Deconstructing 'Dynamite' by BTS

  • In this breakdown and song analysis BTS shows us how to GROOVE. Vocals drag behind the beat, funky guitar left and right, a bridge that's as much of a hook as the chorus, and a nice big SURPRISE at the end of the track. Make sure to check out Part 2 where I build a track based on what I heard here when it comes out!

    I love it when actual musicians like you instantly pick up what chords are played. Looks like you have a perfect pitch

      Hey! This is actually something I'm going to talk about in upcoming videos quite a bit. While it might look like perfect pitch, I definitely don't have that! But there is a very real, simple approach any person can take to developing decent relative pitch, by starting to chunk together information to recognize unfamiliar patterns in music. While the details and methodology here are probably too long for a comment, I will say that one of the most important things you can do is to learn the bass line (roots) to any song you are learning. Starting to hear how different notes work against a bass line is the key to starting to recognize how progressions are working and where they are going. It's definitely an ongoing process and I'm still learning every day!

      @@MusicIsAVerb can't wait for the video cause I've never fully understood how my music teacher back in school could easily pick up several chord progressions from just listening

    OMG how do you just know the chords like that. Love the video, I'm aanalysing lots of BTS songs ( since they're are amazing) so I can write my own and your analysis really gave me a bit more insight.

    Wow man, what a great video! Entertaining, educational, emotional and straight to the point. It's one thing to listen to a song and find it kinda "groovy", but getting to know all the means and techniques that make it what it is... priceless. Thank you so much for your work :) It's sad that you can only give one thumb up! All the best for you, looking forward to more cool stuff from you. subscribed!

    how do you know what key the song is in so fast?! thats so cool!

    • @MusicIsAVerb
      @MusicIsAVerb  3 роки тому +19

      Hey! So I'm thinking of everything in relation to the "resting tone" or tonic of the song. When the song starts I sing that note to myself, where I feel that everything comes to rest (in fact, this skill is one of the things that I start as early as possible with my students, because it's the basis for all tonal understanding.) Once I'm hearing that, you'll usually see me hit a random note on my instrument, and then I just relate that note to the resting tone. If the note I hit sounds like "SO" I know I can drop it down to "DO" and find the key, and the same goes for any other note. Victor Wooten talks about this in his book "The Music Lesson" about how any note you could possibly hit either works or a half-step away from working. I use this idea a lot, turning whatever note I play into a random little phrase until it "resolves" to the tonic, or key center. Then once I know what key I'm in, everything can be related/reorganized to that. Sorry for the long-winded answer! It's a tricky thing to describe in words, it's much easier to explain with singing and music!

    This was such an awesome video! Thank-you for your expertise! Would you say the horns are evocative of funk or disco? I'm a horn player and have always wondered. :)

    • @MusicIsAVerb
      @MusicIsAVerb  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks so much for watching! I would definitely agree. Especially when you combine those horns with a four-on-the-floor beat, the particular chord progression they used, and the funky guitar. They are absolutely trying to evoke that 70s funk sound in a modern way!
