Speaking as an old Brit who has lived most of his life in Africa, (I have few ties to America apart from a few cousins somewhere around Chicago), I must say that I find your programmes quite fascinating. Always interesting and informative, they give me a chance to see a country that I would have loved to have toured but that will probably never happen now. Many thanks for all the effort you put in; it is very much appreciated. This edition was excellent. I love the food / bar / hotel inserts as well; that is apart from the side effect that I am now desperate for some old school bread pudding like my mother used to make many, many years ago. Thanks a lot and safe travels to you both.

Lived most of my life in and around Spfld before moving to Texas. Spent many hours researching family history under the old capitol building downtown. Now it's in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Lived within walking distance of the Illinois State Fair and I would walk the kids down there every year. So many good memories of living in Spfld. Thanks for posting this ❤❤❤❤

There are so many places I'm a bit too old to see getting to. This hallowed ground is one of them. Thank you for showing us. Your insight and opinions are so refreshing. My appreciation to you both. The first book I ever bought with my own money was "Lincoln" by Stefan Lorant. I was in the 7th grade, and it was the beginning of my great love of history.

You solved a mystery for me today Mr Spoda! I was raised in Naperville, IL. When my parents passed away I received the family picture album. There is a black and white picture of me, my brother, and sister dated 1956 of us on a large building I couldn’t remember. Guess what? It’s taken on Lincoln’s Tomb! We were up on the stairs so back then they must have had it open. What a surprise for me! Thanks for the video and solving my mystery. Safe travels!

    1. You didn’t rub Abe’s nose at the tomb
    2. It appears you did not get a horseshoe for any of your meals. The horseshoe was invented in Springfield’s Leland Hotel. Springfield has great chili, and Mel-O-Cream Donuts.

I have tears in my eyes after watching this video. Your honor, respect, and beautiful words touched my heart. My father took us on road trips in our Pontiac station wagon. My parents had ten of us kids so it was quite an endeavor. I can’t travel or drive anymore at 74 so I now ride along with you on your road trips. This tour of Abraham Lincoln’s tomb broke my heart. The monument is stunning, but the statues and interior of the tomb was so elegant and beautiful. I’m glad his family is also buried with him. I know “from dust we were created and to dust we return” , but at least he has the wife and children he loved close to him. Thank you so much for your respectful tone of voice, your love of history, and your love of old buildings and history. The capital building was astounding! The floor treatment, the statuesque light fixtures on the staircase, and the magnificent dome are totally Amazing! Thank you for the tour of the museum. You are gifting all of us with an experience and a sense of history I personally could not have without you. Thank you so much. Sincerely, Annie

As a current Springfield resident, there are two things I hoped you would have done and seen. First thing is that the tomb you were at is actually his second tomb, if you drive down to the bottom of the hill it sits in, you can see the first tomb where many grace robbers attempted to break in and steal his and Mary’s bodies. It’s honestly cooler than the current one imo. The second thing is that I hoped you would have gotten a horseshoe as it’s a Springfield staple! Obeds had them, but the best places are Dublin pub or Darcy’s pint. They are rivals since both claim to be have the original horseshoe recipe. I hope you come back and visit the state fair sometime because in the grandstand, a local funeral home has on display the horse drawn hearse used to carry Lincoln’s body. It’s quite a sight!

Lincolns original tomb was located behind the current tomb at the bottom of the hill. There were also several attempts to steal Lincoln's body as the tomb was being built. The reason he was buried ten feet down. Lincoln's body was viewed by his son years later to confirm it was his father. The body was said to be in remarkable condition due to the number of embalming that were done on the body's travel from Washington to Springfield.

It’s REALLY hard to believe the USA is “the most powerful country in the world…” with scenery like what you bring to us in all these destroyed and left-behind rural areas.
Their REALLY IS a “top one-percent “ in the USA and then there’s everyone else…many whom live a life as these impoverished and suffering rural areas.
Companies have exported all the blue collar jobs to mexico and communist china and left the founding people of said companies high and dry.
Meanwhile, communist china is becoming the wealthiest and most powerful country because of the fact. Sickening.

