I almost skipped going to a certain Wembly Concert when I was visiting the UK .... I will never regret the money I spent, the hours I cued. Seeing these guys live was an experience.
Surprised and delighted to land on this tonight. Have always loved their 'Staying Power' performance. For sure neither musician intended to let the others down. Freddie flying about like he does between the other three & even pulling in the fans keeps them all HOT! Great review, sir!
"I don't want the video to go on too long...." I DO! :) Freddie.... he was unique and "talented". They were all really good at what they did and apparently got along really well ref the songwriting. Eclectic. That's the perfect word for them. You never knew exactly what a new Queen album would be except it'd somehow sound like Queen!
The best thing about the Queen movie is that both of my grandkids (17 and 14) have discovered Queen. They can't get enough! They took all of my CDs and have watched every youtube video. Personally, I think Freddie was the best frontman ever! Thanks, Fil! And to quote another comment: Who the heck doesn't love Queen?
This live version of "Staying Power" is better than the original version from the Hot Space album. It's way more aggressive and high energy. Also, even though it's kind of hard to see in this video, John Deacon is playing the funky, scratchy rhythm guitar part. The bass line is being played by the backup keyboardist (who is not visible onscreen). Great performance!
Fil - your enthusiasm is infectious - it's obvious you love it by that smile on your face. I can assure you as a fellow musician I know that feeling, that buzz, that high that music gives. Sheer joy. As for Staying Power - this live version kicks a surprising amount of ass! Sometimes a band HAS to take a risk stylistically, even if some deem it a failure. At least Queen were so talented and diverse that they could try new things.
Exactly, some bands get stale trying to produce the same 'kind' of song hoping it'll be a hit like the previous ones. But music should always be a clean slate, just create without boundaries and see what is produced. This is something I really liked about Queen, this diversity.
This was the third and final time for me seeing Queen live , luckily I knew a ticket scalper who got me #4 - 4th row , in front of Brian seats for this concert at The Spectrum Philly Pa 🙂

Really glad you played that song. like Freddie said the album was ahead of its time. I thought it was a brilliant album and I think they did the right thing, why not be different, like you said some people said oh this isn’t Queen, this isn’t heavy rock but I don’t think those sort of people appreciate diversity and trying all different angles. I’m sure it helps you find the best, improve and keep the interest there. Thanks mate, you talk sense!
Queen was that rare phenomenon that could make their album fillers sound like hits in a live setting. Another great gem of an album cut. If you can, cover early Queen. Either “White Queen” or my personal favorite “In The Lap Of The Gods (revisited)” both live at the Rainbow ‘74 which is an awesome concert. Awesome video dude, rock on \m/
@@wingsofpegasus Fil, an analysis of early Queen vs this era of Queen would be interesting. Or even better, just an analysis of White Queen from A Night at the Odeon - Hammersmith 1975, which was early Queen in a simply phenomenal performance. It's long-haired Freddie at his best, your insight could enlighten us all why he was just so damn good even from the start. ua-cam.com/video/f8usNj4x9NA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=QueenOfficial

I have this album, and I listen to it allll the time, as does my teenaged, guitar playing son. I just listened to it twice on a long flight recently. It calmed my nerves, lol. My son really enjoys your vids too! Cheers!
Queen had so many “hidden” depths! I am continually amazed by their genre-bending. You should listen to their live performance of See What A Fool I’ve Been from their “Live at the Rainbow” concert, March ‘74. There’s no video footage, unfortunately, but I would love to hear your reaction to this one!
I don't think Brian and Roger were crazy about that time in Freddies life but I loved it. Can you do an analysis of Mother Love which was Freddies last song and Brian had to finish it?
Saw them in Atlanta when I was 18 (August 24, 1982, Omni Coliseum). even with "nose-bleed" seats, it was a phenomenal concert. Was the best I've ever seen, for sure.
Incredible versatility and talent. These guys are amazing. Love that John sounds so funky in the bass. I’d listen to them sing a grocery list and be thrilled😂❤
I thought Hot Space was a poor follow-up to The Game at the time but this song rocks live! Freddie's vocal versatility to be able to sing many different styles of music is another reason why he is the greatest front-man of all time. It'd be cool to see you check out YYZ from Rush at their concert in Rio.
I loved this song growing up in California. I didn't know it was Queen til years later, but the energy was so fun!!

