That guy really needs to stop interrupting Roger.
Rainbow Sickness Yes but I've heard a LOT worse from the States, not even seeming to take the ''job'' seriously
What a prick this interviewer is. He asks Roger a hugely loaded question about Israel (which certainly couln't be answered quickly) and then decides to "move along" before Roger can explain himself.
Why did you ask the question in the first place if you weren't interested in the answer? I suppose so you could pat yourself on the back for "asking the tough questions".
Aside from the fact that the interviewer is sweating like a pig, presumably because he was a bit nervous knowing that he was going to have a go at Roger.
This is the new style of interview and "news" reporting. We'll just make you look however we want to with editing and not allowing you to finish your answers. Sad.
he was afraid of anti-Israel comments.
Tuomas Vainio Arent we all? it very easy to be stamped an anti semite thees days.
Fredrik Lund afraid? No. look at Max Keiser he left BBC because he couldn't mention Israel in any context. This kind of censorship leads to Gaza horror.
agree... interviewer needs to learn to listen..
Chris Lester interviews these days are shortened horribly to fit commercials, or are watered down to focus more on the entertainment side and less on anything intellectual. tv sucks. it didn't help that this interviewer is so wooden.
After watching this, I like Roger so much more
Yes, you're right.
***** Amen to that! I agree 100℅. For years I always thought of Roger as the d-ck that ruined Pink Floyd. I wish he & David would get together & write something. No matter what your opinion of R Waters NoBody (esp Polly) can write lyrics like " what is the shelf life of a teenage queen"?! And Nobody can write music to gell w/Roger's lyrics like David Gilmour.
+werdgerl and "diss eachother on sight" or whatever that horrible cringe-worthy lyric is :D
+John Smith Lol! Yes I love the endless river except for those cringe worthy lyrics on LTW! ;0)
Waters is absolutely right , his album amused to death is one of the best albums ever , it's as good as wish you were here maybe even better
can we have an interviewer with a little more patience for the interviewee...
1ranjeeves21 Its called hard talk for a reason duh
Despite his character and hastened decisions,I like Roger for being an important past of Pink Floyd. He sticks to his guns! shaming the pigs! and refuting disguised chronically victimised modern fascists.
Waters is and has been an enthusiastic supporter of the lying, conniving, ruling-class totalitarian egomaniac Obama. How is that "shaming the pigs" and "sticking to his guns"? The man's either very confused or a baldfaced hypocrite.
One has to have an opinion.
The Bruiser
ruling class totalitarian!? Why do conservative pricks listen to floyd!? Its really rather amazing.
The Bruiser
One day you should realize that easily throwing labels like "totalitarian" is immensely disrespectful to people who have actually suffered and died because of totalitarian systems. Only an indoctrinated idiot can have such an extreme view of a politician who's no different than the other American presidents before him.
Interesting!
Shows the impact that losing a parent has on someone, all through their life. We never stop being the children of our parents.
Poor Roger. The man was trying his hardest to not just tell the guy off. The interviewer in my opinion is an ass. Love rogers even more than ever!
This interviewer is really passive aggressive
Dewey Doody Oh yeah huh? I guess you're right
That's what hard talk is about that's the point of the show to play devil's advocate.
I agree. It's like he's in his investigative political journalist-mode, not realizing he's talking to a musician who doesn't really expect, or need, to be criticised.
Again, that is the entire premise of the show Hard Talk.
I see what you're saying but Roger Waters is a huge fucking prick so I'm not surprised.
Amused To Death as in fact a masterpiece and it by and large fell on deaf ears. That album was timely and cunning its scope of the state of the world.
I agree totally.
An amazing album, and very relevand to this day.
Jonathan Spengler It's relevance appears to increase as time goes on. Very remarkable.
He looks good for a 70 year old!
First time roger cried on camera
I agree with Mr. Waters, amused to death should deserve to be recognize a lot more. Its a fucking masterpiece. A whole religion trip and experience...
