I own some land here in Ireland , but would love everyone to have the right to roam as much as possible. Accessing the countryside on foot helps increase knowledge of the natural world and hopefully love of and respect for nature too. A couple of generations ago here with far fewer cars, people in rural areas walked alot and there were many established shortcuts taken across fields taken avoiding longer, twisty road routes. These have now been largely forgotten in younger generations but I feel the countryside should be open to all - largely in line with the Flying volvo comments re Nordic countries in the comment below
Ireland is pretty bad when it comes to right to roam. Farmers have fenced off parts of the Killarney lakes and Galty mountains. There is only right to roam in the national parks which is 1% of the land. There isn’t the same pushback like you get in the UK.
I'm always roaming, when you're respectful to the land your on and respectful to the landowner when approached I've never had any problems. However there are a lot of disrespectful arseholes who get nasty and sometimes violent when approached. There's no law stopping people from introducing themselves and asking the landowner for permission. I've never been told no when I've asked.
You can let anyone on your property, but you shouldnt have the gov force others to let strangers on their property

Right to roam is a ancient right in Nordic countries, and the right to roam importantly comes with responsibilities including leaving the land untouched or in a better state then it was when you entered, not disturbing people and their homes, nor damaging any property including crops, and the right to roam only applies for walking or cycling, not automobiles or caravans nor any other form of transportation that can disturb the environment and wildlife.
The only people who I can imagine being against it would be those with an financial interest in opposing anything that can even remotely be perceived as infringing on private property rights. And if you look who has and continued to own massive amount of land through history you'll find it to be a tiny minority who overwhelmingly doesn't have any plans to develop it, utilize it, or have it be designated as protected wildlife land(since that would again, even remotely be perceived as having any negative impact on "their" land).
It's a right in Scotland. Likewise wild camping.

The only thing I can imagine preventing it would be if there was an overlap between land owners and people who have a significant disproportionate influence on what legislation is considered and passed.

It would work, the guy speaking against it exaggerated most of his talking points. For example 70 million. Suddenly he thinks England feeds the whole of the UK. Scotland is more than self sufficient considering food. The only thing Scotland doesn't produce enough of is bacon/pork, for some strange reason.
He claimed population density is a factor, despite that not being a concern wherever rambling/hill walking was likely to take place. Then he made some ludicrous suggestion that Scotland's agricultural setup is somewhat different to that of England. When in fact you wouldn't know you were crossing into Scotland, from north England, if it wasn't for the plethora of road signs. He can't come out with what England's landowners truly think.

This is true. In my country, Finland, the right to go and walk around anywhere in the countryside is an obvious thing to people, and is also protected by the law. The exceptions to that right are obvious, easy to understand and acceptable to everyone, as mentioned by FlyingVolvo.

1:45 the guy thinks the right to roam means people will be walking across wheat fields damaging the crops or walking through mud pastures stepping on cows dunk and occasionally being chased by mad cows during the calf season. I live in Scotland and I can tell you it's not about damaging farmers fields, property or scaring or stressing out the cows. It's about using the paths, roads and walkways which are already there and vast majority of the times these do not come in direct contact with free roaming livestock and certainly do not lead you to step of crops or newly planted trees. He just says what he has to because he's expected to due to his employment.
Here in the Scottish Borders people do walk in field's if there is no path. Keep to side of field and do not walk through crops. Same goes for if field has animals, keep to side of field and take no dogs.

I live in a state in the USA where 93% of the land is privately owned. I would love to have more opportunities to fish local waterways that are too deep to tread but can't be accessed thanks to private land hoarders.

The people who like going out into the country are going to continue doing so and will continue to treat people with respect. People aren’t magically going to want to head out into fields just because they can.
Exactly, this sounds like it only applies to undeveloped land that isn't in service for farmland, animal herds, mining, golf/sports, or even tended to as a large/manicured garden. If land is truly wild, right to roam sounds perfectly fine to me.

The trespass point is important. We essentially do have the right to roam in the UK but as with pretty much everything else here it’s just stayed in a way that favours the interests of those with land/capital. You can go wherever you like and all the landowner can due is take you to court for any damage caused.
We have internalised the idea of land being privately owned but there is nothing natural about it. We should have the right to roam and should be permitted reasonable access on most land.
I don`t have any knowledge about this political matter, therefore I don`t have any opinion or stand one way or the other. But regarding the territoriality and whether its natural; I think it is natural. We as humans always formed territories and defended them against strangers. The people owning/controlling the land decided whether someone was welcome and allowed to trespass or not. Even animals have territories, and they defend them against any being trespassing within their territory. So I think it is a natural response to have boundaries, to define property and such.
So according to you, people should just be allowed to go wherever they want without suffering any consequences. So would you want me to walk into you're back garden and start building a campsite and having a bombfire?

