Oooh yep my all time favorite merlots are Pomerol wines. But then again I didn't have much other Merlot wines than Pomerol and St-Emilion. Belgians, the Flemish for sure, are famous for their Pomerol and St-Emilion thirst. They age gracefully and are so delicious after some years in the bottle. But again quite expensive too. Great video again. Learned a lot. Keep the wine vibe ongoing please!!!
Lot’s of good stuff coming up on the channel
I tried the 2018 Sequentis which definitely had bold bold chocolate and espresso structure 👍🏻 Dark for my usual palette but the way it evolved in the glass was actually beautiful
ohhh wow, haven't had that one
Cool seeing Rafanelli in the mix. I visited the winery around 2001, it was this neat old barn if I remember correctly. I still have some Cabs from that visit that I really should drink, two bottles of the 1997 Terrace Select, and one 1999 Dry Creek. Hopefully they’ve held together.
Ohhh wow! I love their wines but have yet to visit
Merlot gets a bad rep because, it is a winemakers cheat code. silky, chocolaty and tasty very early. you can literally convert a mediocre wine to a decent one by adding tiny bit of Merlot 😅
There was definitely a movement in California at least to plant a ton of Merlot and many cheap wines ended up thin, watery, or over oaked.
@@drmatthewhorkey yes and there is a strong anti Merlot movement in Bordeaux, many are saying its not a native grape and it has ruined Bordeaux just by how likable and generic wines have become.
@@Ruirspirul Interesting! I haven't heard about this or that's it's not a native grape. Any idea then where it is originally from?
@@rodjacobs3396 there is a lecture/presentation by Loïc Pasquet on youtube, I can link you up but I dont think he mentions where is Merlo from, he just says its not local.
@@rodjacobs3396 ua-cam.com/video/kbw-kaNmwfA/v-deo.html
And here's where I'm a bit different from everyone else it seems. For my own personal taste, I tend to get notes of blueberry with a lot of Merlots. But I never seem to see anyone else ever mention this, just typically cherry/plum. So not sure if my taste is just different from everyone else or what. And also, again here's where being located in my state shows difficulty. Especially with a varietal that there's a bit of a 'stigma' attached. Outside of domestic Merlots, about the only other options I tend to see is Bordeaux. Really hard to get Merlot from any other areas for me to try to talk to the wine distributors here to bring in.
One of my favorite wines of all time was a Walla Walla merlot that tasted like I was drinking a blueberry crumble dessert. It was incredible.
ohhh blueberry crumble??? Delicious!!
It's ok if you pick it up and others don't (I pick up blueberry in Malbec). There are close to 1000 volatile compounds in wine and often people pick up different things.
Good point on Malbec! I get that on Petit Syrah. Also Columbia Valley has some very good Merlot as well 😇🙏🏻
@@drmatthewhorkey Yes, very true. And interesting because I don't think I ever picked up blueberry in a Malbec before. But at least I see one other person getting some blueberry notes out of Merlot. So at least I know it's not only just me lol.
Good timing on this one! My local store just got some 2018/2019 Guidealberto , and when it opens up I smell that green 60% Cab character, but I wanted to pick out what the 40% Merlot brought to it!
Ohh that wine is good in nearly every vintage!
Although difficult to get hold of outside Switzerland, you should try some from Ticino, exclusively Merlots grown in high altitude. If you visit Milano, take the train to Lugano to find some excellent Merlot for around 30-40 €
I've had a lot of Merlots from Ticino actually! I love Swiss wines it's just they are pretty pricey and the best ones are not widely available.
Just recently tasted two lovely 100% Merlots from Lalande De Pomerol (area just outside of Pomerol). Super pretty on the nose with a distinctive violet/rose petal character with lovely ripe red fruit flavours. Definitely worth seeking out for those who want a glimpse of that Pomerol character without breaking the bank. Great video Matthew. Thankyou!
I like that AOC too!!
Just went to Napa and my favorite wine out of all the ones we tasted was a $32 Los Carneros single vineyard Merlot. Beat out all the other way more expensive Cabs. Unbelievably delicious!
Napa Merlot is underrated!
I had a 2009 Vieux Château Certan with Wagyu tournedos last Friday, and it was for sure one of the best food/wine experiences of my life. I have another bottle for later but will try to get even some more, or perhaps later vintages as the 2015 or 2016.