Wow another album, bring it on Mr. Waters!!!
it was barely 5 minutes into the interview and roger already got upset, man these bbc guys need to chill
14:49 "You are such a stirrer!"
What Roger said about "Amused To Death" is absolutely true. It ranks in my top five albums of all time......."This species has amused itself to death",,,,,,GRW
22:50 I'm sorry Roger, nothing is better than Animals.
+Mr__Pickle He's delusional lol.
Isn't it amazing how much influential his father has been to him even though he never really knew him.
If you are a father (like I am) then it makes you realise the incredible responsibility we have to love them and guide them.
I felt incredible moved by his reaction.
They're trying to keep our feelings off the street!
Christianity is blasphemed constantly in sitcoms, yet Roger must justify putting a star of David on a pig in his show. Shows you who's in control. Anyway, I wish he'd write a book because I love his writing.
Christianity is a joke thats why, just like all religions
Dewey Doody A) Anyone can pretend to be a follower of anything for the sake of an election. B) Ever watch The Simpsons? Nuff said.
Dewey Doody What's your point? Yes, the Simpsons is a cartoon which ridicules Christians. Obama was rumoured to be Muslim but still got elected and no one now gives a rat's ass, except some with a cross to bear, or should I say a Star of David. Get over yourself.
Dewey Doody Truth hurts.
The interviewer is quite the mixer, but I must say he did ask some very interesting questions. Also, having seen Roger here I find I like the guy so much more than I thought.
22:44 LOL! at Rodger's face when the guy interrupts him!
People who prefer Roger Syd Barrett tend to be crazy cool artists.
People who prefer Roger Waters tend to be more emotional and compassionate
People who prefer David Gilmour just like pretty stuff without much substance.
David's guitar-work sings like few others, but NO ONE writes like Roger Waters, even today. I never cared much for the "Syd" stuff.
I totally agree. I myself prefer Rodger, Syd Barret.
But nothing could compare to when they were all pitching in, when there wasn't really a "leader" per say. All members had key roles, from "Meddle" to "animals" was the golden age
People who like Roger Waters can't think for themselves and love a good greeting card verbiage. Lyrics without music are called poems. People who like David Gilmour find it hard to produce that sound despite them getting all the required gadgets and electronics. One is a poet the other is a virtuoso. I'd take the latter.
Dumbest thing I've heard all day
FFT3D why can't roger be a virtuoso poet?
One of the most articulate and riveting artists recording in the English language, &, he keeps being interrupted & subjected to annoying efforts to pile drive the entire interview into a specific honing in on his old comrades !
He's so correct about amused to death.the guitar work on that album should also be mentioned with Jeff Beck being brought in by Waters. Becks playing is absolutely surreal at least this album is top 3 behind the wall and dark side(in my opinion)also I might ad a lot better than anything Floyd has done and that's no knock against them.Waters is the creative genius whose work will be appreciated as such in the end
Can't wait for his next album, Amused to death was far better than any Floyd album after Roger left.
He just wanted to do his own thing and I think Amused to death is a beautiful album that deserves more attention than it has gotten. I love all of Rogers work and haven't found a song that I don't like.
if some one was being asked a questions to answer, one has to wait for the respondent to finish his answer. but the person who interview became the one who spoiled the strings of the answers...
COULDN'T THEY HAVE GOT A MORE RESPECTFUL INTERVIEVER-WHAT A PRAT- LOOSE THE TIE MATE
Well it was very nice of you to give us a weather report along with that interview...
I watched the rest of the video, liked the different New Year's celebrations. Was a little surprised (& pleased) to hear Trans Siberian Orchestra's version of "Ode To Joy" being played in Berlin!
One very case where the interviewer is more on the ball than Roger.
That part at 4:38 made me love Roger so much more than I already do.
Really ridiculous. I really do not care about Roger's politics. Frankly, I thoroughly disagree with him on political issues 90% of the time. This interview should have been about one of the most talented men in musical history. Thanks for sharing your art Roger.
