For anyone interested in family history please don't forget to talk to parents and grandparents, ask how and where met, lived, things they enjoyed like hobbies. Do they remember their parents, grandparents, siblings, wars, historical events etc Names and dates mean nothing without their stories ❤

Fascinating to hear the Jane Austen connection. My family have been able to trace our ancestry to Spain and Portugal since noticing a familial connection on Mark Wright's episode of WDYTYA and sharing ancestors a few generations back. Now he is known affectionately in our family as Cousin Mark 😂

I can talk about Family History for hours and hours too Joe. I've been researching mine since 2009! I've got back to the early 1600s. My family also go back to France and Guernsey...Bellet, they were Huguenot. Protestants that escaped from Catholic France. It's fascinating.

The Jane Austen connection is super cool! I’ve read Pride and Prejudice and can see how they would assume she drew inspiration from the situation for Mrs. Bennet. Even if not, it’s just cool that she was even aware of who your family members were back then.

I knew there was a link to Jane when the Jane Austen Centre was thanked in the credits, but nice to have it finally confirmed three years after your episode aired 😂 Cassandra was Jane's sister. The best version of Mrs Bennett is in the 1995 BBC adaptation with Colin Firth, it's on the iPlayer.

Yes- Alison Steadman played Mrs Bennett and did a brilliant job. The 1995 P&P is hands down the best. What’s more is that parts were filmed in Lacock (the village of Meryton in the novel) where Joe was born.

What a privilege to have all the research into your family history and to find the connections to Jane Austen, it goes into far more depth than we would get just looking at the births and deaths. What a hoot if your relative is the inspiration for Mrs Bennett, I love Pride and Prejudice if you have time watch the BBC 1995 series it is wonderful. Alison Steadman plays your relative! It is a perfect series to binge watch on a rainy Sunday cosy in front of the wood burner. Great video, thanks for sharing!❤️

I was thinking how that sounded exactly like the character from Pride and Prejudice, and the admiral story was also a common theme in her books. Persuasion had a story of an admiral marrying an older woman whom he had fallen in love with when they were younger but couldn't marry because her family wouldn't allow it. So, she was considered dowdy and "on the shelf" by the time of their reunion.

Yes! The main character who eventually marries the admiral also had a sister whom she disliked that would always act like she was really ill and dying but wasn't. Was the first character I thought of rather than Mrs Bennet. Not as well known a story Persuasion but it's one of my personal favourites.

Joe that is really fascinating. All I would say is, try to get time to read the book Pride And Prejudice rather than watching the film. You’ll be so interested in the Mrs Bennett character. Also, another of Jane Austen’s books called Persuasion, features a senior naval officer who marries an older woman who was considered ‘past her best’ which is another link to the story of your family. It might be interesting to compare the dates of your letters to Austen’s writing. Pride And Prejudice in its original form was from around 1796/1797 and Persuasion was slightly later in around 1815/1816.

Joe, that’s fascinating about your link with Jane Austen, I absolutely love her. Cassandra was her sister (Named after their mother Cassandra) She also had 6 brothers, 2 of which served in the navy. Her brother Francis became Sir Francis and Admiral of the Fleet. Her brother Charles became a Rear Admiral, so lots of connections and inspiration for her novels. The lady you mentioned with ill health could well have been the inspiration for her character Mrs. Bennet, mother of the 5 Bennet girls who she tirelessly tries to marry off in Pride & Prejudice. She suffers with her nerves whenever things don’t go her way! How amazing that you have a link with my absolute literacy heroine Jane Austen, there are a few books with letters from Jane to her sister Cassandra that might be of interest. My relatives have traced my family tree on both sides of my family and I’m related to Oliver Cromwell and I’ve no idea how they got this far but all the way back to Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni tribe. My family are from the area she’s from.

I paused the video to watch the episode. Fascinating.
I was fortunate to have my daughter accepted into a top primary school. A friend, a well known personality, decided to apply for her girl. She asked me for a letter of recommendation, and a list of required papers. When I mentioned proof of vaccinations, she told me her child had none (mom didn't believe in them). That annoyed me. She relied on caring parents like myself to protect her child. Listening to how many of your ancestor's children died of TB, how could anybody be so selfish? Her child was refused a place at the school and our friendship broke.

