I must say, I lowkey wanted to change to RE when the patch notes came out but then i saw your video and i decided to keep at it since I already played 20 stack blade before. Now that vykas has been out for a while for us my DB has almost always been on top of the MVP board and I can never get bored of the playstyle still, thank you very much for this amazing video man

If anyone is curious how much of damage nerf it is at 20 stacks for surge 3 deathblade in the west, here is the calculation: The way he's calculating he derives that at surge 3 with 20stack, you cap out at 130% damage, then adds a 1.2x multiplier that comes from surge 3 itself so final calculation is (130 x 1.2) + 100 = 256% Surge Damage. That is how he gets that final value at 20 stacks for surge 3. So you can assume that a 20 stack surge 3, is going to do 256% Surge Damage post nerf Now before nerf ill do the same calculation, surge 3 with 20 stack is 150% damage, then you add 1.2x multiplier that comes from surge 3 itself. So final calculation is (150 x 1.2) + 100 = 280% Surge Damage Pre nerf Total Difference ((256-280)/256) * 100 = -9.375% So with exactly the same set-up of surge 3, we're losing FLAT 9.375% damage on the surge attack itself. And on top of that our playstyle is fucked completely, if you don't stack 20 stacks, and go for 12-14 stack rotation like how they do in Korea, or how you do on bosses with a lot of mechanics. You're looking at more than 20% dmg loss because of that exponential scaling that you can see in the graph. Furthermore, with 12-14 stack rotation we do not even get the full meter back with the usual rotation, which means that we do 20%+ less damage and we have more downtime in regaining orbs when surging with 12-14 stacks. Basically this new discovery that he found is even worse news for us, because of us not being able to linearly use our stacks, now we must stack to the max to reach the top of the exponential scaling curve to do damage with 9.3% dmg loss. And if you cant reach the 16-20 stack counter its a huge damage loss on top of the aforementioned 9.375% TL;DR Far more risk, for -9.375% surge damage reward
Hey man! Just to add something, its capped at 120% bonus surge damage. Following your calculations it would be (120 × 1.2) + 100 which would = 244. Also the 1.2 I assume you mean 20% bonus attack power from the 20 stacks but 20% bonus AP does not mean a 20% damage increase (as you placed it as a 1.2 multiplier). In reality the surge damage is simply 120 cap + 100 = 220. But the number i achieved (over 250) is due to the 20% AP bonus itself. AP scaling can differ from individual due to all of us having different AP so can scale over time as well. But besides your calculations, the idea that you have is correct! Its extremely punishing to not stack up higher and higher now~
May I ask where this +100 come from? i assume is the surge 100% base damage, right? if so, then shouldn't it be also multiplied by the 1.2 modifier? Let's suppose base surge deals 1000 damage. If you have +20% increase atk power, then you'll deal 1200 damage. Now applying addional 120% surge damage it goes to 2640 damage. your equation is not multiplying the base surge dmg, just the additional dmg. It should be like this (100 + 120) x 1.2

This is a video Ive really wanted to see. I vowed would always run surge and never swap even if it gets to the most intensive engraving to play because I genuinely love the play style. I got anxious waiting for such videos and communications because im one who WANTS to do these theory crafts and testings so that I myself can get the feel and adapt to any changes necessary, but as I dont have a 1500 kr account I am a sitting duck. In the meantime I made an almost 1 cycle 20 stack surge build for myself in preperation for legion raids releasing, my playstyle and these nerfs hitting. I love to theory craft and cant wait for west side's release. Thank you for this video!

as for a deathblade main in NA, I'd say I had a similar thought on recovering the last bits of deathorbs but didn't try it out yet. Glad I've found this video! thanks alot dude! much appreciated
4:01 Here is a mistake. The blue line should end up at the same level as the actual % damage, and these two lines do not cross each other. If you calculate the actual % damage with multiplied attack power, the expected damage also needs to be calculated in the same way. So the graph of surge 3 will look pretty much the same shape as surge 1, just with a higher 20 stacks damage.
I mentioned this because people are misunderstanding this graph and spreading arguments like "now you need to do 16 stacks rotations, here is the proof."
Yeah its what I say at 4:10 - 4:22 haha, the graph comparisons are proving why surge 3 is better than surge 1 and showcasing the difference in damage between stacks

