Thanks for the feedback! I like having that information for planning out units and potentially kitbashes with other sets. Glad you also found it useful!
Yes, excellent proxies for Lord of the Rings wild men, Chaos Marauders for Warhammer, or basically any fantasy game like Mordheim, Frostgrave, etc. I’m using them as Asklanders in the Ninth Age (kind of like a Chaos Marauder faction), and that’s all beside their obvious, intended use in games like SAGA or Lion Rampant.
Yeah can’t recommend it enough, it’s like the Viking set on steroids. Well worth the wait, and planning on kitbashing to make units of Jomsvikings, Rus, and Varangians.
..a great review of these brilliant figures , ..I've been considering some conversions with the wealth of spare parts from other dark age sets , ..my Rus warriors are well on the way on my painting desk now and this video has given me even more ideas , ...thinking about some Hiberno Norse figures using parts from the Rus and Viking sets , on a couple of torsos on the upcoming Islamic infantry set ? ..
Now we’re talking! Your ideas sound awesome, and I totally agree that the upcoming Islamic kits are going to open up a whole new world of potential with Armour and clothing designs that don’t really exist in the plastic miniature market today. I’m kitbashing the Rus bits with my Victrix Huscarls, Fireforge Russian Infantry, Victrix Normans, and Victrix Saxon Armoured warriors to make the following: a unit of Jomsvikings, a unit of Varangians, a unit of Rus raiders, a unit of Danish Huscarls, and a unit of Vikings. Should be able to pull it all off, and there will be very few repeat bodies in the units as a result of the kit blending.
Great review! Glad to see that there are good amount of dane axes in sprues. No need to buy that huskarl set separately if I want a full unit of dane axe warriors. I also have enough leftover dane axe bits from earlier projects so this kit is all I really need.
Yeah, my thoughts exactly. The clothing in the Huscarls is a little different, but otherwise this is a much stronger kit and the better buy if you’re looking for armoured warriors with Dane Axes.
@@jirga_jirga Yeah they blend so perfectly with the Rus kit that I almost believe they were designed in conjunction with one another (even that the Saxons have things like throwing spears but no Dane axes, and the Rus have the opposite). There’s really only minimal aesthetic differences in the bodies. Mathematically between both boxes you’ll end up with 84 models, 60 of which with mail or better armour. I plan to blend the two boxes to make a big unit of 40 Varangians (all with enclosed helms) and a big unit of 40 Rus, so we’ll see how that goes!
@@Dan-ds8sf need to figure what to do with the remaining models myself. New saga warband could be an option or then I'll mix unarmoured and armoured models and build a 40 strong shieldwall unit for the barrow legion. :)
Awesome video! I would be using them for fantasy skirmish and RPGs. How do they scale with Wargames Atlantic, North Star Military Figures, and Oathmark? Just to name a few! Thanks!
Thanks for the comment! I think these will be excellent for fantasy wargaming. I have a video on scales between Victrix and Wargames Atlantic (among others), however I’m not sure on North Star Military figures. Victrix and WGA are almost identical in size. Oathmark are a little bit smaller but still totally compatible as far as I’m concerned, as the proportions on things like weapons are all still in the same ballpark.
been wanting to get into turnip 28 and have been looking for kits with enough character that posing and such will shine through some heavy grime/fungus, does this seem like a valuable pick up if Im looking to kitbash some basic infantry? I have minimal experience outside of warhammer minis so im kinda out of my depth when it comes to historical minis
Welcome to the world of Historicals! I’m not super familiar with the Turnip28 ruleset, but most of the miniatures I’ve seen for it seem like a blend napoleonics, monsters, and 14th century armour. If that’s accurate, and everyone is armed with guns, you’re probably better of looking at Victrix’s Napoleonic line as a starting point, perhaps with an eye toward their more recent sets which have better proportions. Otherwise, this Rus set is incredibly versatile and I think with a head swap could make generic, barbarian-esque warriors covering a whole range of periods and genres. Let me know if you have specific ideas or questions, I’m happy to walk you through options for a project.
@@Dan-ds8sf good to know good to know, T28 is pretty lax when it comes to that kind of thing, as long as they are Napoleonic or earlier they're fair game, I was thinking of a predominantly melee focused force. The main thing im thinking about is amount/type of armor, I love the versatility the kit seems to have but Id get way more use out of the armored side of things than the unarmored, is there a different medieval-is kit with similar versatility but more consistent armor?
@ Check out my review of Wargames Atlantic’s Foot Knights. Victrix will have their own variant in the new year that I also expect to be excellent. Victrix’s Early Armoured Saxons have some sculpted chest plates, but one of the main features of Dark age figures is that the armour is really diverse. You could also look at Perry’s Foot Knights if you’re looking for heavier plate armour, they have Agincourt and War of the Roses variants that are slightly smaller than Victrix but absolutely fantastic.
Victrix does a really good job with this, from adding a padded hauberk over the mail, to changing the design of the trim (some have triangle edges, etc.), to sleeve length. I could probably make a case that they have a dozen unique chainmail shirts across their dark age sets.
There’s some crossover, but there’s bound to be given that there’s only so many configurations you can make of a dark age human in some form of attack. Having dealt with almost all of their Dark Age kits I’d say there’s more variety here than with their Normans and Late Saxons, especially with some of the poses you can achieve with their two handed weapon arms.
Now that’s a very cool idea, I think the bodies would blend well with the weapon bits from a lot of Wargames Atlantic sci-fi kits. Hang tight though, because Victrix is putting out a medieval Foot Sergeants kit in the new year that will likely also make for cool Feudal 40k conversions.
The unusual hairstyles is fantasy, not history. The braided beards and partly shaved heads is a recent imagination created by a bunch of nerds that were influenced by biker/heavy metal culture. It is not grounded in history.
I guess there is a fine line between “speculative” and “fantasy”. When in doubt, though, I think the rule of cool is always a safe bet when we’re talking about extra, non-mandatory bits for miniatures.
Terrific review. Going into great detail on weapon and head options is really helpful, thank you.

This set also looks good for any fantasy game.

exactly for fantasy, not for historical 😅

I've been looking forward to this! Planning on picking it up soon myself.
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the comment, happy to make it! Looking forward to getting these guys built and painted, as well.
Super pumped, I love that square shield
Yeah I hope they have them available separately in a shield pack some day, they’re really fantastic.
Thanks for this video! Been waiting for these miniatures.
Preach that, this is the longest gap I remember between Victrix announcing a kit and releasing it. They were definitely worth the wait!
Such a great review. Can't wait to get mine, now😊
