so wonderful...right up to the part when the comedy took over...you dont realize how great these guys were...not only there musical and vocal genius..but then writing the comedy to fit the skit... so Tommy and dickie..had to learn the music..the Spanish words the blending and then memorizing the comedy parts...back to the music and again back to the comedy...Tommy has the greatest comedic timing in the business...

Great post - great video - simply hilarious - They were great on the "Life with Bonnie" show - they did this routine then as well.
I'm 14 and I love it!
So 23 now
These finely trained, poorly paid musicians
Scott Scheirer No, they are the Boston Pops. They were not poorly paid.
@@MariusRiley That's what they said before coming on stage.

Their comedy was great but their voices were better. They were wonderful singers. ❤❤❤❤❤
RIP Tom.
Tommie sings so much better than Dick. He should take the lead. You can't teach that kind of talent! Karl

Oh sí, se botaron en nuestro idioma, les quedó excelente !!!
As a kid I thought that this would be in Italian. If it was, I suspect that it wasn't too hard to translate since both are from Latin.
Actually, they do quite a lovely job on this song... until Tom and the piano player wreck it. Lovely harmonies here!
It’s not “Quando”, which is not a word in Spanish, it’s “Cuando”….
Oooooh....just look at that Guild F-50...*droooool*
So funny!

Simplemente hermosa la interpretación!!
THESE BROTHERS R THE BEST EVER !!!!
It is Cuando, not Quando.
Buen español muchachos, les quedó muy bien. These guys kill me every time, they are 1-derful !!!
Is there a rating higher than "AWSOME"? Because this is FANTASTIC!!!
Wow, they could speak another language, what real talent they have to still be around. Amazeing,.
CLASSIC!!! :-)

Too true. In fact, I think we're going to see them in Stanford, CT. I love "Mediocre Fred" and "Chocolate!" :D
Cuando, not quando...