Btw for rotation, wouldnt it be better to Windcut first, and then Press Arts? So you get like 3 stacks for free and windcut is off cooldown when u press arts and u can use it again?
Why don't you wind cut into Z into spin cutter into wind cut? This way you move the wind cut to the front of the cycle, stack faster by taking more advantage of the Z CDR, as well as surge attack power buff.
Idk if you got an answer by now, but if you use Windcut first (have it lingering) into Spincutter, you don't get stacks for every hit which means you end up with less stacks overall... just try it ingame and have a look at your stacks when doing it either way. Same will happen with other overlapping skills, that's why you use the long charge up (Blitz Rush) right after windstrike, so you dont overlap
@@thepixlperfect9200 What you're saying is correct, which is why you wait till your first windcut almost runs out before spincutter. Then by the end of your three spins your wind cut is up again so you throw it out there and charge either soul absorber or blitz rush. The biggest benefit of this method is that you have an extra windcut towards the end of your stacking so it can bail you out if you mess up some of your stacks.

Why don't you use the hold-down version of void strike during death stance instead of soul absorber (SA). You can use SA after surge to get 3 death orbs back. If the boss is super jumpy, you can also save maelstrom to use together with SA outside of death trance to gain more orb meter + speed up the animation of SA. You don't need to use earth cleave (EC) in that case (because void strike gives you at least 4 stacks, equal the amount of stacks you get from EC and SA combined), and you can can save EC for counter.
You dont need to use EC anyway if you see my combo hahaha. I dont like the restriction of male so I dont time it and for SA, SA does more dmg than void so its better to use SA in your trance state. Also void gives more orb generation with only tapping the ability. Hope that clarifies!
First best surge guide now this insane great work thank you so much, so these results are with the nerf right ? So if you get your 20 stacks what you always should also before nerf btw the dmg ouput will be the same as before ? ^^
It will still be less but not as bad as PTR. Think of it as before: 150% bonus with +1% AP per stack, now its 120% bonus with +1% AP each stack which resulted in 150% bonus damage here

Not planned at the moment but I will consider it! Crit is probs maxed at 500 + (base crit) in NA/EU right now. But at 1490 (when brelshaza comes out), you can get a bracelet which increases crit by another 100! Bring crit synergies to your party in valtan man hahahha

I did kuku today with 20 stacks and 17 and brelshaza yesterday~ stacks today on stream! Definitely can feel some differences but it is manageable once you know the patterns
Never knew I needed this until you posted it! I started out with Surge due to the lack of wealth runes and since I'm still early T3, I haven't invested into either engraving too heavily. Do you still recommend Surge to Deathblades or do you feel RE is better at this moment?

Hi, I have ambush 3, cursed doll 3 , adrenaline 3 and surge 1 and im 1415 do I need to change my accesories for valtan now? if the nerfs happen on the may patch? Do i have to push for surge 3?
It should be fine since you want to settle on your accessories when theyre relic. Right now you are wearing legendary accessories so its okay to wait for now and keep what you have

As a fellow blade main I salute you for the hours you've spent doing those tests. 2 questions: 1: what runes do you suggest for moonlight sonic and 2 : whats ur opinion on increase mass engraving instead of cursed doll since with purple galewind runes on soul absorber and blitz rush the atck speed isn't horrible?
I recommend cursed doll over mass increase because mass increase slows the usage of the surge skill itself (so boss might turn his back while using) and regarding moonlight sonic, wealth or mana reduction is fine!

