    "There's been a mutiny aboard the Agatha King and UNN ships are firing on each other. If we engage, it will only unite them to turn their weapons on us. If they want to destroy each other, we will let them."
    The actor who plays Kirino delivers that final line with a distinct edge that stays with me. There's a lot of battle scenes in sci-fi but rarely hear this kind of meaningful level headed statement by a military character in a series.

    Nice quote. Neal Stephenson does a great job on this with one of his books where you are approaching a military confrontation. It happens and 90% of the characters you were reading about are pretty quickly dead. He gives a nice feel for how far things have to come off the rails to be depending on war to solve your problem. The war is going be much much worse than all the problems you had before hand. I'd also agree you don't want to lose the war but best if you can to avoid it.

    And she ended up being 100% correct in the end. That transmission caused immense infighting between the Terran forces to the point that they all began firing upon one another and all the Martian fleet had to do was just… turn around and fly back home. You got your enemy to unravel completely without firing a single bullet and got to return home with your entire fleet and all their crew members alive and accounted for. That’s what I call a great military mind, if I do say so myself.

    Kirino was one of my favorite characters because of this entire sequence. Unfortunately, when she was re-introduced later, she behaved in a manner completely out of the character that they had established for her. I have to presume that her later re-introduction was done to substitute her in the place of another character from the books, rather then introduce an entirely new character to the show. It's the only thing that, in my mind, explains why she acted later like an entirely different person.
    I also liked Klaes Ashford, and enjoyed watching the development of Drummer's character.
    Naturally, like everyone else, I loved "The Expanse's" Daryl, Amos Burton. He was, indeed, "that guy."

    • @crystallineentity
      @crystallineentity  Рік тому +32

      I agree, I found her behaviour later to be slightly jarring and out of character. That totally reckless assault on the ring station was just odd but yes she was probably being used to mash characters together.

      Season 6 was very rushed due to time constraints, but I'd really wish we got to know why she suddenly acted so rash, when she previously, as in this clip, was so careful in comparison.

    • @Justanotherconsumer

      She’s fighting earthers here.
      Later, she’s fighting belters.
      From a “typical racist” mindset - Earth is an equal, belters are subhuman scum.
      It may be little more than that - if that’s her mindset she doesn’t care if the belters die, and she doesn’t think they’re a real threat to her people.
      Even wise people are not wise on all things.

      The way they handled her in S6 was definitely jarring and out of character. But I think they could have had her end up the same, but just framed it differently and more plausibly. For instance, frame it as a sneak attack on Medina station by an MCRN stealth ship squadron specifically composed to overpower all the known Free Navy forces inside the ring space. It’s plausible that ever since the FN destroyed the Earth and Mars sentry ships guarding the Ring, that Earth and Mars had telescopes monitoring the ring from a distance and counting all FN forces assembling inside the ring space. Thus they could have formed a stealth strike group capable of taking out those forces, and there was some pressure to do it sooner rather than later so as not to give FN any more time to consolidate forces inside the Ring. Of course they had no way of knowing FN was receiving proto-tech reinforcements from Laconia system, so the outcome would still have been the same, but the reasoning for it less out of character at least.

    I hate when people use the word "underrated" for The Expanse... It's not underrated, it has like 9 or 10/10 ratings everywhere. It's just not well known. Underrated suggests something like "Oh it has bad ratings but fanboys say it's amazing" for a person that hasn't seen it
