The parallel universe things is actually pretty reasonable given it is a common optimization to store 2D boards in 1D arrays.(If Lua has no AAOOB check, it could just be a consequence of arrays being tightly packed together.)
Though I wouldn't say that it is a very good idea to store the level data in an array.

Sliding Door (X4RX-JLHF) is a level I made during the level editor beta, and has almost the same solution; Mental Confine is still a great puzzle, and even adds an extra twist.