This interview is infuriating by times. A genius should not have to explain himself. Thank God he didn't keep quiet when he had brilliant ideas. It's dangerous to tell people like Waters to keep quiet, because it is at society's expense. Sure he was probably horrible to deal with from an ego standpoint for the other lads, but look at what was created. Who would want to alter that outcome? And the interviewer keeps harping on about why Roger changed his views about the band, etc. well, he grew up! That's why he changed.
They never walked away with the name "Pink Floyd" after Waters left the band.
From that point on they became "Brown Floyd".
And unlike the famous line "which one's pink" we didn't have to ask "which one was brown", as it was so clearly the author of such ineffable shite as the "Dogs of War".
you mad bruh?
dnt comment on things u do not understand!!
I agree, Dogs of War was indeed awful and embarrassing - but the rest of MLOR is decent enough - its better than most bands can do, relative to the Floyd's earlier works its rather average....
The thing about Hard Talk was to confront people and it worked fairly well with dictators. But for artists it was a strange format. As many people have said at least Roger gets a chance to express himself, despite some really annoying questions and interruptions.
Finally, though much restrained, Roger is being honest. Great, creative musician, but he let his ego fuck up a great band!
Well, if only the that reporter could stop interrupting Waters. That would be great. Also, cant wait for that new album he was talking about!
Amazingly articulate and intelligent man, whose use of vocabulary makes for really interesting listening.
Amazing interview to a wonderful songwriter, in my opinion the best songwriter in the world. Thanks Roger
Waters was a Vital part of what made The floyd Great. Without Waters- no Floyd-it's the lyrics that was the strength of that band post Syd.
Was the interviewer sweating? 14:34
His Dad would have been extremely proud. 🎶🎤🎸🎹 legend .
This makes me respect Roger so much. I have always admired him but his response to this schmuck interviewer shows so much class.
Amused to death is absolutely the best waters ever made. The only problem is that this album is so deep the essence of life that it's impossible to tell if you don't feel it.
22:30 Did that SOB just ask Roger Waters if he is a has been? What an ars!
Amused to death hasn't received the recognition it should, however imo Roger is wrong Animals is better than Amused. Amused could have been as good as DSOTM but unfortunately it isn't musically as brilliant, Lyrically it is excellent though.
Come on Roger admit it Animals>Amused to death.
Roger's strength was never the music IMO. Pink Floyd was so magical because it was 4 people playing to their strengths and working together. It's no coincidence that as Roger became more dominant, Floyd became less musically complex.
It is amazing how the interviewer uses his critical thinking on tabloid subjects - whether Roger was pissed or not on David and viceversa and whether he admits it - and avoids to let the "political" ones to flow. The human subjects really. He should have used his thinking before choosing such a inhuman career where you can choose that the meaningful to be hidden under the carpet. And he still has a great self-esteem that allow him to put Roger down on such trivial matters, as if the moral issues are with Roger and not with him.Amazing!
I know that is nothing new but it is frustrating to think that he has a so called respected journalistic career but cannot tackle important subjects and only trivialities. As for the Howard Stern interview, I listened it in the same afternon :)....a different approach and I enjoyed it.Stern was not so ruthless in my opinion. It felt like he has a great deal of respect for Roger and Roger liked the interview I think.
The most important part of this is.......20:08.
Roger you were there, then you're ego took back! So sad.
Amused to Death is a masterpiece.
always worth listening to
THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
Roger Waters is so hugely importand in the music, our entire industry today.
A Man who says what needs to be said.
My admiration was big, now it's HUGE.
May God bless him, and keep him amongst us forever.
Thank You for posting.
All props to Roger. Mr. Sackur might have thought of better questions, but a good interview. Looking forward to what Roger does next, and to the American premiere of his opera CA IRA, which IMHO is a pretty solid piece of music. Try it if you haven't heard it yet.
This interviewer have absolutely no respect for Mr. Waters and is so fishing for.. pardon my language.. shit.. I respect disagreeing with him, but to be so hateful towards somebody you interview, you are no longer a professional.. I am sorry. Hardtalk? No.. TheNewsOfTheWorld..
