  • After 4 years, it finally pays off as a small flock of Cedar waxwings visit my native Serviceberry tree.

Hey Joe, just saw my first cedar waxwings this year as well! Awesome to see them. I learned that flocks of Cedar Waxwings LOVE hanging out in the very tops of Tulip Poplars. I’ll watch 12+ of them hop from tulip tree to tulip tree either sipping the nectar or eating the insects that are. Not sure if you have room for a 100’+ tree but if you do, they seem to be native to Ohio and extremely nature beneficial. Downside is that you can’t see the bird and insects up close like you can with the service berries. Can’t wait for mine to get big enough to fruit

Thanks for the comment. It's funny that you mentioned a tulip poplar, I found one on my property that I didn't plant. A gift from mother nature I guess but I'm letting it grow. Waxwings are beautiful birds that's for sure.

Wow, so cool! I planted about 5 serviceberries, but they are small. I am hoping to get some cedar waxwings one of these days :)

It was a good day. I also got confirmation that our little house wrens have babies....

So cool! I’ve been wanting to see one but no luck yet. I have a small yard so no room for large trees. My local nursery is getting a cultivar called ‘standing ovation’ (serviceberry) which is columnar and supposedly stays about 4 ft wide. Thinking about getting one. Says full sun though and I only have part sun 🤷🏻‍♀️

That sounds great. I've never heard of that cultivar I'll have to look it up. Thanks for the comment and good luck. It took them about 4 years to find mine. I'm going to plant some more.

That is awesome! Like you, I've planted several trees in hopes of getting Cedar Waxwings to pay me a visit. This year I planted my first Serviceberry Tree. It's only about a foot tall, though - got it through mail. It's budded out nicely and has leaves, so maybe it'll take off and do well. By the way, for those interested, check out the Gin Fizz Tree. It is an evergreen that produces berries that the Cedar Waxwings enjoy. It looks much like the Juniper Tree but smaller.

Gin Fizz trees are from Asia so I wouldn't recommend planting this non native juniper. Thanks for the comment.

@@Jem544 Well, it took a little searching, but you're correct. I purchased mine from Proven Winners. Do you think there would be any problems with this non-native?

@@outdoorztime2923 I don't know to be honest. It's hard to know the long term consequences of planting non native species. My own personal choice is to stick with natives as much as possible but that's just me.

Hey love your videos!! I was wondering if you had any rust disease from the eastern red cedars and other junipers in or around the area? And if the birds still eat the berries if they do have rust disease

Hı. Thanks for the comment. I haven't had any rust yet..... hopefully it stays that way.. 😊
