This is my favourite trick to teach people and now QI has done it! But I'll forgive them since it's QI, and especially because this episode had Sue Perkins and David Mitchell.

It would have been funnier if after she tried to help them and thought they'd got it, all three of them were tied together.
If I recall correctly, it was team-based in the pilot episode, but the idea was scrapped for the series proper. "Team" just refers to which side of Stephen the panelist is sitting.

Ok, how the hell did she do that? I mean I don't want to sound like a idiot, but weren't those two closed loops? How can they have been separated without breaking at least one of them? Can someone please explain? (Though probably quite difficult to do via the medium of comment)

I don't have rope to try, but I think I figured it out. They look like two closed loops, and it's impossible if you treat them as such. But, what she's done is route rope inside of the handcuffs (the actual bit of rope around each wrist). So it's not actually a closed loop, and you can go through the handcuff bit to go from "inside" to "outside" the loop. It looks like a closed loop, but the loop is half human and half rope, and the she moves the rope along the boundary between the two.