In fact...In a nutshell Roger Waters success came from paying tribute to his Personal experiences..the wall is deep and a little tooo personal . i like Darkside of the moon, and Animals better... Really. Pink Floyd was a gift to humanity.... the band/Entity came. from another dimension people. NOTW
Enjoyed! If you're a fan of psychedelic rock, you may enjoy my original music! Please visit my channel and let me know what you think. Thank you so much!
Typical UA-cam comment; I DONT LIKE THE INTERVIEWER BECAUSE HE IS A DIFFERENT PERSON FROM WHO IS BEING INTERVIEWED AND IS NOT KISSING HIS ASS SUFFICIENTLY
Thanks for uploading. Great to watch. Love the Floyd. :)
roger waters is the most important living english writer, bar none. paul mccartney cant touch him, no one from his generation holds a candle. dark side of the moon, wish you were here, the wall....... nobody from his generatiion or any other generation crafted such beautiful, powerful, important works. the music, the message, the artwork, the lyrics..... untouchable. in their prime, pink floyd made the beatles look like a joke
This is a very fascinating interview for a very multilayered individual with such a complex personality.
Roger, my first and all time favorite concert was when i heard your music in '94. Thank you for your great contribution to man, it's sad to think there will never be music as pleasurable as what you have and helped to create. My only request would be, to think about touring again with the remaining members while there is still TIME.
At the end of the day, after listening to what was left of Pink Floyd, and what Roger did afterword, to a point, Radio KAOS, it's clear that Pink Floyd was a sum of it's parts, and just like Van Halen, breaking it up was a tragedy to those of us that love music. I get when people think that they are the only ones working, that happens to everyone earning a paycheck, but when a band finds that one in a million sound, they need to get over themselves, and understand that it is the sound that every one of the members, including backup singers, that made it all happen, realise that they need to stay as one, to make it happen again. Witness Fleetwood Mac.
Totally agree with him that Amused To Death wasn't given nearly enough attention. That was an incredible album. Personally it's my favorite thing Roger has ever been involved in, including Pink Floyd.
Roger This!
'Rabbi continuely refuses to appear when called,
prove you're not a robot, RABBI 103ST MTA B/C @ 8:04AM.-
Ok after watching 8 minutes I can tell you this guy is a real rockstar but not only that but an Intellectual
I really respect the way he has passion about what he talks and says and is open to value different points of view and also willing to go deep on thoughts and discussions
Thats something you have to value and appreciate
Especially now days when all singers rockbandsartists etc
Are full of shit and ignorant as fuck
Message to Mr. Roger Waters,
Whatever you put out as a solo artist can't be compared to what you did in the 70's. Amused to death is garbage. Dark side of the moon, wish you were here, animals and the wall are and forever will be masterpieces. They will be the highlight of your life. That is all.
One of only a handful of people ,never mind musicians who are really respected by myself for all the best reasons...i.e intelligence, insight and being able to see part of the big-picture. He is very correct about Amused to Death as well, I mean what a cracking piece of work that was/is. He will get the credit...or rather that album will get the attention it deserves in about 10 - 15 years when people awaken enough that they are able to see the incredible relevance/artistry in it.
This program was called hardtalk. Roger was prepared to be interrupted and required to answer difficult and provocative questions. I think the interviewer was very good.
I know the most recent "Wall" tour moved Roger. The story of the American veteran telling Roger that his father would have been proud of him, I'm sure, made much of the tour well-worth the effort.
Greasy spoon
You swoon
June bloom
Yeah, he absolutely has a natural talent for putting words together, what a gifted genius songwriter Roger Waters is.
This interviewer is a real wanker Guvna.
@ 23:50 the bloody weather from 6 months ago.
Wow that's helpful and relevant.
It is foolish of professional media types to ask any surviving members of Floyd about a reunion tour. Rick is dead, if they have not heard.
Regardless of any of Roger's wrong doings in the band the guy is an incredible person and hugely important figure in modern music. There's few like him left, really intelligent bloke.