@@neilbeacher17 Because that is what people will be doing, setting off fireworks, leaving litter everywhere, vandalising people's property, but then they will expect the landowner to clear up whatever mess they leave behind. And if you need proof of that for whatever reason, take a walk into town and have a look for yourself at what the general public does. If they could demonstrate that they could be trusted to behave, but they never have. This is not even about the law, all this comes down to is an entitled generation who has never been told 'no' in their lives finally realising that they can't just do whatever they want, and they can't handle it.
We're a small and densely populated country so we shouldn't let private landowners limit where we can walk even more. The vast majority of people are responsible so it's a non issue

Why is the majority of England poorly utilized farm land.. Half the roads can't fit a car down and the population is living in shoeboxes that you could hear your neighbour whispering through the walls. I've seen fields bigger than the size of a small town with just a couple horses in it.. year on year, nothing changes.

We have the right to roam in Finland, it doesn't hurt anybody, the landowners aren't losing anything on account of it, everybody loves it.
From what I hear from woodland owners is the genuine roamers aren't so much of a problem but it opens the floodgates for everyone to trample the land and sometimes the delicate ecosystems get damaged in the process .
Problems such as mountain bikers racing about , defecation from humans and dogs , litter , out of control fires etc etc etc . People setting a camp up for a night without permission and so on.
One particular complaint I heard was from a Scottish woodland owner who bought his wood to study birds and was very upset when birds nests had been deliberately raided for the eggs and / or idiots destroying nesting sites .
Enjoying responsibly is one thing but at what cost ?

With appropriate boundaries and duty of care to the environment, im sure this can be accommodated.
There's a lower population density and a different type of agriculture.
Stating the obvious is not an argument against the right to roam.

Good luck, as with any of this enforcement of the law and the law are two very different things.
Ownership of the river is irrelevant, you have a right to roam. Ownership of the salmon is separate in Scots law.

Home is personal property. Forest and fields are private property. Personal and private property are two different things. Home and forests & fields are two different things. I live in right to roam country and no one's right to privacy can be broken if the restrictions of right to roam are respected, they definitely are respected.
And I have lived most of my life on a countryside. Come from a long lineage of forest owners, and wood and lumber workers.

just the sheer amount of trash that will get spread all over pristine nature makes me hesitate to find this a good idea. people have very little respect for other peoples property. they will be poaching, disturbing the wild life, dumping their plastic made sheet all over the place. if you are gonna allow this you need to have rangers around also, who make sure that the leave NO trace policies, are stringently enforced and followed.

I feel like I just don’t trust people enough not to litter and spoil nature, there are too many irresponsible people. And travellers will just set up camp on fields.

the right to roam law was one of the first things the new scottish parliament did 20 years ago. however all previous attempts over a century were thwarted by the land owning interests in the house of lords. good luck with that england.

Scotland actually has way less Farmland which is the reason the population is so small because you can only produce so much food on the land. Majority of England is Farmland.
We are all placed on Earth and should have equal rights to it. That said, this should be done respectively in accordance with Nordic tradition

People already get attacked or killed by livestock in England wether there's a footpath or not lets also not forget dogs attack livestock and people damage fences and land.
It's seems very one sided people want to walk in my back yard but you won't like it if i walk in yours.
I'm heavily in support of it, but it has to be done right. Afterall, nobody would want the notion of wanderers freely trespassing in people's small private gardens. There needs to be very careful stipulations to safeguard that.

Honestly, this country should officially be declared as Danger to Life, like they do with storms.
As an avid English roamer, this is a bit of a non-issue. Is there is a track of a path you can walk on it. If a landowner objects, tell him to take you to court. The Scottish right to roam works well there because very large parts of the country are uncultivated highland, meaning you can walk pretty much anywhere without the possibility of damage. In England, roaming in this manner is not really possible, given the presence of fences and crop fields almost everywhere.

How about just respecting other people’s property. There are length of places for people to walk without being invasive of other people’s land. Try asking permission / it is the courteous thing to do
Right to roam is a good concept, if done right. Basically open fields that are not fenced off are free to walk through, but if fenced off, or within close proximity of homestead should be off limits.
There should also be a right to live off the land.

I all for right to roam but I still see idiots with their dogs off lead on farmland where animals are . Always get the it’s only other peoples dogs line when I question them. I would allow roaming where paths exist and open land , moors and such. In short better paths well marked and access to open none farmed areas and national parks.

Most of the land in Britain is privately owned. Unlike the US, which put aside public land for state parks and reserves, Britain doesn't have guaranteed public access to much of the land.
Brits can own river/lake edge or beach. Funny isn't it. Its the only country as far as I'm aware where rich person can own a beach, river/lake edge and there are no buffer zones for natural beauties. LOL😂
Almost ALL land within England and also Scotland is privately owned. We English are scared to talk about this issue with our American cousins because we almost bought America a few years back but the deal fell through and we made you all very annoyed when we killed lots of you during our attempt. Moving on, we're very sorry and now ordinary English citizens are only allowed to walk on 'sidewalks'. Please help us. All good replies, but I'll add that though most land in Scotland is privately owned the people have the full right of access to it and do not need permission; this includes walking, cycling, camping and dogs, if all done responsibly.
@@brettmeikle I know some of the people who own jaw-droppingly large square miles of spectacular moorland in Scotland. They would not hesitate to call out their 'retained' local residents to make sure that you felt extremely vulnerable and unwelcome while you inhabit their land. Naturally, no actual criminal offences will take place. Friendly advice. Just the firm and undeniably certain belief that you ought to leave. Possibly, your enthusiasm for ever returning will end at that point.
