Today we look at the Tough Built Reload Utility Knife TB-H4S2-03 It's cool, I like, what more can I say. Other stuff and contact Info direct.me/funk_fpv
Your sincerity and honesty adds a lot of value to your videos. Admitting you liked something for the "coolness' factor is far more honest than making up some other practical reason to justify the purchase. We all have seen friends twist themselves into pretzels to justify purchasing an item. Sometimes the fact that it looked cool, and you want it, should be reason enough.
This is a bosses nightmare. There will be an entire week's worth of work wasted by everyone playing with the new knife, then a week of the knifes owner having to borrow a knife because his broke during a tacitcool reload.
I bought one about about 6 months ago for the exact same reasons. My boss yelled at me for playing with it all day... but then he liked it so much he got one too😂
I have one of these, also because it's cool and fun... It's actually a pretty solid tool. EXCEPT for one major flaw. This flaw exists for every quick change utility knife I have ever used. The blades are not retained well enough to do serious pull cutting. If you are pull cutting through drywall for example... when the blades bind/stick in the material the blades can pull out of the tool.
Have you had this issue with milwaukee's fastback? It's been my go-to for everything HVAC, and I've pulled it through some pretty nasty old farm-house caulk jobs.
I have to say that a month ago I bought this same blade because of the coolness factor. Once I unpacked it and played around with it for a bit, I was very satisfied with my unnecessary purchase. I already have 4 other nice utility knives, but this has now become my favorite.
Although I’m a carpenter I don’t really care that much about most of the tools old funky reviews, but I watch anyway cos he just comes across as an honest decent guy doesn’t he. The type of bloke you’d get on with at work. Cheers and keep it up 👍
I'm totally getting this so I can Wick all the boxes at work when they come in. Then drop the mag and insert a new one. And take out 2 boxes around the corner.
It’s one of those products that serves no real purpose other than it’s freakin cool. I mean yeah it’s useful as a knife but there are a lot cheaper quality products.
Definitely marketed to stay at home wives. I remember the good old days when I had to use a screw driver to open up the utility knife to split it in half and you could hear the extra blades rattle around in it. We were happy when they added that little curl over metal above the blade to prevent it from splitting through.
@@chriscasperson5927 Yes we actually had basic hand tools unlike a home owner. But in a pinch we didn't go breaking a dollar to open our knives, we used electrical box knockouts.
@@slickydickyAnd in the heat coming back. Rubber on the bottom of our Depression shoes would melt halfway home and Ma would throw it in the family pot on the neighborhood stove to melt em back into shape. Kids don't know what they got.
"Cooler tools than I need" is a great way to introduce some fun and flexibility into your work. Who knows, the extra capability provided by higher end tools might help you identify and/or solve a problem faster than more basic tools. When my budget can accommodate it, I often opt for tools that are more capable than whatever I barely need to complete a job. The extra investment has usually paid for itself on a later project.
Hey Funk I am a newbie beginner maintenance guy for a local pharmacy (I mainly deal in repairing assisted walking equipment and O2 machines) and I was wondering if you’d do a video on everything you carry in your pockets and on your hip. (The most recent short I made is my stuff if you want to go review it just don’t drag me through the mud haha I’m new)
Everyday carry is always a good topic even if it’s often job specific. For instance, not many people carry scissors in a belt holster but it was common where I last worked before I retired, at a place that made plastic netting and film products.
We've come a long way from using a screwdriver to open the knife and change blades! I was always looking for a quick change knife, but now that I'm retired, my knife just sits in the tool bag, next to the other tools I used every day, but now never see them! Not complaining though!
I saw that knife at Lowe's and resisted the urge to get it thinking it was a gimmick. Now that you have reviewed it I now have to go buy one for myself. Have a wonderful day and thank you for the videos. ☺️
Those hook blades are intended for roofing shingles, but I have also used them for removing staples - both from roof paper and house wrap, and also from upholstery. Of course, they're also good for opening packages, particularly if what's in the package is delicate.
