      George Martin remixed this for the North American market for the Nov.23 '64(four days before the dry mix 45 for the UK and Europe)45 and was also issued on the Beatles '65 lp.This mono and a new dedicated stereo mix(unlike the mud mix on the '65 album)will be on the UA Help!all vocal soundtrack in the Capiphone project(if approved by Giles,Paul,Ringo,Yoko and Olivia,Abbey Road,Apple and Universal for issue.

      It's not the stereo version, per se, that's the problem. It's what was done to digitize Beatle albums (and Stones and Hollies and......) I got Beatles 65 for my birthday in1964 and on the family POS suitcase stereo it sounded better than any digital release I've heard since CD's came out. I bought a vinyl version of the album (19th pressing) in the early 2000's and now can play it on high end gear. Wow!

      @@zoomustard Oh, Ok. Elvis is the same thing. They’ve digitized the rich out of the Sun sides especially Baby Let’s Play House. I’m 57 and only bought the British Beatle albums because they were “closer to what the artists’ vision”. Didn’t realize I was missing important B sides. I should have bought the Capital albums to get all the songs. I bought Beatles ‘65 on cassette in 83 to play on my 1st car stereo. Love the mix of Beatles for Sale and Hard Days Night songs. She’s a woman is one of my favorite B-sides. Thank you, brother!

    It's great to have the US versions of these songs back on You Tube. It never ceases to amaze me how much better these versions sound than the stereo versions. By remixing them into stereo, they took the punch and power out of the songs, especially She's A Woman. The stereo version sounds like a reggae song instead of the true Beatles sound in those days.

    • @beyondobscure

    • @peersen-m2e
      @peersen-m2e 8 місяців тому

      The technique of using "echo" in BOTH these Beatles songs is, on one level, like an "instrument" !! 🎙🔉🔊💥 AND, I agree, how the echo adds to the fullness -- as well as accentuating what felt like the coming zeitgeist of popular music, in terms of the coincidental emergence of improved stereophonic recording and reproduction at home, along with transition from black and white to color TV and the evolving sentiments with regards to the persecution of Vietnamese civilians by our military, under LBJ.
      The WILD THING about all this , is that I was THINKING these things BACK THEN, while viewing black and white footage of The Beatles being chased by amorous young females, along with news footage from that seemingly likely unending war in SE Asia!! 💥📺
      I'm no genius for sure. I was just a kid, who happened to pay attention to stuff, just like lots of other kids do. THAT'S OUR JOB: To watch the adults around us and in the news-- and make our own judgements.
      Thank goodness we had the likes of John, Paul, George, Ringo -- and the OTHER GEORGES. George Martin -- and George Carlin, a few years later. THESE GUYS, along with non-commercial, non-profit media, like Pacifica Radio back then, all converged to create the new zeitgeist for our generation coming of age in the 60s and 70s.

    My parents had 2 Beatles albums in the mid-60's. I'm not sure why they had them, because they did not particularly like them. But, the albums were, "Something New" & "Beatles '65". As a 7 year old, this was my introduction to The Beatles. I wore the records out. I knew, even at this young age, that this was something very special. I could not get enough - and now in my 60's, I still can't. These two albums are absolutely sacred to me. As stated in other comments here, the Capitol mix of 'She's a Woman' is the one. The British version intro sounds so one dimensional and plain. But, the Capitol intro sounds like a wall of guitars - absolutely menacing.

    I've always liked how the US mono mix of the I Feel Fine/She's a Woman sounds. However, the fake stereo mix is pretty bad IMO. But that's less to do with the reverb here and more to do with the fact that Capitol's Duophonic process often sounds, at least to my ears, like one is listening to music in a metallic bucket. Like I get why Duophonic was a thing, but man I've never been a fan of it.

    The original I Feel Fine as found on the original Beatles 65 album is the DEFINITIVE version for a number/many of us. Here,
    the 'reverb' or echo in John's voice and in the vocal harmony parts as well as in the instruments is FULL-BODIED. In latter
    offerings of it the engineers apparently felt the need to accent the feedback at the beginning of the song rendering it
    hollow-sounding by comparison. The original version of She's A Woman on the original Beatles 65 album is also better
    and more FULL-BODIED sounding. The original Yes it Is on the original Beatles VI album is also better and more
    FULL-BODIED sounding than what engineers did with it latter.