Ohhh nice, I bet that was a helluva combo
By the way I had a 2010 La Barroche Pure with my remaining wagyus yesterday, and it was almost as good, but Merlot rules with tournedos 👍
@@drmatthewhorkey oh yeah 👍👌
Pure is GREATTTT
@@drmatthewhorkey absolutely, and it was well worth cellaring for all this time, as well as a bit of a 'revenge' for Julien Barrot as most (5/6) of my 2007's were somewhat carbonized. The 2009 and 2010 bottles have been flawless.
More and very effective education, and fun! Thanks Doc.
Thank you
Great video. I love Merlot. My favorite regions are st Emilon and Pomerol. Pomerol has become insanely expensive but Lots of great deals Still in st Emilon. I bought Laroque en Primuer 2019. Oustanding wine and very good price for the quality. Only 27$ Per bottle.
That is a helluva price!
Great video that scene from sideways never gets old😂 one of my favorite Merlot comes from Rutherford, Frog’s Leap.
Ahhhh good producer
If there is one thing that I have learned over the years, it is that there are soulful, excellent wines being made all over the world from every grape variety as well as uninspiring plonk from every grape variety. As in most things, sweeping generalizations either pro or con, are rarely accurate.
Very very well said!!
LOL. I was going to post about the Cheval Blanc in Sideways, but you opened with it, lol. Regarding Sideways: Come on Miles, you're favorite should have been a Romanee-Conti. I don't drink a lot of merlot, but had way too many bottles from Newton Vineyards, back in the 90s. Loved them. I do prefer the merlot dominated right bank, especially Clos de l'Oratoire and Canon-La-Gaffeliere. I'm hoping to try Petrus, the Holy Grail of Merlot.
Hahahah I like in the film that it was Cheval Blanc instead of a top Burgundy
Leonetti Merlot from the Walla Walla Valley in Washington State. Concentrated. Seek out.
It is a good wine indeed!
There are only a couple of California Chardonnays that I really like. Most of them, however, use irrigated grapes, which may as well be hydroponically grown. Plus, a lot seem over-oaked. The Chardonnay that I have tried from burgundy seemed to be more balanced. I have had a few Chardonnays from California that I would have guessed were from France if I had not seen the bottle. While I love a good Chardonnay, unless there's a vineyard that I'm familiar with, If I want a white wine, I feel more confident picking out a Reisling from Germany for the same money. Maybe I should start reading some wine publications.
Well you can’t go wrong w German Riesling…
@@drmatthewhorkey I really appreciate how you try to reply to every comment. It makes this channel seem like a community. We're all learning more about wine together.
excellent video! 👍
Thanks!
Funny enough I ordered some 2020s futures of the Ferrand ($34usd per) on Friday because of your recommendation from a previous video, glad to see it here. 👌
What a price!!!
I saw the title and instantly thought you would say merlot 🤣🤣🤣
Niiiiice that you got it!!
I’ve always enjoyed Merlots, before and after the Hollywood Movie that chopped it to its knees. Why would people consider taking wine advice from a movie in the first place is beyond me.
Agreed!
Thanks for this great video! I used to like a lot Vigna l‘Apparita, but unforrunately, prices have skyrocketed there! So I am drinking some secret Pomerols and Saint-Emilions then
Ahhhh nice there is value to be found for sure
Sipping something completely different while watching, a 2018 Schätzel Niersteiner Kabinett from Rheinhessen. First time trying the producer.
You had me at Kabinett…
Another great video sir,
May I ask what somebody would recommend me for a wine that taste like dark fruit berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc. ) and it be fruit forward as in fruity tastes has depth and complexity?
I’d suggest a Petite Sirah, I think it’s a good fit for your descriptors 👍🏼
Good recommendation!! Good Argentine Malbec should do it too
@@drmatthewhorkey
Thanks for the recommendation
Merlot is the Spielberg of grapes. Really proflific, really versatile, with proven greatness...gets some disrespect from some corners, but who cares? If my budget is tight, cheap Merlot and cheap Tempranillo always treat me nice.