This interviewer is ... as obtuse as the warden at Shawshank. A "stirer", as RW says. Didn't anybody have a cream pie?
'Amused to Death' is absolutely genius. I prefer it to the Pink Floyd albums and Roger's other solo work.
on the album amused to death I totally agree with what Roger waters says.it is simply a masterpiece.and doesn't get the recognition it should. the album to me makes perfect sense. as the song says. and one more thing again here we go. as he said that old chestnut. regarding antisemitism he tells you regarding the pig in the wall has many symbols. but I believe the first thing out of the interviewer s mouth is about Roger waters being anti Jewish. makes u wonder even after explaining himself the interviewer still tried to continue on the subject. a wonder if anyone else complained about the other symbols on the pig. not that I know of. as I said makes u wonder. can't wait to see what his next and maybe final record will be like. no doubt it will be a bit special. thank goodness for people like Roger waters. peace and love to all.
With what happened in France lately and all the political leaders saying freedom of speech is important : / seems that you can have freedom of speech about some things but not others. Jews and Christianity are out of bounds though
These are two guys about the same age, one in a suit and tie, one in a black t-shirt, who are products of the same era. They lived through the same things, but from much different points of view.
I believe the main reason for the split is these "ideas" Waters had were based around war and the rest of the band didnt want to carry on that theme forever. I agree with Waters Amused to death is a great album but its not up there with the wall or dark side, it could have been if he stayed with floyd, I think Jeff Becks guitar was very good but not as good as Gilmours touch.
Roger is baring his soul here. He is willing to say, "I'm wrong," about many issues. I accept that.
I agree with Roger that "Amused to Death" has never received the plaudits it deserves. It's a great album, and I play it often.
Roger was right, what he said at the end. Amused to Death has never gotten the attention it deserved, and it truly surpassed even some of the great PF albums, IMO. I only wish he had toured with it live.
HE'S so right about "Amused To Death" IMO....which is Rodgers =)
Speaks to the power of music that two people resenting each other can still create magic when playing and creating music with each other.
4 people, my dear.
teppolundgren Thanks. People continue to go after the flashy ones. Richard Wright was the key to the band and so was Nick's timing.
Sure. Let's just say that I'd rather have Roger and David as a duo than Rick and Nick.
Marcus Normark
OK, but we were discussing Pink Floyd.
Pink Floyd was not a duo...
What are you trying to "win" really? "We" were not discussing Pink Floyd, I made a comment about Gilmour and Waters and the fact that they could create magic together despite their differences - and you decided to try and "lecture" me - an avid pink floyd fan for as long as i can remember - for not mentioning nick and richard. Of course nick and rick were important too, nobody said otherwise you dumb shit..
oh who cares about flooding lol remember when there were kids sliding on ice in the lanes and alleyways allover a frozen London until of course around 5:00 when scrooge looking folk burst out of their offices
Fucking intense interview! Roger was a bit crunk on white wine - giving him a soft, yet brilliant edge on the whole thing .. great stuff.
I really like that his dad enlisted but that probably made Roger wierd politically
Merry xmas Roger. If I had to pick pink. I would pick you.
This interviewer really hates Walls, maybe he should try not building them some time!
it is better. A masterpiece. and it hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves. Give it a spin... its jarring
14:51 "You´re such a stirrer!"...Ha Ha Ha!!!..We love you, Roger!!!
he didnt enjoy it! he was put on a seat and GRILLED!!! WTF!
The interviewer guy looks a little like actor Mike Farrell from M*A*S*H
Interview should have been twice as long with those questions, maybe in the past it would have been but with telly in the state its in it never stood a chance.
The interviewer needed to give Roger more room to talk more and shut up and listen.
If it upset you, then it did it's magic. What part of satire, did the interviewer did not understand?
Interviewer was great, he asked the great questions and wasn't afraid to- that's what makes a great interviewer.
Great interview of an all time great rock and roll artist. Thanks for posting.
Cut off yet again when he's about to say something profound 22:20
