    This is exactly what I thought was the best way. Everyone drills too fast, whatever the material. Nice and slow always makes for a cleaner straighter hole

    Thanks for the vid. I follow your advice and got a perfect hole in a half inch Ferro Rod without any issues.

    Nicely done man. I've always just let the sparks fly but you go through bits pretty fast that way. Thanks man, I'll slow my drill press down next time. Thanks!

    Great job! I have only drilled one ferro rod and it was a hard 1/2". I actually used a drill press and an 1/8" titanium bit at 650 RPM and of course it wanted to spark a lot. I just kept a drop of water in the hole from a squirt bottle and it did not spark a bit.

    I've drilled plenty of different ferro rods without any issues. Yeah the first one I did there were sparks but after that learning experience I just go slow through them and never have any problems with ignition. Great video buddy!

    Very practical video front to back, esp. for anyone newer to all the BushCraft stuff like me. Thanks again for helping my nephew Chris out and all that you do sir. Sincerely one of the other Canadians LOL. (: I subbed your channel too, everyone says you were "gone" and IDK what happened but I only started all this around July. Glad you are back.

    Great video, I've missed you Larry, tv is pretty much crap, so you and a lot of these great people on you tube are my source of entertainment, glad to see you doing good, also great tip, I always though the ferro rod would crack, but now I may try it.

    when this video first started (sorry didnt get to see the first) i thought well he is keeping the drill speed down thats why it isnt sparking said so to my friend and she asked how can i tell and thats when it hit me if you dont use power tools a lot you could miss that well anyway nice job on this video glad your back i missed your down to earth ways keep it up

    • @LarryRobertsbc
      @LarryRobertsbc  8 років тому

      +ED MaCallum I should have said that, but I forgot too. Once when it sparked I mentioned it, but your right I should have made it more clear.

  • @frankc6430
    @frankc6430 7 років тому

    also people try to go faster because they are using a dull drill bit and don`t get deep enough ...faster does not mean drill will necessarily make the hole faster if the bit is not sharp,it only creates more friction ... use a nice sharp bit and won`t need to speed up!... cool video.

    • @LarryRobertsbc
      @LarryRobertsbc  7 років тому

      Yep, you need a sharp bit for sure. Thanks!

    • @kennethmccluskey4688

      Possibly something along the lines of a stranded or injured fisherman would be good.

    • @LarryRobertsbc
      @LarryRobertsbc  8 років тому

      Kenneth McCluskey Ocean or inland? I can't do ocean. Why a fisherman? What does he have to overcome another type of person doesn't? I'm not being rude, I need to ask this stuff for good ideas.

    • @kennethmccluskey4688
      @kennethmccluskey4688 8 років тому

      +Larry Roberts I figured since y'all did a lost hunter scenario, maybe an injured trout fisherman with just typical things they would carry might be good. wouldn't have to be a trout fisher, but there is always hazards of leg injuries on a trout stream. I didn't think you were being rude at all. Very legit question.

    I was wondering if there would be a difference in drilling hard and soft rods. Thanks again for the video. FYI three below isn't a little chilly. Here in southeast Texas it is a little chilly (55 degrees). Hmmm all this chilly talk has made me hungry for some chili, think I'll go make some.

    • @LarryRobertsbc
      @LarryRobertsbc  8 років тому

      +dg davis It's all relative I suppose. lol I thought there would be a lot of difference in the sparks between the hard and soft ones, but I hardly noticed. The softer one made larger shavings and was easier to drill, but that was about it.

    Nice video! I have two 6" ferro rods with holes. Would like to cut them in half to have four 3" rods and drill holes in the remaining halves. Got any tips on cutting a ½" ferro rod in half without setting the place on fire?

    • @LarryRobertsbc
      @LarryRobertsbc  5 років тому +2

      Just keep going slow with a hack saw. Take your time and clean up the dust (and save the dust).

    Do you use the hammer drill function or regular setting?

    • @LarryRobertsbc
      @LarryRobertsbc  4 роки тому

      Just the regular setting

    • @us24575
      @us24575 4 роки тому

      @@LarryRobertsbc Not sure why but it's not drilling the ferro rod; using the steel bit, tried regular and hammer and it only made small dent in rod.

    • @LarryRobertsbc
      @LarryRobertsbc  4 роки тому

      Maybe your drill bit is dull? The ferro rod is softer than steel or iron, so it should work.
