It's ridiculous how good a teacher you are. I'm only 10 minutes into this video and I've already learned more about the actual mechanics of re-harmonization, how you actually pick the chords that "work" over a melody line, than everything I'd ever read or watched up to now. Mind blown. Also, when you hit that Ab7alt at 10:25 I was just... shivers... that chord is literally perfect there. Just wow.

  • @ffggddss
    @ffggddss 6 років тому +4

As you're going through the scale-based triads that will fit with the melody, you get to A , which you point out has a 'rub', with C#-D, but it works anyway.
When you get to C#º, you reject it for the same rub; this is the right conclusion, but I think it's really because there's a double rub; the 2nd one is F#-G. Two strikes, and it's out.
But this is a wonderful technique - try them all out to see how they sound, and accept/reject based on that. It's a tune I'm not familiar with, but it works beautifully for this treatment.
Thanks for showing us the process unfolding; the editing, too, was spot-on, keeping the train of thought on the track...
The rest of what you've shown here will take me a lot longer to digest fully; thanks for this - it's some really good reference material.
I'm just getting more into these more complex sorts of chords, thanks to a recent find on YT of one of my *all-time favorite pieces* - The Planets by Gustav Holst.
(I trust you've run across this fantasically moving work in your lifelong musical excursion; but if you haven't, I highly recommend a listen, some time when you have the time & inclination.)
The audio was a 1945 British recording (full orchestra), and the video was a score of the piece for 2 pianos. (No bouncing ball, so you have to pay close attention if you want to follow it.)
The description had a link to where that score, and others for many other instrumental arrangements were found (IMSLP.org). I got the one for solo piano, and am surprised & delighted at how well it captures the piece, from what I've tried of it so far.
I'm starting with the 1st & last movements (there are 7 altogether) - Mars and Neptune - which, along with Venus, I had experimented with sounding out the first dozen or so bars of, for quite some time.
Anyway, if you should pick up on the piano music for this, I would be really curious to hear your thoughts on it . . .

Wow, Aimee! This is really great. My problem is I'm 62 and out of touch. I had to go to UA-cam to listen to It's Time by Imagine Dragons. You have done an amazing job, but I'm still having trouble connecting the two versions. Was wondering if you could do a reharm for your senior subscribers. Maybe a Motown hit, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, Rolling Stones or a hymn like A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. I have satellite radio in the car and I'm usually listening to Real Jazz or Soul Town and usually don't hear a lot of current stuff. I might not be the only "old geezer" who doesn't know this tune. Just a suggestion/request. Thanks :)

Richard, you lived during the Golden Age of popular music. There is nothing like that today to be "in touch" with.
"A Mighty Fortress" already has one chord per word so I do not think it would benefit from re-harmonization. I would recommend using a simpler 3-chord hymn like "He Hideth My Soul".

16:15 When the melody goes from A to F#, you deftly point out that the F# is kind of a hinge point toward the next chord, so it becomes the E-11. Once I got that, I realized the possibilities are endless.

only a few minutes in, and i note that the first D chord has the second in it...also known as the Steely Dan Mu Major chord (same trick works with a minor chord). Fagen and Beckerused those chords extensively. I guess because the 2nd adds a sense of ambiguity to the chord, and let's face it, the Dan's turnarounds are legendary!

    He Hideth My Soul
    I Need Thee Every Hour
    Wonderful Words of Life
