ON A BUDGET? Grading with PSA to Grow a Collection - 60+ Card Return

  • Today I wanted to share a "bread and butter" type of order that I send out weekly to PSA. As I mention in the video, the VAST majority (90%+) of the cards shown were purchased in the $2-10 range on eBay/COMC or at card shows. Yes, the flashy PSA reveals are fun and make for great content, but I think there are much stronger concepts to learn from an order like the one I share today.
    Learn from my experience before attempting it yourself :)!

    Great video - I like your thinking behind the whole process. Could you talk a little bit about the cards you buy that you plan to grade but after getting them you realize they are off condition? How often does that happen? How do you minimize that? Thanks!

    • @carlsoncards
      @carlsoncards  Рік тому +6

      Hey Christopher! Really great question and in hindsight I wish I had mentioned this in the video. The biggest thing is that I have to have the mindset that I am okay that only ~70% of the cards I buy will be gradeable. This number will obviously vary based on the type of cards you buy or the threshold you have for grading (I grade anything I am confident are 9 or higher, so usually can get away with a couple minor issues). I’m not sure of a great way to minimize this happening outside of only buying in person, but I think having this mindset makes it so you don’t get as disappointed.
      I will say for any medium to higher dollar cards, if there is MAJOR wear (huge crease in the card, ridiculous amount of deep scratches) that was not listed anywhere on the eBay listing, I have returned cards in the past.
      When I do find the other 30% that I feel are more in the NM-MT range, I either sell them on eBay or comc with that distinction, or sell locally at card shows. The key point here though is I have to be okay to lose a few dollars here and there during this process, and this is one of those spots.

      @Carlson Cards thanks for the quick reply! I think that's right. Just because a card won't "gem", doesnt mean it it isn't NM or better. And it's likely still a desired card because that's what you were buying in the first place.

    • @carlsoncards

      @@christopherthomas9355 100%! And that threshold of “what condition you are comfortable with grading” will vary based on the card of course. Obviously cards shown in this video I am much stricter on than a card for my collection that is out of 50 for instance (or a higher dollar card in general).

    With this type of stuff, you really have to watch what you're doing as well. With low pop counts and less frequent sales, your low sale can really effect a market. Many buyers and sellers rely on comps of solds either on eBay or apps like market movers to determine a buy/ sell price and if your low sale is all that week/ month had, it can really affect the market going forward. So with that said, don't severely undersell on value for this type of stuff. Use the resources at your disposal being like 10% under is 1 thing. But going say 25% or more under is another. This can be a great strategy for long term success though. Classic examples of this type were inserts from the mid 90s like 93/ 94 fleer rebound kings. Many weren't concerned with this type of card and now with total pop counts on just about all of that insert set, 10s can go for over 1000 just because the lack of 10s. I may even suggest putting a few 10s of some of the better inserts away for a few years when you can as that can have that similar effect.

    Great video as always 🍻 had a question I meant to ask before. If I plan on grading multiple cards from the same set (example: a prizm rainbow) do you think it’s better to send them all in the same order or spread them out over different orders with other cards?

    • @carlsoncards

      Hey man! Great question and also thanks for the kind words! I don’t mind sending them in the same but I would highly encourage sorting the cards by worst to best condition when you send. Seems to help (maybe it doesn’t do anything at all), but it’s seemed to help me in the past.

    Do not and I repeat do not "grade" it yourself unless you have extensive experience sending to PSA/BGS/etc. I'm fairly new to the hobby and used a loupe, cleaned the cards, etc. and sent in what looked near perfect to me to only receive PSA 7-8s.
    Find a vendor who specializes in reviewing/pre-screening cards so they can tell you what should be sent to potential get at least grade 9 so you aren't throwing money down the drain.
