Priscilla Baskerville sang the "Happy Birthday" song to me on my 16th birthday!! She was a student at the high school where my mother taught & my mother asked her to do this!!
Gosh that first note just hit me - and came as surprise after watching the lady conducting an organist who was out of sync with her conducting! I could not believe that a voice like this had gone by unnoticed, so I did some googling and was happy to find out that Baskerville had indeed sang at the MET. This was however almost 15 years prior to the date when this was recorded. One asks oneself what happened in between......
She should have just sang and have someone else conduct. What a voice and what a performance '!Sang this with my choir at Shiloh Baptist in Harlem, and it remains one of my favorites '.
First time I've heard this piece in English. Great soloist and choir. Also, check out the organ accompaniment! There are tremolo parts with 1/32 notes, and groups of 1/16 notes payed as triplets. Not for the faint-hearted!
What's the name of this anthem? I wish there was a CD of the best anthems. I grew up with this sound sitting with my mom in the pew coloring with my crayons! Christ Temple Indianapolis most Sundays always did some type of anthem as a 1st Sunday Morning selection.
Our Sanctury Chior would belt this out with my pastor"s sister in law, Mrs Shirley E Thomas as the directress and soloist and take the roof off the church and when the organ and chior would finish the church would catch on FIRE. You see it was then the church would get happy.
Brava Diva! Next time have a college direct the work so that the audience can get the full effect of your tremendous vocals. You are much to divided mentally concerned with the chorus. They were doing fine. Brava
ummm, ok. so there is Ghetto person conducting AND singing the solo.....then there is THIS........MY GOD she SANGS!!!! its a SHAME ive never heard of her. changed now...
This is amazing. The soprano singing flawlessly and conducting at the same time. I love how the audience jumps to their feet when the piece is done!!
Her name is Priscilla Baskerville, and she's a former Metropolitan Opera soprano.
Clearly! She is not joking around! :-O
Now THAT is singing in The Grand Tradition-effortless, dead-center pitch, steady, beautiful singing. Bravissima Ms. B!
This Lady is singing all she wants to. I feel like Shouting!!!

I now know that the organist is a friend of mine: Elmer Hammond!
Excellent! I prefer the power and richness of the Latin text.
Good job. The organist should follow better the “tempo”
my my my!!!
OMG 😱 TO GOD BE THE GLORY
Yes!

Brava