Bahahha the Spielberg of grapes… funny one
@@drmatthewhorkey 😂
Excellent as usual Matthew. Thank you. High end Merlot is excellent of course, but they are mostly too pricey for your normal home drinking. Cheap Merlot on the other hand is not so good. You have shown how good Italian wine is and you don't have to break the bank for really good wine. But, I don't have that confidence in picking out good Merlot at lower prices. Italy seems more budget friendly. How do you choose a bottle of Merlot at say the $25 dollar range?
Thanks!! That is tough but I do think a lot of right bank Bordeaux appellations make some delicious wines under $25… again, it’s all about your local store
Female usually prefers merlot over CS.
Merlot from Côtes de Castillon is good to hunt some super value gems :)
There is a good blind tasting video about Castillon on the channel
Exactly! Are there some crappy Merlots sure, but there's also crappy Cabs out there too. I certainly don't have anything against Cab Sauv. But some of my favorite reds are Merlot or Merlot heavy blends.
I agree, they can be so plush.
Believe it or not , here in Brazil we have some good merlot producers ! Hard to keep consistent , because of the weather , that is cold , but too humid. Cheers !
Cheers!! There is an older video on the channel with a Brazilian Syrah actually
@@drmatthewhorkey I will look up! Thanks !!
Nice tasting Good QPR in Fronsac and satellite appellations of St. Emilion and domestically Wash. St. Plenty of good wines for under $30 Need to try more wines from the Adriatic region Thanks
Totally agree... I'm a big fan of all the random appellations on the right bank, even Blaye.
The French consider Merlot to be the most noble variety. Chateau Petrus is one of the most expensive Bordeaux, and is one of the only un-blended Bordeaux--it is 100% Merlot.
American winemakers have always considered Merlot to be a "second class grape" and something to be used to make crappy "grocery store wine". Only in the last decade or so have American winemakers started to treat Merlot like the spectacular grape it is. Argentina also makes some beautiful Merlot.
Hopefully, this trend continues, and American winemakers will start making better Merlot, and it can achieve the same status that Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon have...
And hopefully consumers will want it more again
To be honest I generally favour merlot dominated Bordeaux blends....
Esp for drinking young!
@@drmatthewhorkey Chateau Canon-la-Gaffeliere 2016 - one of my standout experiences...
Rafanelli!! Awesome! Old school dry creek valley. Ridge bottles a merlot from the monte bello vineyard which has some merlot flesh with that singular monte bello structure. Not as great as the grand vin, but a stand out in cali merlot
I agree about the Monte Bello Merlot. That is a geek wine for sure.
Pomerol especially like Certan or Tourmaline great examples…
Ahhhhh nice!!!
Le Colosse from DeLille Cellars (WA state) is exceptional
I'm a big fan of their wines and a few have shown up on the channel!
Pomerol! The Best! Duckhorn Merlot from Napa! 👍
Three Palms Merlot is stellar
@@drmatthewhorkey I'll go try one. Thanks!
FABULOUS words about merlot
💪🍷
C'mon! North Italian Merlot and German Merlot is top notch!
There is a Northern Italian Merlot in this video!
Crazy. I had a 2014 Chateau Nenin that was one of the best wines I ever had. I also had a 2016 Avigionessi merlot which I thought was tart & sour. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The best wine I ever had however was Chateau Figeac. ($400)
Ohhhhhhh Figeac 🤤…
You put the Coravin thru the capsule?
Yeppers!
What i don't understand is why merlot gets a bad rep for being so widely planted but cab sauv doesn't when there's so much crappy cab around. At the same price point Merlots usually outplay cabs for quality, just because it's easier to make a nicer wine from merlot... Might be controversial yet brave here but i'll take a merlot over a cab any day
I think a lot of people feel this way too!
There is a ton of mediocre-to-average merlot out there. But when you’ve had good merlot, it can change your life!
Agreed
Probably because a lot of inexpensive merlot can be so utterly boring and that is the bracket a lot of people buy in. A lot of the time it's all flat plums if you're lucky and at worst it isn't even worth putting in your mouth. It's kind of like the chianti thing... A lot of inexpensive chianti is dreadful and it sullies the name in people's minds.
Agreed, cheap Merlot can be aweful!
Did you bring your xanax?
I say no to drugs, except wine 🤪
I love this channel. Great content. Consistent. What WineKing channel should have been. 🫠