@@chrisjones6002 Yes, and upholstery too. Basically anything where you don't want the sharp part of the blade contacting whatever is under the thing you're cutting.
Love your long and short vids. Especially the raw video... goofs included style. I have dozens of ToughBuilt tools and pouches. I love their clip-tech pouch attachment feature. Keep up the "There you go!"
I use a utility knife constantly. I don't like knives with little extra parts that can wear out that you can't replace. I stumbled onto Lutz # 357. No tools needed to replace standard blade. Pull out and turn the end cap 90 degrees. Only thing is if you use the end like a hammer it can break. It's not indestructible but close. Most reliable knife I ever had.
I bought one of these several weeks ago at it's basically the fidget spinner of utility knives. Loading and unloading the "mags", loading blades into the mag like rounds, and even sheathing and revealing the blade sounds like racking a round if you do it fast enough.
“I dont need the holster” YA DIDNT NEED THE KNIFE BUT THE HOLSTER PROBABLY WILL JUST GET YOU IN TROUBLE, I know it would be that way for me. Haha. Blessings
I bought that like 2 years ago for the exact same reason 🤣 and I maybe used it 5 times at work but it always makes me smile. I might get their rolling tool box for Christmas. I made the mistake of getting the 1st gen of rigids and now one of the telescoping handle things is now Bluetooth 🤣 toughbuilts looks well.. tough lol. Love your videos bud keep'er coming 👍
I love the idea of it. I, like you, saw it at Lowes and being a fellow gadget need, I was like what the hell. As far as utility knives go, it isn't any wider than say the Stanley Fat Max. But if you are used to using the folding style knives with the pocket clip it will feel big in the hand. Wishful thinking, I wish the blade change feature could be used with any standard utility knife. I tried using standard blades that didn't have the hole in the middle and it didn't work. So you have to use the their blades.
I used the old Stanley with the screw, for cutting drywall for forty plus years. It was the right size for holding the tape end to blade. Used a small sharpening stone to sharpen, could use one blade all day👍
Rolson Tools makes a nice reloadable utility Knife. It has a side hatch that you load all the blades in for auto pickup of the next blade. I use the side hatch as a sharps bin for the warn out blades and cycle through them. I only wear out one side of the first blade, then put it back on top . When I do a blade change and a blunt blade comes out, I know I've used the entire set and flip the blade round for the last use.
I'm sure someone said this already but hook blades are used a lot for cutting roofing shingles. Since it hooks it cuts from the back and thus avoids dulling itself on the grit embedded on the top of the shingle.
Alright. You guys ready for this? I stumbled across one of these in the store and bought it because I saw it in this review. My verdict? Yo this thing is solid and bad ass. 10/10
I know this is 7 months later but I figured I'll share this if you're here and you like this utility knife. Lowes have them on sale/clearance for $4.92. YMMV (Can't say that every Lowes will have them at this price), so you might want to check their app or online, set to the store/s near your location so you can check for price and availability before making the trip. I ordered 2 today, one was via buy online/app pick up in store (took 10 minutes from the time I placed the order to be ready to pick up in their locker) and once I saw that it looked cool, bought another at the store. I wanted to buy 10-20 (or maybe even more lol) of them for the looks and the price atm but I was able to hold myself back. The store I went to has like 50+ of them in the clearance section.
Long time viewer, first time I have something useful to contribute to the community. Give Iriwn Bi Metal blades a try (I do not work for or know anyone that does work for Irwin, and nor am I a "fanboi"), years ago I was re grouting a double shower, had removed most of the grout with a Dremel and was raking out what remained with a utility knife and had a couple of Dewalt blades shatter on me quite quickly so bought some Bi Metals blades and been using them ever since with no breakages.
started a new property project recently, and over the years its become tradition to buy a new Stanley knife for each one, then this video pops up and the 7 year old in me ( i am 36) is chanting "get it, get it, get it" so already looked and toolstation in the UK seems to sell them over here (i live in Scotland). so yeah, probably buy one on monday just for the magazine reload lol (it will go well with my daftness that my friends are already use too lol)
I’ve always hated utility knives because I carry multiple blades on me every day. That being said! That is kind of cool. And you’re 100% right on the 22 mag comparison.
