My hometown. Amazing how clean and well-kept everything is. Community pride. Been in Los Angeles for 26 years now but hope to make it back for a show at The Devon Amphitheatre next Summer :)
16:43 We were downtown the day they placed the ‘C’ on top of the building. There was a vertical column of lights that ran through the middle of the C that were animated to tell you whether the temperature was rising or falling. Different colors and patterns on the C would tell you whether to expect snow or rain.
18:14 Yes, Carson Jewelers was there, then the main K’s Merchandise store, then I think Leath Furniture, the record store and I want to say Fanny May candy store.
7:32 I believe the fountain as shown on the right is the one that was there when I was a kid. My parents would sometimes stop and park the car so we could watch the lights change at night.
Depending how old you are that fountain has changed three times. That one is the current one. It looked like a bowl before that. Yes the library has chased after the buildings where the former Sears were. Originally the library was in a Carnegie built building where Soy Capital bank is now.
17:19 I think that near corner is where Carson Pirie Scott was (later it housed the K’s Merchandise Annex). I don’t remember what else was on that side of the street.
John McKee's World, remember when you said that everyone eventually returns to Decatur? It is not totally off the table, as the cost of living where I am at is overwhelming and tiring.
Either they come back to visit or they come back to live due to circumstances that they are going through but the bottom line is they end up coming back. Decatur is a magnet. And a bit of a sling.
Hey John, LA Jeffrey again. Decatur born and raised❤ Do you ever do shots in the Southside area? If not, would it be possible to do more West Side brick street areas around Fairview? Great work you do 😊
20:17 I’m trying to remember if Black’s hardware was on that lot to the left or if it was on the block behind you next to the former library. I’m thinking it was close to the library.
They are no longer there. There are a lot of old businesses no longer there. Decatur is slowly turning into a ghost town. If it wasn’t for ADM or Tate & Lyle Decatur would be a dead city.
I've lived here for like 25 years.I never knew Decatur did a farmer's market and I never knew the library was the old Sears. That's awesome
You must of never gotten out if you didn’t know that.
@@JohnMcKeesWorld yeah I guess not

Informative video. Thank you for sharing.

Park street is a single block of gigantic houses that goes into fairview park off W Main
Correct
12:36 Had quite a few lunches at Robbie’s outlet while working downtown in the mid 90s. The fresh-baked bread was outstanding.

Carson was down on the next corner.
15:29 If I remember right that block used to house Woolworth’s, Osco Drug and a few other businesses.
Good job, John. Thank you! Decatur will always be a part of me!
33:15 Both my parents and several other family members went to the old Decatur High. I still have my mom’s yearbook from 1959.
5:30 I don’t remember that building housing anything before Sears. I believe the former public library location was also previously home to Sears.
22:45 That’s the former Haines and Essick’s building, right? I saw the Striglo’s truck in the back too.
19:50 I think the building to the right of the Avon was JC Penneys before they moved to the mall.
Yes they were across the street from Sears

23:48 Yep. Remember getting my trombone there when I started band in 5th grade.
good morning

10:35 It’s odd to see the different direction of traffic on Merchant Street.

I don’t remember, sorry.
Also, how about footage of the Devon Amphitheater?
Perhaps NEXT Summer, I can see some bands I know there.
Sorry John, I had to leave the live early as our little granddaughter was calling us. Will catch what I missed later. Have a good weekend.
Thanks for watching
@@JohnMcKeesWorld always!
Sad to hear that the Decatur Celebration is no longer held. Had a lot of fun listening to bands, eating street food and seeing friends.
Agreed, Rusty. Small city pride 👍
25:47 I see the Quigle’s furniture emblem on the building on the next block. I assume they’re no longer in business.

@@JohnMcKeesWorld Depressing. My hometown will always have my love.
and not a single person shopping.
I was on Park street 🤪
Is there anything you're sure about ?
I don’t understand. Elaborate.
Slow and boring.
Sorry you felt that way. Should I had ran next time?
