I figured out just now that the Duke of Dogs is meant to be a gritty version of Robin Hood. It’s not just that he wears a hat like Robin Hood or is an outlaw like him, but when you encounter the villagers in the town that sheltered him and his gang you find out that they provided the villagers with food and goods that’s he and his gang presumably stole from the rich. That’s literally Robin Hood’s MO…he just doesn’t tend to really kill anyone in his classic child-friendly version (or at least not just random nobleman he encounters on the road that refuse to give up their goods to him and his gang).