Tough Built are the only people revolutionizing utility knives. I have the scraper one. It's a little chunky so the scrape can't go really flat, but it works. Used it for scraping paper and some got lodged in the mechanism jamming the blade holder so it wouldn't hold the blade. Tried to disassemble to clean and failed. Bought another. Doesn't have a safety catch for the slider mechanism either, wouldn't just have this just chilling in my pocket because it would slide open and slice you up.
Toughbuilt makes the best knives. They have one that flips from knife to scraper and back again with the button. Super rad for cleaning glass an other surfaces as its not only the best and sturdiest scraper, but also a knife to cut tape and edges. Its dope, you should get ;)
So I’ve been using that particular knife for a couple months now my only complaint is it is a litter thicker than I’d like they do make thinner ones now
I had a snap-on one i lost years ago and got this to use on the fire department for cutting panels and roofline of cars and easily changing blades with dense gloves on. Problem is however I've grown to like this so much I use it around the house and when doing tasks for others instead. I'm not a professional by any means but for a hobbyist and home user it works good. Although the tips of the blade normal razor blade is fragile on the default blades compared to some others I've gotten. And 80% of the reason i got it is because it's cool and I won't deny that.
The biggest problem I find with modern utility knives is comfort. They look cool and and they are tactical but if you actually have to use them for long periods of time they suck. Sheffield wood and stainless is the way to go
the classic model of the german-made Delfin is pretty hefty being almost all aluminium but quite nice ergonomically speaking. there's even more modern versions of it available. check lee valley for the original ones as chinese junk copycats abound. 😉
I think the flippy one was a great idea, if only they could find a way to use standard blade. This one however seems amazing for those that change blades alot. For me the standard Carbide are the best and all I end up using. Worth the extra in sharpness and life for my uses.
This wonderfully unique cool product reminds me of the time I impulsively purchased a single shot revolver knife made by Smith & Wesson from the outdoor department section at a Walmart located in (don't ask me why) but in Picayune Mississippi in 2017, kept preemptively at the ready within my vehicle for its seatbelt cutter feature along with an additional feature of an emergency glass breaker at the end with the blade closed to somewhat protect the user from the main exclusive function of the not so sharp but still heavy blade... or also remembering what Boris the Bullet dodger said to Tommy when he sold him his first gun, ...
Hey Wes...the only flaw I see is that you only use half the blade unless you save the ejected blade and reload them with the other sharp end going forward .
@@FunkFPVI kinda disagree. It is exactly the point of the quick change blade. Press the button, quickly pull the blade out, flip it around, and put it back in. Next time, toss it. If you're diffusing a bomb and don't have an extra 0.5 second to spare, sure... pull the blade and throw it across the room while deploying a fresh one from the mag. 👌
Lennox made a toolless blade changer razor knife with the features of your Tough built less the blade magazine. It has long been my favorite knife. Their blades were absolutely top notch as well. They were fatter than many knives and ergonomically curved making them ideal for my mitt. I gifted several and only kept 3 for myself not knowing that Lennox would discontinue the model. They are utility knives and can't be expected to last forever. A latch catch broke on one knife so the hinges side door won't stay closed. I love this knife so much that I keep it closed with electrical tape. I have seen knockoff versions of the Lennox, but of inferior quality. The Tough built is gimmicky, but I might try it, though I expect that I will lose or misplace the spare magazine. The open slide handle feature is a drawback to me. I really like the Lennox smooth and gentle curved contours. The Lennox is too fat for comfortable everyday pocket carry, but it is ideal for electrician and drywall work. It is fat enough to find in a crowded hip pocket and the fat handle affords excellent purchase on deep and difficult cuts. Lennox should bring the tool back!