I dont think sight focus is the best engraving for surge! If you really wanna run amb, adr, surge and 1 more make it grudge or cursed doll and keep adr or surge at 1. Since ur at 1370, dont worry too much as relic accessories are the long term ones. If you want really specific advice you can see the engravings I recommended at different stages in my indepth surge guide!
@@kimmothy I went with 4x3 adrenaline, cursed, surge, ambush master thinking would be the best combo for the upcomming "nerf", also could counter cursed doll with food buff in raids so more safe for us EU noobs, seems it will work like a charm, do you know how cursed doll's AP buff synergy with the Surge x20 stacks on? Could be worth more than Grudge ?

I watched the video twice and I guess I didnt see whether or not Surge 1 or Surge 3 will end up being the better option? For instance would 3x3 engrave + Surge 1 be better than 2x3 Engrave + Surge 3?
you dont use earth cleaver in your rotation? im pretty sure I can often get two earth cleavers in a single rotation, and its such a good gap closer too... i usually play 20 stack rotation and use death strike with frost zone to build stacks while im charging up both soul absorber and blitz rush... works like a charm.

I always thought it was better to wind cut before surging to gain stacks before hand and put it on cooldown to spin cutter into another wind cut have I been playing wrong?
@@kimmothy Ah alright I am only sitting on lvl 5 gems I am currently running Surge lvl 3 Ambush Master lvl 3 and Adrenaline lvl 3 and I cant put that many spells out that fast for 20 stacks
Very off topic , but can i invest one accessory to swiftness ? I just hate how slow deathblade moves sometimes , and mechanics that u can easily dodge by walking with someone like WD/Scrapper u need to have ur skills ready with deathblade , which if i'm stacking i usually don't .
Going swiftness or spirit absorption (the speed engraving) doesnt really go with surge since ure basically wasting stacks by attacking too fast - other than that u lose %cooldown and %dmg for surge by going for less spec If you want a somewhat faster playstyle maybe consider going remaining energy with super charge (& spirit absorption, its not meta but it works waaay better with re than with surge) - after the kr patch noone rlly goes surge anymore since over there theres just way too many mechanics that make the boss move or invincible (makes it harder to get to 20 stacks) Im not playing on the korean server and its just what i have observed, also as is am not a native speaker pls excuse my bad explaination

Hey can you do disrespect engraving test on deathblade? is it even worth to get it to level 3? I've been using disrespect level 1 the damage scaling is quite noticeable even its only 8% I never saw someone or anyone make a video about this engraving, I'm really curious.
Seems that nobody has answer you yet, but the fact is that you are throwing then a skill which, in first place, your counter, in second place a gap closer, in third place a skill which can apply 2 stacks instantaneusly. Just for the first reason is worth keeping.

Yeah! Its recommended now that you either use z when you have 16-18 (depending on your speciality) or 20 stacks now! It is still a nerf but these stack numbers are ideal now~
1800 crit was for testing purposes so that every surge tested will always crit, if you see the damage cycle section, the surge damage is way higher due to me using my proper combat stats~
Nope. cursed doll, like many engravings, require all 3 points - the negative is always a full value, at least if you're asking what to drop to LVL 1 to increase surge if you ran 3*n +2 + 1 variants. Adrenaline is the most likely candidate sadly, if you're going to drop an engraving to a lower level, as the increase from the engraving is relatively linear between levels.
Engravings with penalties like Grudge and Cursed Doll are only viable at level 3 so no. I'd imagine Adrenaline makes most sense to drop down to level 1 since it's got pretty decent scaling as a lvl 1 engraving

Also for the 16 stack combos at the end, the windcut was still going while your character was in animation for Z, so your Z skill actually hit at 18 stacks. Are you still able to stack to full with 1 void strike/moonlight if you Z at 16 stacks?

