- 1st drive in Miranda the Maestro for 4 new tyres from Eden Tyres and Servicing in Swadlincote. I was pleasantly surprised at how quick she is for a 28 year old, tyres are Radar Riviera Pro 2 175/70/14 not the cheapest ditch finders but perfectly acceptable mid range for my run to work etc, £40 a corner.
That 5 speed honda box was fantastic. Non turbo good never less than 50mpg. The turbo must be a great drive.
The sound of that engine brings back memories. My Grandad had several Montegoes, all diesel.
Older diesels definitely sound better to me too.
Nice, a Maestro turbo-diesel Clubman with power steering. Gotta love the old Perkins Prima diesel, a really good engine if they're maintained well. Just be careful if you need to change the glow plugs as they can seize into place and end up taking the threads out of the head when you try to remove them. It can be fixed, my old Montego did the same thing, but it does mean taking the head off and taking it to an engineering shop to be helicoiled. The injector seals can fail too, which will lead to it pumping a cloud of raw diesel out of the engine every time the injector activates, which is annoying and wasteful but, again, an easy fix. The big cloud of black smoke out of the back when you boot them is hilarious, and very useful for dealing with tailgating Audis and BMWs on the motorway as they disappear into the cloud and then decide they don't really want to be behind you any more...
Cheers for that I didn't know, yep the batman smoke screen can be fun
I've worked in the motor trade since 1982 and the number of times I've seen tecies bend sills through placing ramps in the wrong place you would not belive ,it damaged the under body protection and leads to corrosion, and they still do it aghh! Made me think this vid the first diesel I ever drove was a Maestro van back in the day god feeling old. Nice one . Take care.
Yep it's not like I've not seen it before either, luckily all ok underneath.
I bet you were bloody hot in there, I can remember there felt like greenhouses they have a lot of glass no AC another great vid cheers👌👍
Sunroof open and windows down essential 🤣
Yep, can so remember absolutely cooking🌞 in there as a kid in the back of my mums .i think I said before but she love that car 😁
I know haha I remember in the summer my shirt was soaked through with sweat while waiting half an hour at a red light during bridge rebuilding on the only bridge out of town. It's a mobile greenhouse. When they redid the bridge I was rather glad of an ice-cold Volvo XC70 with ventilation that didn't depend on the car moving forwards. I miss my greenhouse on wheels tho, even now I have a BMW E36 I still think the Maestro is a classic. I had the Tickford Turbo which was utterly insane and the turbo scream on that would put a banshee to shame and make the Space Shuttle seem like a Blackpool donkey in terms of acceleration.
I need a maestro in my life, love this car. Underneath looks quite good
Scottish Car Enthusiasts TV I’ll take bids you vs lofty haha.
you have no idea how much I secretly yern after this Maestro. so much so that id part with my beloved 1990 Corolla 1.3 auto (GTi lookalike) to be able o own it !! ;-)
I'm bound to sell it eventually, I get bored really quickly 🤣
@@AgathaAndAnything ooooooooh ! firsty dibs then ! ;-)
That’s a great little car. I’ve got an old school mechanical Ford Maverick, totally different class to yours but love it to bits.
Does seem quite good thus far...
I'm enjoying these videos more and more every day. Best telly in months 😁. POWER!
Haha you're too kind!
Had one of these in British racing green loved it
I think this engine is the reason why a lot of Montego estates and Maestros lasted and stayed on the road.
The Montego estate is a great family load lugger and lots of people really liked it.
I remember often seeing battered Montego Diesel estates with patched and rusted wheelarches and different coloured wings on.
I haven’t seen a petrol Maestro or Montego in many years in the metal.
Check my other videos for the green one I trailered for my friend Simon.
Austin Allegro Agatha Yeah seen it Rick, looked a goodun that, just saying that it’s been a longer length of time since I last saw a petrol Maestro in the metal than it is since I’ve seen a Diesel one. Great vid again mate.👍
They are pokey Diesels. I drove a Monty Estate and when you pressed down with the old right foot the front end lifted and sort of veered (Torque Steer) that noise brings back memories
Certainly shifts well I'm now wondering if the smoke issues are timing related and it's slightly overfueling
The car underside is tidy for its year its running well nice and smooth engine
Looks like it was under sealed years ago, engine seems good.
I did a bit of reminding myself about that fuel pump. It's the lifter and works off of the valve came. It makes fitting a fuel filter easy. I forgot to tighten the bolts ( or a garage ) . The lifter was hanging on by it's last threads and not in contact. Fuel was flowing due to suction alone. To service this car was a joy. My VW a pain. I think my VW wants to kill me when I do. I have bought an oil change pump as it's too tricky. I used Castro GTX after a chat with them on this engine ( TDi 300 also, Discovery ). VW wouldn't take that. Perkins needs. 12 000 mile big service and 6000 oil change. 67MPG in France once on awful French cheap diesel. I did more than 250 000 miles on two cars ( F38 KWL was stolen ). Not once did they brakedown. Handling on even Runway tyres was better than my Golf. The Golf is great, the BL better. It felt safer.
I could be very jealous. Great engine which is easy to work on. Rust as ever is why not. 60 MPG if careful on A roads. 47 MPG ( UK ) is worse you should ever get. It even runs when the fuel pump falls off ! Montego Countryman is a useful version. Better handling than petrol version.
Sold it now but you’re right, great mpg!
Further. Get a sump guard they are low at front, very easy to smack the sump. I did sump once and smacked oil filter second time.
Sold it ages ago 👍
Nice torquey engine. It sounds like a 4 cylinder version of the 1.4TDi in my A2.
Trim rattles? Standard Maestro feature! Sounds really healthy - well bought!
If it rattles it hasn't fallen off.....
@@AgathaAndAnything yet!
I had a 1.3 then a 1.6 R series. Always wanted a diesel but never got round to it. Seems quite lively !
certainly for an old design she is very sprightly and fuel efficient, turbo whistle is fun too.
Looks like a pretty good one. Sump looked a bit dented? Otherwise, quite clean.
Yeah my mrs said it looked dented too, must look at it again myself
Are you going to do an Allegro 2 vs Maestro comparison video?
Sounds like a plan... just need to get the allegro running ok, still waiting on parts.. .
@nick ding for some reason i can't reply to your comment, i get this a lot it must be your settings, if you see this of course you can have a look at the cars.
I once jacked up one of my cars on the sill. Big costly mistake and had to have it welded.
Luckily this is ok
Should be pretty good on the diesel , would imagine mid 40 mpg , looks straight underneath as well.
Yep I'd expect at least 45mpg.
Please please fix the roof lining I beg u as a petrol head especially a classic such a beautiful car tho that’s only fault I can pick with it 🥺
You’re a few videos behind 😂 sold the car....
@@AgathaAndAnything oh dead and yeah I’m one of them old to new vids not new to old 🤣
Would you recommend these as a first car? I've heard they are pretty cheap to run but not sure of anything more than that
Yep 55mpg out of a diesel just finding a good one with no rust and they’re not cheap
@@AgathaAndAnything thank you!
That looked like a 505 just before the little Tesco express..
Still prefer the Maestro though..
Yeah a big old Peugeot estate, I think 504?
@@AgathaAndAnything
It was the front I thought I recognized..
Hubnut and Furious Driving have reviewed two different estates recently..
I didn't realize it was Burton you were based.
I've spent many a happy weekend visiting friends and my head office there..
Hola cómo puedo conseguir puedas para ese carro tengo uno y no quiero dejarlo perder me gusta ese carro

Ah the days when diesel was £1.04. thanks Putin 🖕
Yep crazy times!
