Great review- thank you! I’m curious about your thoughts a year later now. Do you still enjoy the game? I would also be playing it mostly solo- do you play pure solo or two hand? Thoughts on the new campaign?
I actually enjoy Skytear Horde, because I’m not required to do deck building. I own the deluxe version and I‘m very happy that I have the additional decks from the campaign. They offer some really interesting gaming experiences. My son loves it as well and playing together is a lot of fun. So for me it was an easy decision to back the expansion. But I can understand that others are hesitant because of the price. Don’t back if you are uncertain. I’m also backing a lot less now and only those games or expansions where I really like what I see.
I like it a lot (and it's my son's current favorite co-op) and I haven't even considered deck construction as we've always just used the prec-con mono color decks (I do have the deluxe with 4 colors). I just like the gameplay.
Great review! I agree that the game will probably get better as the content pool grows. Deck building right now is too limited but I feel that its easy to see the potential and the new expansion content has me excited. So I'm right there with you on that investment haha One thing I don't think you mentioned for anyone who is on the fence due to potential death spiral games, I have found that it doesn't feel super bad to lose those games. It is so quick to reset and games are pretty short so a lost game isn't too big a deal. Plus, I have had fun clawing my way out of some seemingly impossible scenarios!
I'm very curious about the system, but not at the current all-in price point ($140 plus shipping). For $150, you can pick up Cloudspire for CTG. Also, Marvel Champions base box is $55. Will wait and see if I can pick this up secondhand a couple years down the road.
Ashes Reborn with the Red Rains solo expansion is fantastic. You can see the skeleton of MTG within it but the back and forth combat tempo combined with being able to choose your starting hand and flexible deckbuilding makes it very tactically interesting
Thanks for your thoughts. I was on the fence but I think I'll hold off for now. After hearing your thoughts on the base set and a playthrough I'm just not feeling it. I already have a bunch of Marvel Champions collecting dust because it just falls flat and I have no interest in deck creation.
I agree. I've only played once and thought it was way too easy on the easiest difficulty. I will need to ratchet it up. Plays great solo but don't think I'll ever play at 2 player.
Yeah very similar for me. Played three games but just wasn't enough for me. It was exactly as you said Liz - the base box just isn't enough. Deck construction wasn't fun for me. Going back to LOTR LCG I think.
Really interesting to hear your thoughts on this game - I really value and respect your opinion about these things. I've got the game and have played it a few times, and I REALLY want to like it. I really thought I was going to like it. But it just hasn't clicked for me. I feel like I'm missing something as so many people seem to really rate it. I think ultimately it's the stifled card draw and the fact that most of the cards don't feel like big events (in the way that they do in, say, Keyforge). Because of the pillage mechanism you could easily not even see your best cards and spend the whole game playing with mediocre deck fillers. Anyway, I'll give it another chance I'm sure - hopefully it will grow on me!
I support your justification! Was curious during first crowdfunding campaign but worried about replayability and variability so the new campaign looks like it takes care of that

A prudent choice!
I'm in the same boat. As much as I'd like to have everything, I'm sticking with the retail boxes as they become available at online game stores.
Yeah I’m surprised the campaign didn’t have options tailored for people who already have the base box and want only expansions.
So what are your final thoughs one year later now that you have had the chance to play with the expansions? 🙂
It’s here but still in shrink and I am trying to get to it!
@@BeyondSolitaire Looking forward to hear about it
Thank you very much for your honest thoughts!

Question for you: if you could only back one, Skytear Horde or Astro Knights?
If I didn’t have Aeon’s End already, then Astro Knights.
@@BeyondSolitaire thank you!
At least in Poland the game is readily available at retail, maybe it will be the same in other regions

Yeah you could be buying games you are wildly excited about instead! :D
@@BeyondSolitaire Yep, Ragemore is back in stock at Button shy so I went with that and finishing up Iron Helm.

I tried it and I didn't like it. Bought deluxe edition for 80 sold for 70. Oh well...I just didn't like the don't get a card unless you killed a card.
Yeah I don't blame you! It's definitely a personal taste thing.

Thank you for validating my choices. Lol!