So, after I showed the surge 3 graph I said I think this is because of the 1% AP increase per stack. Which is why I also said pre nerf its 150% unaccounting for the 1% each stack. Meaning to say, in reality, the pre nerf was actually more than 150% damage hahaha - hope that makes sense!
Yeah that was like the biggest thing for me , i don't care that much about the dmg nerf , just the orb regen , i want to have the option to release the stacks earlier if i have to because the boss is going to move away etc.
This game already is complicated enough to be able to keep track on the nr of stacks I have when i`m busy to dodge bosses attacks or do some mechanics...Remaining energy build seemed way less stressfull and funnier to me. And from what I saw on yt guides, the dmg output is kinda the same...with Surge being a bit superior when executed perfectly....so why bother?

Mael gives party buff + additional orb gauge from abilites when you are lacking orbs. imo its a really nice utility skill and later in legion raids when bosses move around I dont find the value of death scentence that much haha

This is really disappointing. They made the build weaker AND clunckier to play without giving anything in return. Also surge 3 is mandatory now so some poeple have to change their setups. Feels like the worst kind of nerf they could have done. I love surge but at this point I am very tempted to just stick to remaining energy and turn off my brain while dealing basicly the same dmg as surge.
@@Gh00sTx but it's not mechanicaly difficult. One skill cicle, surge, repeat. It is even fast to execute. Good mobility. I get that it will be hard to land everything in perfection. But isn't like that for most burst classes?
You missing the fact that even if the final SURGE damage is higher, you deliver it less over time because it takes longer to get to 20 stacks than it does to 14 or 16, so essentialy you are delivering less Surges, therefore... thats why your DPS will get lower, even if the Surge numbers are higher. So, you still fall into a more difficult playstile that delivers less damage. Thats a nerf.

Btw for rotation, wouldnt it be better to Windcut first, and then Press Arts? So you get like 3 stacks for free and windcut is off cooldown when u press arts and u can use it again?

Why don't you wind cut into Z into spin cutter into wind cut? This way you move the wind cut to the front of the cycle, stack faster by taking more advantage of the Z CDR, as well as surge attack power buff.
Idk if you got an answer by now, but if you use Windcut first (have it lingering) into Spincutter, you don't get stacks for every hit which means you end up with less stacks overall... just try it ingame and have a look at your stacks when doing it either way.
Same will happen with other overlapping skills, that's why you use the long charge up (Blitz Rush) right after windstrike, so you dont overlap
@@thepixlperfect9200 What you're saying is correct, which is why you wait till your first windcut almost runs out before spincutter. Then by the end of your three spins your wind cut is up again so you throw it out there and charge either soul absorber or blitz rush. The biggest benefit of this method is that you have an extra windcut towards the end of your stacking so it can bail you out if you mess up some of your stacks.

Why don't you use the hold-down version of void strike during death stance instead of soul absorber (SA). You can use SA after surge to get 3 death orbs back. If the boss is super jumpy, you can also save maelstrom to use together with SA outside of death trance to gain more orb meter + speed up the animation of SA. You don't need to use earth cleave (EC) in that case (because void strike gives you at least 4 stacks, equal the amount of stacks you get from EC and SA combined), and you can can save EC for counter.
You dont need to use EC anyway if you see my combo hahaha. I dont like the restriction of male so I dont time it and for SA, SA does more dmg than void so its better to use SA in your trance state. Also void gives more orb generation with only tapping the ability. Hope that clarifies!

First best surge guide now this insane great work thank you so much, so these results are with the nerf right ? So if you get your 20 stacks what you always should also before nerf btw the dmg ouput will be the same as before ? ^^
It will still be less but not as bad as PTR. Think of it as before: 150% bonus with +1% AP per stack, now its 120% bonus with +1% AP each stack which resulted in 150% bonus damage here

Not planned at the moment but I will consider it! Crit is probs maxed at 500 + (base crit) in NA/EU right now. But at 1490 (when brelshaza comes out), you can get a bracelet which increases crit by another 100! Bring crit synergies to your party in valtan man hahahha

