Depending on what the emergency was ,and an analysis of the plane, and transmission from their company, they might have made the decision to fly back to Nigeria, as opposed to Ivory Coast OR Accra. Besides, those planes are filled up with Fuel for long hours, so burining additional 3hrs of fuel will have allowed them to be light enough to land.

Thank God they have not gone so deep through the Atlantic which would have made it harder to land sooner . The flight path is almost 7- 8 hours in the middle of Atlantic Ocean.

Returning to Lagos by passing Ivory coast, Ghana and more was no longer emergency. For taking such a gargantuan risk, by putting all the passengers at risk. The aviation ministry, FAA and more should find out why such a risk?
Am sure they had to burn fuel to be able to land safely. The plane carries a lot of fuel for the long journey which also makes the plane heavy. You need a certain amount of weight to be able to make an emergency landing safely. A couple of days before this happened, there was an issue on the same flight . They were close to Senegal and diverted back to Accra instead of Lagos because they had burned enough fuel for a safe emergency landing

According to the latest update the aircraft may have flown into a thunderstorm and experienced much turbulence.
