    I'm Team Wallpaper, but with restraint. I love it as a surprise in a powder room. I once visited a beautiful, ultra modern, minimalist home which had..... wild tropical plants and birds wallpaper in the powder room! Such a joyful contrast. I actually burst out laughing! Loved it!

    In Russia painting all the walls is a new thing. In every apartment all the walls have wallpaper and it's a standard thing. We never hire a pro for applying wallpaper, but we hire a pro for painting.

    I went to school for interior design, and quit after one semester. I have learned more about real scenarios that I face in my own home now than from school. I am blown away by your knowledge and ability to teach. These videos are so well done, so concise but packed full….I am blown away. I lack confidence, and you have given me much needed direction to express myself in my home. I can’t thank you enough. Every time I watch one of your videos I am so grateful you answered a question that stopped me from moving forward. I want my home to be a beautiful expression of my creativity. I want to feel the beauty. How can I possibly thank you for inspiring me?! It’s an enormous deal, especially when you doubt yourself.
    Also… I know, but it’s from the heart… thank you for covering different styles. I see so many designers just throw up Homegoods…. And it’s alllll the same. I loved your bathroom stenciling with that deep orange!!! My heart was like yeeeeeaaasss!!! Give me that color! You keep it up. You’re are making the world a more beautiful place, and I truly sincerely thank you. ❤️

    Hi Julie 😊. I look forward to your videos. Such good info and bright energy. I was spoiled with an interior designer/artist for a dad as I was growing up, especially during the early ‘70’s, the heyday of Barbara D’Arcy of Bloomingdales. She was the one who loved “Purple and Orange. Together.” Still cracks me up.
    After taking down Schumacher/Waverly/Bloomcraft fabrics from the display room walls where Dad worked, he’d cart it home, and run it through the washer, make things. I had some wild jackets and bellbottoms!
    I’m in a rental, unable to paint or wallpaper, but I’m using starch to apply cloth to accent areas with mirror panels on them. Hot water will dissolve it when I leave.
    I’m a lifelong lover of textiles, loomed/knitted/embroidered, and I’m loving the new aged-looking rugs. One day, I’ll design an area with a rug applied to a wall, some open shelving, architectural elements...for visual warmth and acoustic tuning of the space.
    So much inspiration in videos, I’ve finally created my ideal site design/house plan. Over the years, it’s been distilled to include only what floats my boat, that essential living laboratory of the art/science/business and Spirit of HOME. Thanks for your input to my completed envisioning. ✨💕🌱🎶

      Great, I’ll look for that video. I had a house for thirty years and find apartment living restful in some ways and stressful in others. I’ve had no luck yet finding images of designer cloth from the 60’s and ‘70’s, when I made all my own clothes and worked like crazy with my dad on home projects. I lost my slides of the large old home. My bedroom had 10’ ceilings covered in Jacobean Poppies fabric to match the Nettlecreek bedspreads, drapes, headboards we upholstered. White enamel ceiling&woodwork and a mirrored wall (Yikes! Good thing I read late and got up at five). Other fabrics I particularly loved were Emperor’s Garden (I can still see that amazing red and Chinese-graphic clouds) I made a jacket from, and one that designer Paul Kettering used in some mansion to recall a raja’s tent. My share of that became a back-zip bellbottom bodysuit with Nehru collar and diamond cutout just below. I’d love to find a coffee table book with images from those days. Gave away all my Architectural Digest and House and Garden/House Beautiful issues from previous decades, along with my much-loved Barbara D’Arcy book. Not ‘minimalist’ since downsizing, but Essentialist. Heaven will include creative play with amazing people and materials/processes. Dad came long ago in a dream (passed in ‘79) to give me a lesson in using “lamp blue”, his new favorite thing (He had enthusiastic phases in life, like painting things Chinese Red and turning everything over to get shepherd casters.) I awoke, shaking my head and laughing, as it hadn’t occurred to him that we only have lamp black here on 🌎. 😏. He must be having a ball on the other side.

    Every time I think of wallpapering, say, the powder room, or one of the bedrooms, it leads me to think that for consistency, I will have to wallpaper the other bedrooms as well. And then what do I do about the hallway and stairwell between those bedrooms? And then the kitchen? It just doesn't end. When I watch vlogs of home tours, it's what I see, either colorful paint everywhere or wallpaper everywhere.

    This video couldn't have been posted at a better time for me, I'm redoing our master bath, following the simple rule on the stationary big ticket items, plan is white fixtures, white tile, neutral floor with close matching vanity counters and shower floor, but with an awesome mural above the drop in tub, I've already ordered a sample of a heavily leaf jungle, but having looked at it for weeks, I've decided I don't love it, at this time I have a new tub in the garage, two vanities in the closet and a washlet on it's way, and months before my contractor starts, it's time to stop focusing the wow factor till the heavy stuff is placed. Love your channel and thank you for giving me clarity on my project.