I did kuku today with 20 stacks and 17 and brelshaza yesterday~ stacks today on stream! Definitely can feel some differences but it is manageable once you know the patterns

Never knew I needed this until you posted it! I started out with Surge due to the lack of wealth runes and since I'm still early T3, I haven't invested into either engraving too heavily. Do you still recommend Surge to Deathblades or do you feel RE is better at this moment?
Both is fine, but personally, Ill be sticking to surge since they gave some damage back~
if you want to chill with stable dps go RE if u want some sweaty gameplay that rewards you for doing good go for surge

Hi, I have ambush 3, cursed doll 3 , adrenaline 3 and surge 1 and im 1415 do I need to change my accesories for valtan now? if the nerfs happen on the may patch? Do i have to push for surge 3?
It should be fine since you want to settle on your accessories when theyre relic. Right now you are wearing legendary accessories so its okay to wait for now and keep what you have

Yep! Moonlight sonic can be used with either wealth or mana reduction depending on availability

As a fellow blade main I salute you for the hours you've spent doing those tests. 2 questions: 1: what runes do you suggest for moonlight sonic and 2 : whats ur opinion on increase mass engraving instead of cursed doll since with purple galewind runes on soul absorber and blitz rush the atck speed isn't horrible?
I recommend cursed doll over mass increase because mass increase slows the usage of the surge skill itself (so boss might turn his back while using) and regarding moonlight sonic, wealth or mana reduction is fine!

For the current state of the game in NA, which engravings do you recommend going with? I already almost always try to commit to 20 stacks, but is it worth taking Surge3? I just hit 1370 and I’m looking to at least run Ambush3, Adrenaline3, Surge (not sure 1 or 3) and maybe SightFocus 1 or 2. Thanks!
I dont think sight focus is the best engraving for surge! If you really wanna run amb, adr, surge and 1 more make it grudge or cursed doll and keep adr or surge at 1. Since ur at 1370, dont worry too much as relic accessories are the long term ones. If you want really specific advice you can see the engravings I recommended at different stages in my indepth surge guide!
@@kimmothy I went with 4x3 adrenaline, cursed, surge, ambush master thinking would be the best combo for the upcomming "nerf", also could counter cursed doll with food buff in raids so more safe for us EU noobs, seems it will work like a charm, do you know how cursed doll's AP buff synergy with the Surge x20 stacks on?

If they nerf the dmg I don't really care, but if they mess with orb regen after surge and the cooldown resets that come with it, it'd be devastating -.-

Surge 3 will be better to have when you gain relic gear! Keep what you have atm assuming its good enough to clear valtan with~

you dont use earth cleaver in your rotation? im pretty sure I can often get two earth cleavers in a single rotation, and its such a good gap closer too... i usually play 20 stack rotation and use death strike with frost zone to build stacks while im charging up both soul absorber and blitz rush... works like a charm.
Depends on the fight. Most of the time you want to have your counter ready to go

Thanks for the testing! I also noticed that the detail about orb generation per stack was removed - was stated to recover 5% per stack. Is the orb recovery of Surge also exponential?
Im not sure about the exact % orb regeneration but yes it is exponential as well

I always thought it was better to wind cut before surging to gain stacks before hand and put it on cooldown to spin cutter into another wind cut have I been playing wrong?
Its fine but I dont need to do that to gain the stacks I want as shown in the cycle section! Just feels smoother to me

Very off topic , but can i invest one accessory to swiftness ? I just hate how slow deathblade moves sometimes , and mechanics that u can easily dodge by walking with someone like WD/Scrapper u need to have ur skills ready with deathblade , which if i'm stacking i usually don't .
Going swiftness or spirit absorption (the speed engraving) doesnt really go with surge since ure basically wasting stacks by attacking too fast - other than that u lose %cooldown and %dmg for surge by going for less spec
If you want a somewhat faster playstyle maybe consider going remaining energy with super charge (& spirit absorption, its not meta but it works waaay better with re than with surge) - after the kr patch noone rlly goes surge anymore since over there theres just way too many mechanics that make the boss move or invincible (makes it harder to get to 20 stacks)

Why do you moonlight sonic before the maelstrom in the 2nd rotation? does maelstrom not affect moonlight sonic?
maelstrom buffs attack speed which will make moonlight generate less stacks

Hey can you do disrespect engraving test on deathblade? is it even worth to get it to level 3? I've been using disrespect level 1 the damage scaling is quite noticeable even its only 8% I never saw someone or anyone make a video about this engraving, I'm really curious.