I have a story about my grandfather. It’s a long story, but I’ll try and make it short. My mother only met her father once, when she was 4 or 5. She had a vague recollection of him coming to visit, but my grandma sent him packing. That’s all we had to go on. When my grandma and grandfather met, he was in the army, but we subsequently discovered that when WW2 came to town (he lived in London), he deserted and ran off to Devon where he met my grandmother. They married, had a child (my mother) and moved about a lot. They went back to London where he was found, caught and arrested by the army. He then fessed up that he was already married and had committed bigamy. The law has first dibs (the army deal with their own). He went to court (before the army dealt with him) and was let out on bail pending sentencing. While that was happening, my grandma got pregnant again with my uncle. My grandfather went back to court and was sentenced to a year in Exeter prison. When he came out, he went to visit my grandma one last time and to see the son he had never met. Gran wasn’t impressed.
We only found out all of this recently because nobody ever spoke about it, and when he married my grandmother, he lied on the wedding certificate so he was very hard to trace (we tried to find him for years). It was only when we started searching the local newspapers that we found the court case and all the details were there in black and white, described in detail, and it left no doubt that he was my grandfather. His fake and real name was mentioned, my grandma was mentioned, the bigamy case and his previous wife was mentioned. A whole bunch of information.
Once we had that information, a whole new family started popping up on Ancestry. When he came out of prison, and after my grandma sent him packing, he went to Ireland (they were neutral during WW2), he met somebody else, had another child and then deserted them too (I have Irish relatives). So, I found more first and second cousins I never knew I had. I’ve looked into his life, his history, where he grew up and how his mother dragged him, and his siblings through the workhouses in London, where he worked, his troubled past with the law as a teenager etc. It’s so fascinating and quite unbelievable. Anyway, his life is a long, fascinating story of which things keep popping up all the time, not to mention the very rich / posh family his mother came from (a bit like the Austen’s). Anyway, looking back is totally fascinating and if you have someone you want to find… there are ways to do it these days. Yours is a fascinating story, Joe… thanks for sharing 😊

Dear Joe, thank you so much for including your family history! How fascinating to hear about Jane Austen and your ancestors!! I do think you should watch Pride and Prejudice as it is so good; very funny and very clever. Jane Austen's wit, humour, empathy and positivity has long since engrossed me. I love her books and the films/dramas made from the books. I've always been intrigued by Jane's own character, so to hear your story about how she wrote to Cassandra about your family is amazing! I can quite see that the Mrs Bennett character could well be based on Jane's observation on your own Lady W. I'd love to hear what you think (after you've watched P&P for yourself)? Thank you, once again for sharing. Take care Joe. Xx

Mrs Bennett is a really famous character from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. It seems Jane was jealous of your family! She says in her letter that your relation was good looking and well mannered, so the creation of Mrs Bennett must have been from bitterness. The link is really amazing! So many films reference the ideals of Jane Austen (e.g Bridget Jones) I have been to the Jane Austen museum in Bath. There are festivals where people dress up in period costumes etc. You have to do a video or documentary follow-up! The fan base is world-wide and huge!! I can't believe you are not more excited. The UK was obsessed with Pride and Prejudice in the late 90's and 00's. There is even a new Bridget Jones film coming out soon with Hugh Grant. I think your Mum will understand more. Best of luck!

I live in Exeter NH, US. My family history on my mother’s side is traced back to 1200s England. I am a direct descendant of Edward (the Colonist) Gilman. His sister Bridget married Edward Lincoln, who had Samuel Lincoln. President Lincoln is my 7th cousin 4 generations apart. I am a direct descendent of William Brewster, who led the Mayflower expedition. I am related to John Hancock, who signed the Declaration of Independence. On my father’s side my family came from Cork Ireland during the potato famine. I found my half siblings through Ancestry DNA. Extra fine semolina works really well, also having everything ready for topping so it's not sat on the peel for too long 😊

We found on my husbands side of family that an ancestor was on expedition with Shackleton we found a photo and also a painting of his wife was in the national portrait gallery still need to find out more. You are extremely lucky to have all that information to pass down. 🌳

That was interesting Joe. I was born in Salisbury but my family were originally from Wales, travelling to Wiltshire during the depression. I used to often walk past St Thomas Church which is just off the Market Place. Your ancestor must have been in charge of that parish many years ago. My mother always said she was a distant relative of Ivor Novello, would love to do an Ancestry to see if this was true! She was named Edith Novello Rees supposedly because of this. Who knows. As your Mum knows my hubby is five years younger than me, just like the lady referred to by Jane Austin. Such is life 👏❤️🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸

What is absolutely insane in the beauty of our existence, is the amount of people it took for us to be here! Simply 10 generations back, it took 2,108 people for us to be here! Imagine how many of us are actually related? My Grandpa always said we were related to Charlemagne, but I think most Europeans are! HA! Cheers!

I always say that the Butcher in Fiddler on the Roof was based off my Great Great Grandfather, also named Lazer Wolfe who was a butcher in Poland in a neighboring town where the author of Fiddler on the Roof lived.
Probably not, but it's fun to say since nobody can disprove it.

Loved hearing the ancestry stories and being a fan of the Pride and Prejudice film, Mrs Bennet is defo a character 😆. A few years ago I researched a whole bunch of family history, but getting the UK side of it all has been super hard so I've stopped. All I know is that my 3x Great Grandad was born in Oxfordshire, then moved to London and then left London to move to NZ in 1873. Researching the NZ side has been easy, but the UK side remains a mystery 🧐