I was fortunate to first see Queen after their release of Sheer Heart Attack" in a small venue seating about 2000. Fifth row. Blown away. And all considering the fact that when I first heard the album, I hated it. But on the second listen, I was hooked! (Perseverence is the key, I guess... 😉) Anyway, thanks for posting this gem! You rock, Fil! 👍🤘👏😀
Another great video. This was a great concert, heart and Joan jett were the support acts. Wasn't a big fan of this track on hot space as it was very synth based and rather 'thin'. Live I think the way Brian may and John deacon revisioned the riff for guitar was brilliant. I know Brian wasn't a big fan of this album as for a decade before he was proud to use the guitar multilayered to create incredible effects. Your videos are very good Phil, just don't worry about the length. If anything id like to hear more analysis. Also enjoyed your vai video. Keep it up!
i think you should indulge your self with a little bit of Freddie Mercury singing opera - the most famous is Barcelona or you could always take a track of the album Barcelona - to show the fans really how good Freddie was not only in English but Japanese too.
Ian Nicholls oh my God, that’s my all time favorite performance of that song. Freddie’s voice sounded more emotional and beautiful than ever. It’s pretty much the only version I listen to these days.
I have a young friend in a death metal band who doesn’t like them and another musician my age who also can’t say anything good about them. Other than that almost everyone I know can find at least one good thing to say about them.

