Allen is not a bad defensive coordinator. But his defensive scheme is more complex than Diaz's and it's going to take some time before the players can execute their assignments without thinking. The good news is that they have 4 more weeks (and 3 games) to fully learn their assignments. The USC game will show whether the pass defense is playoff caliber or not.
Manny Diaz's system took time to adjust to, as well. I think most Penn State fans were waiting for his true defense to show up in 2022. It did not happen right away.
Listen, any talk of already getting rid of Tom Allen is crazy. I'm not saying I don't understand why somebody with a lot of passion and not as much experience would get excited and think something so crazy however... Franklin picked him because of his football mind. Because he was able to put together good defenses without a lot of exceptional talent around him. He didn't pick him because he had a number one defense in the country at Alabama or wherever else. He didn't pick him because he's used to plugging four and five star Blue Chip players in as subs. Franklin picked him because he is able to put together a solid game plan and then adapt during the course of the game. He is able to get the most out of his players. So let's be honest about what happened this weekend. PSU came off of a huge win at West Virginia. Bowling Green was a let down game. No matter how much the coaches preach you can never take the foot off the gas, that's exactly what happened on defense. In the first half there was no energy. The guys were not moving the way they are capable of moving. They weren't wrapping up tackles. They came out and basically said you punch us in the mouth a bunch of times and we can take it. We were not opportunistic. We didn't play with energy and put them on their heels. Bottom line, a lot of the guys on the defense figured they could show up and look like superstars because it was bowling Green and they learned a lesson on Saturday. So let's not focus on the first half. Let's focus on how Tom Allen went into the locker room, manipulated his game plan, motivated his players and how the defense played in the second half. Because they did. They played the second half exactly the opposite of the way they played the first half. And that is the hallmark of a great coach. You're not always going to have the upper hand when the coin gets tossed. But if you can adjust and overcome a slow start you can win a whole lot of football games. Especially folks, especially when the offense is beginning to look a lot like the 1994 Penn State nittany Lions. Need one more receiver to step up and we are going to be looking at an offense just as prolific as that 94 team. And considering that was the greatest of all time scoring wise the defense doesn't even have to be perfect like last year, and the year before, and the year before that, and the year before that, and so on and so forth into antiquity! Lol Now with all that said, Tom you need to have three linebackers on the field at linebacker U. We need to offer three scholarships for starting linebackers or we are going to start losing recruits at that position. Come on Franklin, you have to get Tom on board here!
Agreed, give them a little credit 👏 as well!!! Tom Allen and the defense will be fine, trust me Nittany nation!!! His players were not prepared to play against the pass. Simple rub plays that they run in high school, the DBs were arguing over who was going to take which receivers. They often did not funnel receivers to the safety, and overall the defense played *bad* football. I suspect the BG coaching staff saw them struggle with this against WVU and they took advantage of it with a veteran team. That's on the defensive coordinator no matter how you slice it.
Not on the DC. If the DBs are weak in fundamental skills like what to do in cover 1, it's on the position coach. You want Smith and Dex gone? That's simply dumb
@@panosalexakos4877 I don't want anyone gone, I want it fixed. And if they can't do it, hire someone who can. College football is big business, you judge it the same way you judge NFL coaches: you win or you're gone.

I don’t believe we should fire Tom Allen. That’s ridiculous.. however, his defense should make adjustments as problems develop, and not wait til halftime to do so. They can’t afford to have a terrible first half against any great team.. or even a MAC team. Ask ND.
Easier said than done, when making adjustments as soon as possible. Bowling Green is doing the same thing on its side. Sometimes it works right away, and other times it does not.

Tom Allen is not making bonehead decisions. The right DB in cover 1 was not pushing the WR to the safety. These are Terry Smith's and Dex's guys. You want them gone?
I get what you're saying, but imagine if they were playing against OSU, or Ga. or Texas...do you think the ending would have been the same? Why didn't Tom recognize the problem during the surprising 1st quarter and adapt during the 2nd quarter? PSU had more depth than BG...they won't have the same advantage against the top 5 teams. He was outcoached in the first half, pure and simple. He better get his pile together during this break or things will get real during the meat of the schedule. And why didn't the offense score more in the 2nd half? They only scored 2 td's with arguably one of the best QB's and best backfields in the Big 10. Why couldn't THEY adapt to the BG defense? A win is a win, but these are serious questions that must be addressed if a championship is in their future this year.
A championship is not in Penn State's future even if the "serious questions" are addressed. Their ceiling is winning a 1st round home game in the playoffs.
According to AI bowling Green ran 7 plays in the second quarter against us. That seems about right. How exactly would you have any coach make adjustments off of seven plays in real time?
@@nothingbutmilk6576Yeah I don't think that's necessarily true. If they were to get everything worked out there are maybe two or three teams in the country they couldn't beat without a perfect storm. I would say at least two playoff victories and with a lot of luck they could win a championship.
Exactly USC, OSU and even Washington have the capacity and talent to hang 30+ in one half if that's the defense that shows up. Not to mention much more talented and disciplined position players

The PSU defense did NOT tackle the ball well at all, essentially the entire game. The defense did sharpen after halftime and the adjustments that were made; however, the D lacked physicality and toughness throughout. BG has a lot of seniors, a solid QB, they are well coached, extremely well prepared. Their coach said they essentially "ran out of bullets" against PSU and just did not have the time the week prior to game plan on offense for more plays / variety. There was also an utter lack of pressure on the QB for much of the game, until Q4 really. All I heard from Franklin this summer was how physical the practices have been.
