It came down to Johns choice that he wanted to stay close to his wife and young family rather than tour endlessly. He was offered lead singer for Queen by Brian May after the death of Freddie (at Freddie's suggestion prior and Brians agreement apparently) but turned it down. As you will read in the comments he was admired by many top vocalists and we Aussies have been lucky to have him but it is exciting to see so many people discover him now thanks to the interwebs!

I guess out of respect to the great Angus, they wouldn't touch his famous moves. The truth of it is that he did dip hos toe in the water in the US . They didn't quite know where he fit into the market over there and he soon discovered that to make it over there would require too much time away from his young family, so he made a conscious decision to stay at home and do the best he could fo over here. And that he did.

America and the UK were in competition with each other back in the day and poor little Australia got squeezed out lol. But don't feel too bad for us because we had your music, the UK music and then our own which we kept to ourselves. It was music heaven.

That’s me in every JF concert I attended…NOT sitting but up bopping to the music…we couldn’t help it…the music made us do it❤. The energy at his concerts was like a great high but without the drugs…. I was so very privileged ❤❤
Apparently Freddie said John had the best voice he had ever heard thats why Queen asked him to be the lead singer after Freddie died.

John has also always been the first person to get musicians together for a charity event after a natural disaster like floods or bushfires. He lives performing and playing off the crowd. He also likes to share the limelight. He just loves playing around. He also clowns around when he appears on tv interviews too.

John was approached and even visited the US to think about moving there and becoming big in the US but he really just loved his life in Australia and he was happy just being known in the one country and bringing up his 2 boys in a quieter setting, I guess you'd say. He was humble and a great father to his kids and husband to his wife of many many years having married early in his 20's. He was really good friends with Olivia Newton John and they managed to sing together on her trips home and even up to the bushfire appeal in more recent years. I think he was know a bit in the UK. Both originally came from there as kids. I just love them together in DARE TO DREAM at the Sydney Olympics 2000 opening ceremony.
I’ve never heard that he was approached to go to the US but I can definitely see why he didn’t go. Unfortunately You’re the Voice didn’t do well in the States but it did chart well in Canada and Europe. Farnsey reported that America didn’t get it, nothing happened there and as such he decided not to tour as he didn’t like the idea of having to campaign.

Apparently John said to his late manager Glenn Wheatley after both them finished up their commitments with the Little River Band in 1986 , he said mate ; please don’t make me famous in America according to Glenn Wheatley.
John was exhausted with how LRB would be on the road for months he simply had enough and zero desire the be in the states for extended periods in time to boost he’s solo career .
Plus American music charts pigeonhole everything the record company RCA couldn’t figure out what genre was You’re The Voice then they say it’s far too political it won’t sell .
They wanted to release Pressure Down as first single from Whispering Jack in USA then RCA scrap that idea as well . You’re The Voice eventually got a American release date after Two Strong Hearts was a minor hit on billboard adult contemporary charts . You’re The Voice only peaked in 80’s on billboard hot 100 chart over 2 years after it’s official Australian release in 1986
It was Bon Scott playing the bagpipes in the original version of this song that gave John the idea of having them in You’re the Voice. John has said this is his favourite rock song. Enjoying your reactions and discovery of our John.

John wrote the song "Burn for you" about how much he hated being away from his wife when on tour. He just wanted to be home, and home was Melbourne.
John faced the same issues that Cold Chisel did when trying to break into the US music market.
The american record label Exec's were so set in their ways in how they perceived their audience expects their music to sound that they tried to boss around the aussie artists to make them sound american. The Aussies dug their heels in and refused to change for anyone.
John wrote his song "Playing To Win", in response and as a bit of a slap in the face and as a warning that he didn't have to be there and that they had better get their act together or he would happily walk away and they would miss out on the deal of a lifetime.
Ian and Jimmy from Cold Chisel wrote their song "You Got Nothing I Want!" as a massive slap in the face for the same Exec's who thought the world revolved around them. They thoroughly pointed out that the Exec's were fools who had no idea what they had failed to latch onto and their diplomacy skilled sucked terribly.
Exactly.... And how they underestimated their audience watching the US reacts now.
I'm (selfishly) glad really, because we were so spoilt to have such great talent all to ourselves...

I've never heard that about playing to win, I thought it was about how he felt about his position in LRB. Gotta say I think there were more issues for cold chisel / Jimmy Barnes than just genre. Ultimately these artists really come from our culture and we get them and they get us in a way the Americans never could. I'm glad they have had such amazing careers here.

John Farnham being a massive AC/DC fan and of Bon Scott , John adores the song and says that’s it’s he’s favourite rock n roll song and that he want to keep the song alive on stage , John is aware AC/DC doesn’t perform it anymore .
Although John was very reluctant to record it , he was talked into it by the recording company they requested Long Way To The Top as a b side for Two Strong Hearts in 1988 and bonus track for CD version of the Age Of Reason album .

Bon Scott the original singer of AC/DC (before his early death) was the original singer and also played the bagpipes not Brian. John does a fantastic job of anything he does.

The record execs in The USA, wanted changes, didn't like John's voice... he came home and you guys lost. He wanted to be home sometimes too. He had bad management before, wanted to choose his own songs. LRB gave him debt, from their recording history, he couldn't even give his kids maccas. Stations wouldn't play his records. Bad time had. Look for the recent movie about Farnsey.

Sadly the mullet has made a resurgence in Australia thanks to the younger footy players and unfortunately my 9 year old son has a mullet thanks to his favourite footy player Sam Draper. I have hated mullets my whole life (I grew up in the 80’s) so I hate that my son has a mullet. I can’t wait until he gets rid of it 😁 the only redeeming thing is his curls that appeared when he grew it.

Watch early Little River Band if you go down that path.....as good as John is he wasn't the best fit for LRB. Glenn Shorrock, their first singer was better for them and they were also better back then.