San Francisco Cow Palace 1976 Ancient wood frame venue... the rafters were jumping in place. THE MOST vocal show ever ! Right after ' Night at the opera '. This mob of very good friends were musicians first and foremost; and, upon submitting this video as my only evidence, I rest my case.
Really enjoy your analysis videos-Thanks for sharing your expertise, your love of music and your deep respect for fellow musicians. Have you taken a look at Queen’s Spread Your Wings yet (video filmed in Roger’s backyard, apparently)?
Staying Power has always been one of those tracks I skip on Hot Space, but after hearing this live performance, it's taken on a whole new dimension (for me) and is another example where the studio version doesn't always capture the depth and intention of a song.
Absolutely. There have been many times where I'm walking around town with earbuds on, listening to Queen while bobbing and smiling and people stop me and ask "What are you listening to? You're having such a good time with it." lol
Hi Phil! A shout out from a fellow guitarist from across the pond! I love your videos. Any way I know you have done Steve Via before. He's an awesome guitarist no doubt but have you ever seen the Attitude Song live with Mike Kenealy as his second guitarist? You probably have but I think it's worth a look. Any one who can keep up with Via while wearing a silly purple hat has my vote lol. Keep up the good work!
I never understood the detractors regarding this song. Sure, it wasn’t “Death On Two Legs” or “Tie Your Mother Down” but it was interesting and exciting with a great arrangement. And when I saw them perform it at Madison Square Garden I loved the bonus of seeing John Deacon playing guitar. (I was 16, LOL)
Hot Space was classified as the worst album Queen ever produced. Tracks like this and Action this Day from it played live is a total different ball game! Absolutely awesome!
It seems like one of those totally self indulgent numbers that they are just having a blast playing. Freddy seems to be enjoying it the most and is letting loose on the vox. \m/
Some people talk about Hot Space as the album that nobody liked, including the band. But that's what true artists do -- they experiment, they try new things. Not every one of them is going to be #1. But Queen were a group of insanely talented musicians, so they could take even the not-#1 songs and do this with them. That's why they were who they were.
It's my understanding based on what I've read, that Brian May and Roger Taylor were not real happy with the musical direction of Queen at this time. Freddie had apparently taken the reigns on the album "Hot Space". This song is the opening track of that album. What is amazing about this performance is just how tight and funky it is. No evidence of "creative differences" in this blistering rendition of of the song. Queen weren't just supremely talented. They were true professionals who gave their fans everything they had in spite of whatever problems they were having behind the scenes. A band for All-Time! P.S. I hear a little bit of influence from "Royal Orleans" and "Hots on for Nowhere" by Zeppelin in this song. Probably just me.
Somebody to Love & Dragon Attack are good From this show as well. Brian breaks a string during dragon attack & Deacon fills in. At another show, Freddie tells the audience c’mon it’s just some songs.
Here is another example of their depth: Their professionalism. Brian was having trouble with the organ because of the wind, and Freddie's voice was shot from the tour. Yet, they pulled it together for this performance in 1986: ua-cam.com/video/MOhuK7aZayw/v-deo.html
I only seen one bar band cover Bohemian Rhapsody and do a good job most of the others would do like Tie Your Mother Down because it was a straight up rocker. This particular song reminds me of Zeppelin's The Crunge. But there was a few influences going on with Queen which made them so versatile. And this might not be your cup of tea but would you review this one? It's by Pantera with the late Dimebag Darrell; Domination (Solo). ua-cam.com/video/_kpI1ez5KkA/v-deo.html
Best "not Queen" version I've ever seen of Bohemian Rhapsody is Pentatonix. Excellent! Very respectful and true rendering. ua-cam.com/video/ojRj2JK5oCI/v-deo.html
If the songs they did here from the Hot Space album were the versions on the Hot Space album. The Hot Space album could well be on of their best albums
"Hot Space" imo wasn't a bad album, of course "Dancer" and "Body language" suck, but "Staying power" live was really good and Freddie's dancing really helps any live performance 😂
wingsofpegasus Yeah Queen, ok, to be fair Freddie and John got the "Another one bites the dust effect". It was such a big hit(i think it is Queen's best selling single) that they went a little bit to far trying to recreate that success with some songs on Hot space.
6:51 Extreme has a live cover (of the album version of the song) that's recorded on video. ua-cam.com/video/eBBkp4Bi3fI/v-deo.html They did it all right, yet it doesn't capture the 'feel'. No offense to the guys, great musicians, Extreme, but nothing and no one could/can/will be able to match or come close to the 'magical chemistry' Queen possessed in their time. Legends.
Of course, you are listening to a sound track tweaked for the DVD… the difference between that and what the audience heard live in Milton Keynes (and on Live TV on Channel 4) is significant. For a start Rogers electronic drums sound dated now, as they were very 80’s trend which has long since worn off, so they have largely been manipulated to sound like regular drums on the DVD. Same with the additional keyboards, some very 80’s sounds which have been tweaked to sound less dated. Main difference for the core band is that live John’s bass (although he aint playing it in this track, but this applied to the rest of the show) was much louder and more prominent in the mix on the night, live he could play the “I’m louder than you” game with BHM and RMT when he felt like it (and to some extent they played games with each other like that all the time), DVD mixes John down significantly (possibly because he was less involved in the DVD mix). Same with Queens Wembley DVD, Johns bass is significantly lower down in the mix on the DVD than he actually was on the night live for the audience (I know I was there, but also there are copies of what went out to the audience on the night around, which make a good contrast). Of course, all live albums (and DVD’s/BlueBay’s) get the sound refined compared to what actually went out on the night, but it’s always interesting to hear what those differences are. And as we discussed earlier Johns rhythm playing live in MK, on those songs he didn’t play bass, was brilliant. And a good insight into that side of him, after all there are lots of tracks with John on guitar and no Brian (such as cool cat, misfire, etc). Cheers
Yeah the mixes are often bass heavy live, then for dvd it remixed from the output channel from the mixer recorded on the day. Interestingly I was watching Bon Jovi's performance when he was inducted into the hall of fame, the phone footage shows him singing flat a lot. But for the tv release his voice has been auto-tuned and sounds a lot better. Queen definitely didn't need this, but it's a shame this kind of thing is common place nowadays.
there is a good analysis of live killers at www.queenlive.ca/livekillers.htm for the montreal live DVD they played 2 nights, and picked the best of each night per song (and often the sound is from one night and the visuals from the other). Fred got upset with the camera crew so ruined their continuity on purpose by wearing different outfits on different nights, so the DVD looks like he changes costume a lot. so Queen did manipulate, but yea not as much as some people. Thin Lizzy Live Killers is the classic live LP that had much work done in the studio, but still sounds great anyways so I forgive anything. Best Wishes
A good performance of a track from the unfairly maligned Hot Space album. The songs they chose to play live from it ended up sounding a lot heavier live. The second half of Hot Space has somgs on it that wouldn't have sound out of place on the preceeding album. Body Language is the only track I tend to skip on a play through. The album just needed a bit more guitar!
If only they had recorded 'Staying Power' and 'Action This Day' a little more like they were played live on their 1982 tour - Hot Space would have been far more popular than it is.
I almost skipped going to a certain Wembly Concert when I was visiting the UK .... I will never regret the money I spent, the hours I cued. Seeing these guys live was an experience.