Seems that nobody has answer you yet, but the fact is that you are throwing then a skill which, in first place, your counter, in second place a gap closer, in third place a skill which can apply 2 stacks instantaneusly.
Just for the first reason is worth keeping.
What about testing without KBW? Since there's a chance to reduce damage, unless you tested Surge at different stacks multiple times
Yep! Multiple times at all stack ranges and averaged~ I even excluded ones that were affected by the KBW debuff

Yeah! Its recommended now that you either use z when you have 16-18 (depending on your speciality) or 20 stacks now! It is still a nerf but these stack numbers are ideal now~

1800 crit was for testing purposes so that every surge tested will always crit, if you see the damage cycle section, the surge damage is way higher due to me using my proper combat stats~

Nope. cursed doll, like many engravings, require all 3 points - the negative is always a full value, at least if you're asking what to drop to LVL 1 to increase surge if you ran 3*n +2 + 1 variants. Adrenaline is the most likely candidate sadly, if you're going to drop an engraving to a lower level, as the increase from the engraving is relatively linear between levels.
Engravings with penalties like Grudge and Cursed Doll are only viable at level 3 so no. I'd imagine Adrenaline makes most sense to drop down to level 1 since it's got pretty decent scaling as a lvl 1 engraving

Also for the 16 stack combos at the end, the windcut was still going while your character was in animation for Z, so your Z skill actually hit at 18 stacks. Are you still able to stack to full with 1 void strike/moonlight if you Z at 16 stacks?
Hi man! To answer your question, no both graphs (surge 1 and 3) were created after the nerfs. To answer your 2nd question, for me personally its possible due to my spec at 16 stacks

So, after I showed the surge 3 graph I said I think this is because of the 1% AP increase per stack. Which is why I also said pre nerf its 150% unaccounting for the 1% each stack. Meaning to say, in reality, the pre nerf was actually more than 150% damage hahaha - hope that makes sense!

Yeah that was like the biggest thing for me , i don't care that much about the dmg nerf , just the orb regen , i want to have the option to release the stacks earlier if i have to because the boss is going to move away etc.
This was what made surge bearable. 20 stack always is such a pain....
This game already is complicated enough to be able to keep track on the nr of stacks I have when i`m busy to dodge bosses attacks or do some mechanics...Remaining energy build seemed way less stressfull and funnier to me. And from what I saw on yt guides, the dmg output is kinda the same...with Surge being a bit superior when executed perfectly....so why bother?

This would mean that surge 3 got nerf around 20% since pre-nerf it was 150% dmg + 1% each stack of surge(20% at max) which give 170% surge dmg.

Mael gives party buff + additional orb gauge from abilites when you are lacking orbs. imo its a really nice utility skill and later in legion raids when bosses move around I dont find the value of death scentence that much haha

This is really disappointing. They made the build weaker AND clunckier to play without giving anything in return. Also surge 3 is mandatory now so some poeple have to change their setups.

I love surge but at this point I am very tempted to just stick to remaining energy and turn off my brain while dealing basicly the same dmg as surge.

You missing the fact that even if the final SURGE damage is higher, you deliver it less over time because it takes longer to get to 20 stacks than it does to 14 or 16, so essentialy you are delivering less Surges, therefore... thats why your DPS will get lower, even if the Surge numbers are higher. So, you still fall into a more difficult playstile that delivers less damage. Thats a nerf.