Very cool visiting the Lincoln sites, they're definitely on my road trip bucket list. At 3:00, "I have the tomb all to myself..." hmmm, not sure if that's a good thing or not 🙂. Interesting to see Abe's bust was sculpted by Guyzon Borglum (you know, he did a bigger version in South Dakota). I kept expecting to see a kid with a spiky haircut cruise by on a skateboard, but I maybe I'm thinking of a different Springfield.

I've been to a few Lincoln sites, but visiting that cemetery in 2011 was one of the greatest tourist experiences I've ever had. We also had the place to ourselves and got a private tour from someone who worked or volunteered there. ... They do give tours of his house if you go at the right time. But I think we stopped at the national park tourist center first and bought a ticket for that.

There's always so much negativity about our Illinois, however we have much to be proud of!
In 1863, our own Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was initiated to free the slaves. 150 years later the highest office in our country was held by a black man, Barack Obama, who also called Illinois home. The system is not perfect, but Illinois should be proud.

Laurie…c’mon! Barack Obama is said to be our nation’s first black President…but his mother, Anne Dunham, was white. He’s for certain a mulatto….as all of us really are. In order to be referred to as black, white or whatever…you’d need both parents to be of the same race you’re striving to claim as your own….& that’s if it really matters to you. For most of us it doesn’t. Won’t it be a great day when we stop wearing our race on our sleeves?

I think I had seen a tour by C-SPAN many years ago when they took a bus around the country and visited Presidential homes (I think they also went inside). Anyway so glad they kept the neighborhood the way they did. I put a star on the map to visit someday but after watching your video I think I'll upgrade the star and try and get there this year. Sometimes he’s doing martial arts, sometimes he doing hip thrusts at traffic as they wait by the light, and other times he’s laying shirtless on the concrete looking directly into the sun. We live in Springfield, IL, and I've been looking forward to your doing a video here. Did you happen to notice the shiny nose on Lincoln's bust in front of his tomb? That's because there's a legend that rubbing his nose brings good luck. I've rubbed it a couple times, not because I'm superstitious, but it's just a local tradition.
You just barely scratched the surface of Lincoln's history in the Springfield area. In March, 1830, the Lincoln family settled in Macon County, IL on the north side of the Sangamon River. Their home was about 35 miles east of Springfield. A year later, Abe piloted a flatboat that navigated the Sangamon, Illinois, and Mississippi Rivers to take supplies to New Orleans. The boat got stuck on a dam near the town of New Salem, just a few miles northwest of Springfield, and it took him several hours to free it. On his return, he settled in New Salem. He became partner in a store there. The original town no longer exists. Most of the population, ALONG WITH THE HOMES, were moved to Petersburg to the north. In the 1930's the town was reconstructed to look as close as possible to the way it was when Lincoln was there, and is a fascinating place to visit.
Lincoln's tomb (under the memorial you saw) is encased in 2 tons of Portland cement. This is because on Nov. 7, 1876, there was an attempt to steal his body. The plot was hatched by a gang of Chicago counterfeiters. Their chief engraver had been arrested, and they planned to take Lincoln's body and exchange it for the freedom of their partner. The plot came to the attention of the Secret Service, which was involved not because Lincoln had been president, but for their original purpose of stopping counterfeiters. Ironically, it was Lincoln who, as President, had originally formed the Secret Service! I won't go into more detail. Suffice it to say that the whole story is like a Keystone Cops comedy, because of the ineptness of both the good guys and the bad guys.
By the way, the Dana-Thomas House and Lincoln's house are both open for tours. The Old Capitol is also generally open for tours, but is periodically closed for maintenance. You were just there at the wrong time. Oh, and we love Obed and Isaac's. Their flatbreads are wonderful!!