Yeah he left us much too soon.
Freddy had plenty of stamina. He contracted a little understood disease that at that time was incurable. He probably contracted it in the 1970's

They were true professionals who gave their fans everything they had in spite of whatever problems they were having behind the scenes. A band for All-Time!
P.S. I hear a little bit of influence from "Royal Orleans" and "Hots on for Nowhere" by Zeppelin in this song. Probably just me.
Yeah they kept a very professional attitude the whole time.
Somebody to Love & Dragon Attack are good
From this show as well. Brian breaks a string during dragon attack & Deacon fills in.
At another show, Freddie tells the audience c’mon it’s just some songs.
Agree.
seen them in there early days, Freddy almost stole the show, but the band was so strong and powerful
it all even out. RIP Freddy

Best "not Queen" version I've ever seen of Bohemian Rhapsody is Pentatonix. Excellent! Very respectful and true rendering.

Thanks dude!
Freddie is an amazing composer, a brilliant singer, an exquisite piano player, a decent guitar player...but one thing he could not do was...dance. :D
Four songwriters with number one songs you will not see that again.
Yeah all in the same band, nowadays bands have writers who aren't even IN the band!
Still a great workout song. Get it on your play list.
Andres Grimace I like "Dancer" too, but "Body Language" is definitely not my cup of tea.
Kennet Queen is my fav band, but those two songs, i just can't even laugh at them. Just awful 😣
Yeah this live version was great! I think it's impossible to hit the bullseye all the time considering the amount Queen wrote!
wingsofpegasus Yeah Queen, ok, to be fair Freddie and John got the "Another one bites the dust effect".
It was such a big hit(i think it is Queen's best selling single) that they went a little bit to far trying to recreate that success with some songs on Hot space.
Way before funk metal was a thing..
Brian and Roger hated that change in musical direction for the Hot Space album. But Freddie and John were enthusiastic about it.
Legends.
Saw this tour in Portland, Or. they play this very fast compared to the studio track.
Queen definitely didn't need this, but it's a shame this kind of thing is common place nowadays.
there is a good analysis of live killers at www.queenlive.ca/livekillers.htm
for the montreal live DVD they played 2 nights, and picked the best of each night per song (and often the sound is from one night and the visuals from the other).
Best Wishes
Great video
Thanks!
Hey man this has been mentioned by others before but plz do a Rush live video!
Thanks, I'm working my way through the suggestions so Rush will be done at some point!
Difference here is John playing rhythm not bass!
Yeah he can play some solid rhythm!
wingsofpegasus exactly
Not quite into this song, but LOVE it's funky style. That's why I love Extreme's album Pornograffitti!
*Aw.. Lovely :) «Goonies T-Shirt » Fil !! 100% XD
*Aw..Queen :) «No One's Like Them Ever With Or Without Freddie » « I'm Right Or Not» Lol ! Well , Thanks :) Fil !! 100% X3
Anyone know what time signature they are playing in? That's a cooking jam. Reminds me of James Brown.
I'll have to watch and count it out!
react to the new Freddie Mercury biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody Trailer
Thanks for the suggestion!
If only they had recorded 'Staying Power' and 'Action This Day' a little more like they were played live on their 1982 tour - Hot Space would have been far more popular than it is.
John on rhythm guitar!!
what song is this? queen is not on the drum?
You should react to the new Queen movie trailer
Thanks for the suggestion!
Will you please review The Prophet's song by Queen? It's a Masterpiece!
I'm not sure the copyrights allow it unfortunately!
Terrific take - no band has take up your offer to date. HA!
