After years of round filing I've made a new years resolution to learn how to square file. Buckin is the first place I went and this video did not disappoint! Thanks for the great video!
Thank you Buckin for taking time to show the goods on this type of filing. Got me back out to the shed to straighten up one of my chains this way. Love it brother. Hello and welcome to all the newcomers. And thank you to all the Messengers and soldiers of kindness you rock. 🌲❤🌲✊
Love seeing the old two barrel FORD carb gasket hangin on the nail Buckin!! Changed a lot of them in my day ! Ok, back to the vid. Stay safe up there !
I'm not a master of the square grind hand file, but I've found that something that helps is using a round file to get rid of that little shelf you've got going on in the gullet every few filings.
Hey PEWPEW. I’ve tinkered with your idea. Buckin has recently commented on using round file to carve out gullet, but in my experience the rakers really make the gullet shelf irrelevant. The wood grain isn’t biting on that shelf due to the raker. Does it hurt to clean out the gullet? Hell no. I’ve done it both ways. Your thoughts?
@@ocsplc Side plate still contributes to the cut, and cleaning out that little shelf will lead to better cuts in the long run. At least in my experience and personal preference.
Hi BUCKIN,thank you for Sharing your experience with us! Greetings to all messengers of kindness! I wish you all a great weekend! Hope i meet you all later in the shed, folks!!💚🌲💚🌳
I love how you adapt and overcome. If that was me trying to do what you're doing with that chain I'd be in a panic thinking I messed up that chain. Where as you just figure it out on a fly. Another great video from the one and only buckin
Hey Buckin when your doing the opposite side that your not as good with, why don’t you switch your saw around on the vice so your left arm is on the outside of the bench like it is when you do the first side. Do ya know what I mean?
Exactly what I was going to mention, I do that with round filing, im right handed but I find that my left hand once I rotate the saw is better than right handed. Stay safe people
Crossed my mind, too, but I noticed that his vise will swivel on the base. I'll swivel mine and I find it's much easier to find that comfortable spot to file.
@@BuckinBillyRaySmith hey buckinmy filing has come along way since watching so many of your videos, yes you're a mentor to me vut not only in 1 way, i have always gone on the way of "treating people how you want to be treated" it doesn't always get returned but o don't care. Hey Bucking ... thats a lovely touch you've got there. Its all your fault anyway .. had to order a Simington 451C from madsens1, its on the way. Thanks for your tutorial, it all helps, these little tips. 3 corner Vallorb file works nice, you get a free edge for almost the same price.
I always was more comfortable on the left side by turning the saw around, even with round file. Maybe strange but it works for me. Thanks for all your good content. From a fellow woodman from Montana

Chisel bit hand filing is an art all art takes practice the old timers I used to work with were masters and I would imagine it took them awhile to get it down that good
I ruined 2 chains and got the 3rd pretty good my first time square filing. Converting a round chain to a square chain (full chisel round to square grind). My best experience came when I decided to "get my edge set" by going top down for the first few strokes. Give the file something to bite. If you go from bottom to top or the "traditional" way like Buckin says you run the risk of absolutely ski jumping your chain into oblivion. Taking the top right off of the tooth and then you're screwed. Set your edge from top to bottom and then finish your edge from bottom to top. Once you get the angle set, you're good. Easiest way I've found. Once I figured that out I can convert a chain in 30min.
Where did you get the square file? Does the edge of the file file as well? It seems to be like a triangle file would be ideal for this. (I've done nothing but round filing until now.)
I remember bench number 1!!! With the BR initials and a kids sheet for some overhead mood lighting filtration..., and the second bench, and the saw cave... great days but I sure don’t miss ya freezing your cuhuaches off at night!!!
Howdy Buckin, I just started to square file by hand myself. I am with you I prefer coming from the bottom rather than over the top. Still have lots of room for improvement however the chain cuts faster with the square grind over the round. I will say though I have noticed that with the square grind the saw as more of a tendency to try to kickback. Nothing uncontrollable however something to be aware of.... Have A Day! ;~)
Wandering why the square grind doesn't need a gullet? You mentioned that the side beak can be straight up and down. Keep up the great posts. I have learned so much from your channel.
If the side plate goes straight up, its for hardwood, the less the angle of the side plate, the more it is for softwood and u have to get the gullet. If u get the gullet right, the chips will float faster through the tooth. Join our square ground filing fb group for more details about the angles and the gullet. facebook.com/groups/619621578626959/ Be kind,Love wins.

Try flipping the saw..( power head on the right side of the vise )..standing on the left side of the vise ...keep your right hand on the handle left hand on the tip of the file..thats the only way I found to square file the right side cutters
I watched this when you posted and right now the light bulb goes off. I started doing this and i get side beek. It cuts well but ding ding ding its chips the chrome plate. So you end up with less chain life. I file up like you but i kinds lay on the top of the saw i find it easier to go both ways from center. I start and file both sides as i go then go back and do rakes. Thank you
Hello, I don’t know English, but I’m looking at your skill, I was very surprised when I saw such a file in our Ukraine, probably they will not recognize it for a long time, I saw it by chance and really liked it, you couldn’t send me such files to Ukraine at least 2-3 pieces. I will pay for everything I will be grateful))
Kinda like your leaning stick for soccer game, I remember a weird bench for bicep curls from the gym that your chest is leaning on and your knees are supported, if you had a way to get comfortable like that while your filing!
you can kind of pinch the tooth with your left hand and use your pointer finger as a guide on the back side of the tooth. Do one side then flip the saw around.
Hey mate With ste square grid does it work better or not if you come back and take i don't know the word ledge or gullet going to try it but just asking
Billy Ray, guessing you are right handed so filing with your left hand as the lead hand is why you struggle the other way. just like a base ball pitcher throwing with his other arm. When I used to file chains I would turn the whole saw around in the vice....
Slow and steady is how I am doing round filing still, but I get it done, so can't complain about it. I have a long ways to go before I try my hand at square filing.....maybe on one of my old chains.....hmmmm......hold on, I'l bee back! ha ha ha!! Have a great day everyone!

@Buckin'BillyRaySmith what do you do with the gullit
Those square grounds look Deadly!
Would have been the Second day of Buckin’Stock! 😢
You should be asleep and resting Sir!
you can kind of pinch the tooth with your left hand and use your pointer finger as a guide on the back side of the tooth. Do one side then flip the saw around.
Hey buckin where do you get the files for square cut , cant find them in new brunswick
Hey mate With ste square grid does it work better or not if you come back and take i don't know the word ledge or gullet going to try it but just asking
Is there a file flats for sale on amazon / ebay
Turn the saw around in the vice to file the other side
Thanks for the shout out to all the Australian blokes like me mate so where can I get a file for square grid hand file here in Australia mate
Billy Ray, guessing you are right handed so filing with your left hand as the lead hand is why
you struggle the other way. just like a base ball pitcher throwing with his other arm.
Hey there Buckin. What files do you use and where do you get them? 3/8 .063 chain