      @@beyondobscure A lot of people didn't like Dave Dexter, Jr. much, either, as he didn't get or understand rock & roll or British pop. Frank Sinatra had major issues with Dexter, Jr. when he was at Capitol over arrangements and song selection, and caused a split between Sinatra and Dexter, Jr. enough for Frank to form Reprise Records in 1961 so he didn't have to answer to anyone else and he could call his own shots on his own label. Another Capitol executive, Alan Livingston, Jr. had to convince Dexter, Jr. three times in 1963 that The Beatles could be a value to Capitol's assets, and he was right by the end of 1963. Dexter, Jr. (and later engineer and A&R Bill Miller, post 1965) were responsible for the Duophonic fake stereo mixes and the extra reverb added to Beatles songs. When George Martin heard these reverbed mixes & Duophonic fake stereo mixes in 1975 in preparation for reissue and remixing on the "Rock & Roll Music" compilation, he was appalled. He didn't mix them the way Dexter, Jr. did in the UK. Instead he had to remix the whole album to make the stereo on the album more "up to date" for 1975-76. Dexter, Jr. also rejected a lot of British bands like The Animals, The Hollies, The Dave Clark 5, The Swingin' Blue Jeans, Georgie Fame & The Blue Flames, Herman's Hermits, all who were EMI recording artists in the UK; even Freddie & The Dreamers were slipped away to Mercury Records after a couple of hits on Capitol's Tower subsidiary. Other EMI artists like Cliff Richard, Adam Faith, Frank Ifield, and The Shadows were either dropped suddenly by Capitol or ignored completely. This allowed other record labels in the US (MGM, Atco, Vee Jay, Imperial, Epic, Amy, and Hickory Records) to issue the acts that Dexter, Jr. rejected on Capitol. Dexter, Jr. did get to keep Peter & Gordon & Cilla Black on Capitol, and also managed to buy Chad & Jeremy's old Ember masters in 1966 for Capitol reissues.

    For a lot of people It's going to come down to which version you grew up with. I was born in 1975 and my Dad was a huge music fan, Beatles especially. i vividly remember playing the yellow & orange Capitol 45 single on my little turntable as a kid. When I heard the Past Masters CD for the first time I was blown away how different these two songs sounded from the US versions. But over the years I came to prefer the original UK mixes. Not only was it what Martin & the Beatles released, it was also not as clangy and overbearing as the US Dexter "mixes". In 1965, US AM radio loved that echo sound, Spector, Motown & many others used it. It's so extreme which causes the UK version to sound anemic to many. I love the subtle studio 'room' sound on the UK mixes. Both songs sound so tight and punchy. Not like a speaker in a cave...

      @@beyondobscurethat's what I'm wondering. Is it the master tapes or the Capitol mastering that gave it their unique sound? If the Capitol master tapes, which most have never heard, sounds more like the UK masters then of course these records could sound more like the UK releases. Which of course would be a letdown...

    • @beyondobscure
      @beyondobscure  Місяць тому +1

      @@user-zx1ir7jt4c I think it's the master tapes mostly. They're afflicted by generation loss, actually. (Source: Parlogram Auctions) IIRC, the cycle went:
      1. The Beatles' actual master tape
      2. The one copied for use on the UK records
      3. The one sent to L.A. Capitol
      4. The one sent to Scranton Capitol (I'm not sure about this one.)
      The dynamic range checks out and is consistent with generation loss.
      The mastering also did its fair share of things to the sound too, because they noticeably have a different, boomier profile to them, especially Second Album. '65 and Rubber Soul both sound unusually thin with no bass, and Meet The Beatles is actually rather passable, as is Yesterday... And Today. I can't speak for Something New, the film soundtracks, Revolver, or The Early Beatles as I don't own those. The boominess is because of the mono master being a stereo fold-down unless only a mono mix was available (see: singles, revolver tracks on yat, long tall sally tracks)

      A lot of Capitol albums from the 1960's have that big, cavernous echo sound, whether in Full Dimensional Stereo or in bad Duophonic fake stereo. It was to boost up the high fidelity to sound good on large stereo console sets made by RCA, Magnavox, Zenith, Admiral, etc. Dave Dexter, Jr. made sure these stereo songs had reverb for a big sound, since he was a big band and jazz fan from the 1940's. He really didn't like or understood rock & roll or British music. Dexter left in 1965 and was replaced by A&R engineer Bill Miller for more Capitol reverb /echofied stereo sound and yucky "Duophonic" stereo that lasted until 1970.

They cost a dollar more than their mono counterparts, too. In 1965 they had the audacity to change the label to "New! Improved Full Dimensional Stereo", which lasted until 1967. This was a gimmick for stereo fans to buy the albums. It was 100% pure hype. Still, even Full Dimensional Stereo was preferable to "Duophonic-For Stereo Phonographs Only", which was even worse.