I did a search for "nose" in the comments because if no one else had explained the tradition, *I* was going to do it. I'm from northern Illinois, and our small town (like many others) would send 8th grade students to Springfield (and New Salem) every year, which is where I learned about the nose tradition, some 50 years ago.

In total honestly it's not worth anyone's visit. What you can see on UA-cam video such as this is the best you'll get visiting Springfield. Problem with tourism in Springfield is the return factor which there is none. If anyone visited Lincoln sites five to ten years ago it safe to say it looks just as it does as you last visited. City could have piggy back on The Simpsons but instead they have dig their heels on Abe Lincoln and only Abe Lincoln. However I do say some famous people did live in Springfield before they got famous. NBA Finals MVP Andre Iguodala went to high school here. John Wayne Gacy lived here work with the local Shriners. I know I have painted Springfield with a bad brush in the 25 year I have gone to school, worked, and lived. Anyone who wants to visit will probably leave disappointed and felt they could have spent the money here somewhere much more fun and leave with better memories. Thank for your visit I really enjoy your videos.

Just found your videos and enjoy them... if you're ever in Springfield again, the head bust of Lincoln outside of his tomb, you didn't mention it but his nose is shiny and it's "good luck" to rub it!

On a local note, then white and black hotel is lovingly called the Prick of the Prairie by us locals. Crime is only high on the south east side of town. When visiting try a Horseshoe sandwich, not good for you, but tastes great! Pritzger lives in Chicago and rarely comes downstate.

Hi Joe, I was born there and have been back many times. My grandparents rented a home down the street from the capital. The home was around when Abraham Lincoln walked the streets to the capital.

The first courtroom Lincoln practiced law in us in Decatur, IL. at the Macon County historical museum. If you ever visit in the summer and go in don’t shut the front door. It’s an old cabin and was also the first courthouse for Decatur.

While there is a fair amount of crime in Springfield, it is mostly confined to a few areas of the city. Where I live there is virtually no crime. While housing prices are low, property taxes are very high. There are lots of nice restaurants in Springfield - politicians have expense accounts! Also some very nice parks and other historic buildings, other than the Lincoln house.

Salem IL. the Lincoln tour is not complete without driving the 30 miles northwest to the rebuilt Salem village. A town of 1820 log cabins where Lincoln spent his teenage years. Best on a crisp fall day.

I lived in Springfield for 4 years late 60’s early 70’s. We lived in the Hay Homes. Anyone from there will know what I’m talking about. I was Cub Scout. Me and lots of other scouts would make an annual pilgrimage from downtown Springfield to Lincoln’s Tomb.

I grew up in Girard and Virden. In the late 60's and early 70's I lived in Springfield and worked at Pillsbury and Fiat Allis. I drove by the Hay homes many, many times at 11th St. and Carpenter St. I used to stop in and have a beer at Billy D's Tavern at 11th and Cook St. I am now 75 years old and retired from the U.S. Navy living down the road from Charleston, SC

    Good evening Lord Spoda,
this is very interesting, and a very impressive cemetery. The old state capitol looks very good. There's some history dripping out of the walls in this city.
You said he was born in poverty but he was self taught to become a lawyer. If you want to get off your arse and work for your dream you can do it, just takes the balls and courage of your convictions and ignoring the nay sayers.
Frank Lloyd Wright and my interest goes even higher.
Had to hit pause and look at the "new" State Capitol building, what a mix of styles going on there and it all works, it's bloody amazing. Then you went inside .... gobsmaked!
The museum, he comes across as a very deterimed man who would focus on what he wanted and anything else was a side issue, such as the children running riot. Other social issues to the detriment of the people where high on his priorities.
The library is a bit disappointing .... but it's drinks time! Food looks good, miss corned beef.
Delivered in a non-political way that was easy to understand, as most of us English bastards know who Lincoln was but may have not studied his life in our history lessons.
Very impressive 37 minute documentary from the "man on the street" perspective of Lincoln.
Thank you for the tour and as always, be safe
