tommy also fought against corporate censorship of their show, much like his outspoken contemporaries of that era like lenny bruce, george carlin, and richard pryor.
@@RobKandell YES! They're outstanding & truly gifted! I agree with Kermit - Tommy must be the most unappreciated comedian (a genius!), but you are right - they play their instruments so perfectly WHILE singing in beautiful harmony! I love them & miss them & TV is not worth watching anymore. Thanks for letting me share - just wanted to echo these comments & am glad so many people still enjoy & appreciate them!
I had the honor of driving Tommy to Washington,D.C. around 2015 to a comedy club that night with Lewis Black and a few others I didn’t recognize. I worked for a Limo company then. Tommy is a super nice guy and talks to everyone. He is crazy on stage but also when he isn’t on stage! I don’t think it’s an act! He is just always on! Same with Robin Williams according to a fellow driver. Got my pic with Tommy. Awesome night!
They were ahead of their time and seeing this clip is not only reminiscent but is relevant today. Tommy and Dicky are still entertaining and demonstrate sharp wit. Thx!
You have to admire these guys for pushing the edge on social commentary. When you get the censors afraid of you, you know you are doing something right.
Not sure why but just now catching these vids on the Smothers Brothers. Time passes (i'm 63) and we sometimes forget what was in our earlier years. This show was a classic - nothing surpasses the comedic genius of Tom & Dick Smothers. Look back at all the guests - never to be repeated. The 20 yr reunion was a true testament that only the strong will survive. (and I believe they are still alive and performing )Smart move CBS - I guess it only took 20 years to finally pull your head out of .your AS* (censored so they wont get upset 🤬) Thanks for posting this vid!!
One has to wonder if their firing by CBS didn't do more for their legend than keeping them would have. I'm actually glad the show didn't just fade away with a whimper during the disco era. It made this reunion all the more sweet. And kudos to both the brothers and CBS for not holding a grudge!
their triumphant return, they really let 'em have in that song. "our show was much too hip, so we got censorship... we sort of miss the old conflict of interest, when cbs was like the kgb... back in those days gone past, we never kissed their ass..."
Either Tom is totally ad-libbing here and this is Dick's genuine reaction, or this is so perfectly rehearsed that you can't tell otherwise. Either way, Tom Smothers is still a comedy genius.
Censorship is at its greatest when in spite of the fact that over 300 million Americans smoke marijuanna and the LAWS in most municipalities still will refuse to make it illegal...
@@almilani4300 Sorry, it isn't that high.. At 300 million, everyone but infants and toddlers would be puff-puff passing. Here's a more realistic figure. news.gallup.com/poll/284135/percentage-americans-smoke-marijuana.aspx
WOW! Look at all those stars!!! I grew up with this show. I sure didn't know how important these people were. Political sensorship still lives today on social media, huh?
Oh Tommy! You get me every dam time! Agggghhhhg! CBS should have brought them back....and kept them doing a musical, political comedy show. Think about if the political state of affairs between 1988 and 1996! All the national and world events and 3 presidents !!
i loved these guys. I watched them every single week. I even had a record album. Loved their music, loved their comedy, loved their politics. The irony is that it was CBS that helped bring the war to a close by letting Cronkite go to Viet Nam to see and show America what was really going on there.
Totally remember when this first aired and mom made sure to tape it on our new VCR. He he. And I'll never forget Tom's comment "Right now, I'm wearing a condom."
Anyone have any idea how to watch the whole reunion show? Or original episodes? I grew up with the smothers Brothers years before their comedy show, and we would gather the family to watch the show every week. These guys are among my all-time favorites.
They wrote their own material I think. Their routines always see unrehearsed. They enjoyed what they did. They were not afraid to step into ntroversy which was something very unusual for that time.
You see all those guests they had in those scrolling pictures,? Many of them became major stars and most of them gone now. Yes indeed, those were the dwys.
Before they got censored speaking about the Vietnam War then in the comeback special it was the Execs firing at them from the network, the guys that had fired them before. Lol
They shared their talent genius with the Everly Brothers, the Jonas brothers, the Marx brothers . Living and growing up in the same house produces seamless talent
Why didn’t NBC get the brothers to do two shows per week? One in original style and one in the new style that NBC objected to but the populations of the world loved to watch. Always making fatal mistakes... one or the other show would have received more watching audience than the other. Male Board of Directors...thought so.
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour is one of the most important shows in television history!
Its 2023 and I'm 69. My youngest son was born in 88. Smothers brothers are in their 80s and still performing. Life finds a way
Ian Malcolm
I loved the Smothers true comic genius and great musicians as well. Young people today don't know what they missed...xxxooo
Brilliant comedians and great musicians, to boot!
Mom always liked u best
They sing so great. Both of them have great voices.
One of the best shows ever. From the beginning until now.
Tommy Smothers was a comic genius. My nomination for most unappreciated comedian of all time.

Kermit T. Frog ABSOLUTELY!
💯
Don’t underestimate his musicianship.

I feel good when I watch them😂😂😂

RIP Tommy Smothers! Their show was must see TV back in the day. Not sure how I didn't know about this reunion show - thanks for posting!
I'll always love the Smothers Brothers. Looking at all the previous guests, I'm a little saddened at how many of them are no longer with us.
Those two were always funny and they still are! Unlike the sad stuff on tv now that erroneously calls itself entertainment
What a great reunion I wish it was the whole show

They should be in every Hall of Fame there is for entertainment. These boys are priceless.
You know, people talk about Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello and others as the great duos but these guys were just as good.

well, they did have 20 years to work on it !!!
They have done this a million times, it's like their "Wh'o on first". Still it's funny every time
No ad lib at all. It's one of many different ways they would open a show.
Watched their show every Sunday night! it was great!
It was a great show. I always watched it. Stupid network for canceling their show. We all missed it.
cbs sucks
5:43 - Preach it, Bother Tommy!
Dumbest move CBS ever made was canceling The Smothers Brothers.
Agreed. But gotta give credit: CBS eventually (a long eventually) did bring the Brothers back, knowing full well that it was going to get roasted.
It was called the Vietnam war.