      I live in a very small home with 2 small bathrooms. Even the “main” one I use is same as for guests. I want that “wow” factor in there when guests come in as well as when I’m laying in tub or getting ready to go out. So why do designers advise against making it exciting or visually impactful?

    Love the video. There is a wall in my master bath that highlights all the flaws on this less wide wall. The thing is when you view the area, one is able to peak into the master shower focal wall with very pretty Annie Selke pattern tile. I understood these two walls should not compete with one another. We have an early-mid 19th century family home that has wallpaper in nearly every room, including the closets - over lath and plaster walls. It was always my understanding that wallpaper "covered a multitude of sins", such as defects in the plaster or walls. We're planning a major renovation of the home, and most of the wallpaper is old and peeling, needing upgrades. I'm having a lot of fun gathering wallpaper samples, some of which are period styles, such as William Morris. My concern is having a smooth transition from room to room without it looking like a strange museum or having a "blue room" or a "Chinoiserie" room, etc.

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  2 роки тому +1

      I love William Morris’ strawberry thief pattern- so moody yet chic in blue! 😍 I’m a huge advocate of each room having their own distinct style, so I say do what you love. You will make the home feel more cohesive by injecting your personal style within. I’m not a fan of matchy-matchy by any means. I like each room to evoke a different feeling

    • @SaltieCat
      @SaltieCat 2 роки тому

      @@JulieKhuu Strawberry Thief is a favorite, and I love that the wallpapers come in different colors and shades of the patterns. Some of the metallics are sooo gorgeous! Just received a sample of Willow Bough in Ivory/Pearl that is stunning. Taking your advice to heart, and am now thinking that instead of wallpaper in the bathrooms (I was thinking of a wide-striped Laura Ashley for the new upstairs bath), I could replicate that fairly easily with paint, which would have more staying power. Thanks for the reply and tips! Feeling more confident about the renovation now, and I've started a blog to memorialize our reno journey.

    Hi Julie, I looked at so many websites trying to find someone to help me with, "how to choose wall paper for my small bathroom". Then I remembered your channel. What a relief!! You explained everything in such detail that I now feel I'm equipped to get started. Until I took another look at my walls. On the surface they don't appear to be textured. But I can feel and see little bumps. Not big bulging bumps though. Do you think I can still give it a go? I really, really hope so. This bathroom really needs some
    help. Thanks

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  Рік тому

      Yes for sure Patricia! Look for papers with some pattern or texture to it to mask the bumps. The more solid the paper, the more you’ll see the existing texture of your walls. You got this 🙌🏻

  • @kirintenshi
    @kirintenshi 3 роки тому

    I love wallpaper, but not just for the look - a room with wallpaper is more soundproof than a room with painted walls. This is important to me since I'm hypersensitive to noise. That's why I would choose wallpaper over paint even if I could create the same look with paint. But installing wallpaper seems like a daunting task, and I really can't afford to hire a professional. Luckily, there is this wide washi tape wall paper, which is not really wallpaper, but wide washi tape you can just stick on the wall. But it's not vinyl, it's made of paper, which is important to me. I don't like the idea of covering my walls with plastic. So, extra wide washi tape (MT Casa or Sincol) is my best bet for easy wall covering. It's not available in many shops, though, I only know one where to buy MT Casa and Sincol wall tape.

    Hey Julie - Another great video. I’m considering wallpaper over my fireplace in the living room (in addition to adding a mantle or at least a shelf) and styling it to be the focal point in the room. The fireplace has glass tiles with a natural stone look, the decor is traditional contemporary with white leather furniture, mustard yellow curtains and antique table top bronzes. Not sure what to do. I could send a photo if you like?

    I had wallpaper I loved in my dream house - that I ended up having to sell due to a divorce. I took a hit because my tastes were not in line with prospective buyers. I am now selling my current home that has a room with wallpaper - when I asked how much to remove it (to, hopefully, make it more appealing to buyers) I was told it was a very expensive prospect by my contractor. I doubt they still make the pattern that I loved so much but I am very hesitant to use wallpaper in the future (as much as I love it). Not sure if it would work for me but thank you for the information.

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  3 роки тому +3

      Thank you for watching and providing great insight Kathwren! It typically costs half the price to remove as it does to install, but I would never remove it simply to sell. Let the new homeowners do so, since they will most likely be remodeling to suit their needs and aesthetic. I’m sure you will find something you love this time around. There’s so much out there to discover 😍👍🏻
