I've been Rewatching this series from episode one series one over the last six months and it's even funnier than when I first watched it as a kid… Unquestionably one of the funniest sitcoms ever produced by the UK and strangely enough, a massive hit in Germany still today.😊
One of THE best comedy programmes from the UK imo. So many sayings that have become common in conversation and 'piss-taking'. I loved Secret Army too, but this was an excellent parody. I know you'll love watching it through Connor, it will give you many laughs!
I watched repeats of all these, and some episodes were just amazingly written. There would be several separate storylines - all funny - that would all tie together in the climax. That's very difficult to do
Part of the joke is each nationality don't necessarily speak the others language. For instance only Michele the resistance girl can speak to the British airmen.
The actor Gorden Kaye who played 'Renee' was gay in real life. He was much loved in the UK and suffered severe head injuries when a car he was in crashed in a fierce storm in Jan. 1990. He suffered dementia and died in Jan. 2017. Richard Gibson, born Kampala Uganda, who played 'Herr Flick' in all but the final series, divides his time now between the UK and Ireland working in Films (The |Go Between 1971), TV (Allo Allo 1982-92), and newspaper sub-editing.
@@znotch87 The plot is fairly well introduced in the first 5 mins. (isnt there normally a Rene talking to camera for a start in these or was that missing on S1E1 ?) Cafe Owner has wife (whose cooking is terrible, beaten only by her singing) , Has waitresses on the side , and is is a reluctant collaborator with the resistance and the germans. Holds the original painting (hidden) that has value , as does the clock (does that diappear from the plots much later on). And there is a war on (WW2)
Hiya Connor, they showed this series in France and Germany, French thought it was the biggest insult ever, the Germans thought it was the funniest thing they've seen in their lives, you cant make it up, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumberland, England
Conner this is old style British humour with lots of innuendo and some Sexual references in the style of Stage comedy I think with a simple plot made hilarious. The Carry on films were also good with a different subject for each film.
Sorry Conner by stretching the screen we can only see half the screen 🥺😞but it’s great to see it again the Phrase we used to watch out for is Michelle saying “ LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY I WILL SAY THIS ONLY ONCE “ on each episode 🤣I saw them live on stage years ago for a season. They used to go down to the markets and eat there and mixed with the fans they were so friendly thank you for showing it even if we could hardly see it the narrative just enough 👏🤷♀️
It used to be common for pilot episodes to not be listed as episode 1, as they were tests to see if they were popular, its worth noting this for older series
Don't apologise, this is the First episode of Season 1. As someone commented, the Pilot episode is just to see if the audience will be into the premise of the sitcom.
Connor, you haven't yet met the ultimate in French-English-French-speaking characters yet. local polissmann, Offeeser Crabtree, who ees anuthErr Eng-lish-man in dis-geeze... I don't think he appears until a later series - hanging out of a tree in his long johns as he hass list hiz troo-zers - and had to be kit doon as hee can onlee spik veree bid Fronch... A treat awaits you as his facial exprishons are absolutely hilarious, as well as the phrases he comes out with...!
This came out a year after the first Indiana Jones film. There was a very good BBC drama series called Secret Army about the french resistance this is a sort of comedic homage to it.
Love this show as a kid back when I was old enough to be be allowed to watch "The Benny Hill Show" which I loved even more! XD But I ain't one to gossip... .
@@JK50with10 it was revealed that the character was based on a combination of Joseph Goebbels and Arnold Toht from Raiders of the Lost Ark, and that Gibson had wished to incorporate all manner of grotesqueries from these characters into his depiction of Flick but had only been allowed a limp.
There is an episode before this one (the pilot I guess, since this has the title Episode 1 in it) that is a better introduction to everyone and explains the plot better. And it shows how and why the painting and the clock was entrusted to Rene, how and why the airmen and Michele turned up in Rene's life and the dynamic between Rene, his wife and his waitresses. But even if you skip that episode, you'll pretty quickly pick it up anyway.
HEyyyyy, this isn't the first episode, there is a pilot episode before this one, did I miss you've already seen that one? It will explain so much that leads up to this episode... it's called "The British Are Coming"
No, the real gestapo was first. They for real wore those type of clothes. There costumes were designed to look intimidating. Hugo Boss did a lot of those designs..
Amazingly, the show was so popular that it was sold to both French and German TV - the first WWII comedy ever shown on German television (I think). That was because it took the piss out of everyone equally. The Germans were idiots, the French were idiots, the British were idiots, the Italians were idiots...
This comedy took a bit of flack upon release as it appeared to be a massive Mickey take on a more serious drama called ‘Secret Army’. Total diligent shows but strangely similar. ‘Allo ‘Allo was utterly ridiculous comedy, a farce and vey silly but good fun.
Stretching the image is acceptable, positioning the image so your audience only see the top half is not one of your better ideas. There is a lot of visual comedy in the episodes, some of which happens in the bottom part of the screen image, which will not be visible to us. Stretch it, reduce it’s size and show the whole image, otherwise it’s pointless to those who have never seen Allo Allo before.
Great video 👍 I think you are becoming a Anglophile and you are enjoying the stereotype English person trying to speak french, the Gestapo uniform was long leather coats etc 😊
So you know the nationality the French speak French with a bad English accent, the Germans speak with a bad English accent, Policeman Crabtree, a British Agent, speaks abysmal French and the English speak impeccable Kings English. They can all, sort of speak to each other, but none are fluent in each others language...HILARITY FOLLOWS...
As a French guy I gladly give you the "French accent in English" pass (apart from the "hon hon hon" and "oui oui baguette croissant" part that got old), loved it when you were starting to do it. French people enjoy their accent to be mimicked by native Anglophones because we love to make fun of ourselves when French people are speaking English with this accent. BTW, this TV show might be quite confusing for French people because their French accent is mixed with some very British intonations here and there. Fun fact : there's an old French song named "Sous les ponts de Paris", but it isn't the one featured in this show : ua-cam.com/video/7SfkrvNVqMc/v-deo.html
@@McJibbin Please do Connor. 'Allo 'Allo is rare in that although its a comedy, the story evolves over each episode. If you watch them out of sequence it gets confusing. This is a seriously hilarious show though once it gets going. Its just a complete piss take of WW2, whilst remaining fairly historically accurate
I grew up watching Allo Allo. It starts off great but sadly (in my opinion) goes downhill. I think the pilot episode is actually the best one. This reaction is not actually the pilot episode. This must be the first time in history that someone said they were worried that they didn't know the 'plot' for 'Allo Allo'! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yes, Herr Flick is based on Todt from Indiana Jones.
It is just a common stereotype of a Gestapo Officer found in many films and comedy sketches.
This came out a year after the first Indiana Jones film.
There was a very good BBC drama series called Secret Army about the french resistance this is a sort of comedic homage to it.
Yes, "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" came first. It premiered in Aug 1981, " 'Allo, 'allo" premiered in Dec 1982.
Allo Allo was popular in Europe as well.
Love this show as a kid back when I was old enough to be be allowed to watch "The Benny Hill Show" which I loved even more! XD
But I ain't one to gossip... .
Allo Allo came out 2 years prior to Indiana Jones Raiders of the lost Arc
Is there a source for that? I always figured both were a visual reference to Heinrich Himmler.
Lost Arc was 1981. Allo Allo was 1982.

I'm a 24 year old girl so NOT the audience for this but I have fond memories of watching this with my dad
Herr Flick is the GeStaPo-stereotype; GeStaPo-men were known for wearing a long black leather rain coat and hat.
