The Explorer was one of the first, if not the first, SUVs that wasn't designed to go offroad. They were advertised around malls and suburbs instead of offroad like the Bronco and Bronco II. It could however go offroad, and that was pure coincidence because it was designed using the Ranger's platform.
I had a 91 sport, added 99000. At 189 the tranny failed. Had a 94 XLT. Drove it for 13 years. Replaced the tranny somewhere in there Both pushed snow & pulled trailers. My present princess is a 94 Limited. 4 years on this one. Amazing trucksters!

Biggest problem with these were those awful 2-ply Firestone tires, auto-locking front hubs and Twin-I Beam suspension strut bushings.
This is now a collectable...who knew?

These were ok but they were noisy and rattled a lot. Stability was a problem too.