I hqve their 2.5lbs (or 3lb?) blacksmith sledgehammer, i love it. Even people ar my job said it feels nice. I do bodywork/fabrication so the wedge end is great for hammering in radius' into sheet metal on the tabletop vise. Close/open the vise based on how tight or wide i meed and does the job.
I’ve been using the same kind of “reloading” utility knife for years. I first found it at Home Depot & it was made by Husky. Very similar to the one in the video, except it’s a lot smaller & not as “girthy” lol. It does carry 5 extra blades in the handle. I got a new one recently, it’s exactly the same, but it’s no longer “Husky” brand. It’s labeled as the: ‘Autoload’ by Olympia Tools
I only use the folding pocket utility knives. Push button quick release knives all suck. Old school utility knives are bulky. I use hook blades a lot for roofing and keep a knife in my pouches with a hook blade in it. I also keep a little 5 blade refill in my pouches for the standard blades. These knives are just more convenient, I carry one every day. And if I go somewhere that no knives are allowed it's nearly always acceptable to just throw the blade away instead of taking the knife all the way back to the vehicle. I've done this at amusement parks, sporting events, and a courthouse. I carry a knife out of habit, when I wake up in the morning it clips on my pocket. The funny thing is that modern "weapon detectors" don't pick up on them.
lol, same, bought a foldable one from Ironside. It's quite handy, looks quite cool as well. (Well, to me at least😅) It's way more compact, so also easier to carry around. So myeah, kinda more than just a toy tbh.
Bought this model (or something very like it - didnt come with the hook blades) a few months ago in Australia (Bunnings). Works well. The blade release i can never figure out the first time. Using the other half of the blade can be done by releasing and re-inserting them, bit fiddly though. I do wish it could retain the old blades, so you dont have to find somewhere to dispose of sharps. The mag release doesnt shoot me in the nuts though, so thats a plus.
Oooh I have one of these (I’m in the UK, had it since March). It was bought for the exact same reason… it’s cool. I got the holster- the knife doesn’t fit as it’s too fat 😩 I mostly use the Stanley 0-10-18 with bimetallic soft-snap blades most of the time.

„wether or not I need it, I don’t care“ that describes toughbuilt perfectly
I used to work resin extrusion and the ability to quickly swap from a straight to hooked blade was awesome to have
Sure. But the mag is basically the same size as a full knife... so really, if you need two blade styles, you probably just have two knives.
@@bobsmith5088yup. The quick change is pretty neat tho
@bobsmith5088 the mags have option selects at the bottom, so you can theoretically put 3 blade styles in the same mag and switch them whenever.

I will say the hook works great for skinning a deer. Definitely a cool tool setup.
I've always used the hook blade for cutting shingles
That's pretty cool 😎
Damn it. Now i got to go get me one. Thats cool
I use the hook style blades for roofing quite a bit.
I'm a roofer, those hook blades are for cutting shingles as well.
Hey Wes...the only flaw I see is that you only use half the blade unless you save the ejected blade and reload them with the other sharp end going forward .
You can just flip the blade around and stick it back in... The same as every other utility knife with a quick change blade system.
This is true. You can just reload it the other way but that beat the point of quick the change.
Very cool.
Good video!
I bought a Milwaukee fastback like 2 weeks and it's the best utility knife I own
I hqve their 2.5lbs (or 3lb?) blacksmith sledgehammer, i love it. Even people ar my job said it feels nice. I do bodywork/fabrication so the wedge end is great for hammering in radius' into sheet metal on the tabletop vise. Close/open the vise based on how tight or wide i meed and does the job.
Great for carpet installation in a big house
I need one immediately
Cool s***. i'd never buy one but it is really nice looking. I'll use my standard.
Xcellent video as youz!
It’s labeled as the:
‘Autoload’ by Olympia Tools
I love my milwaukee fastback knife
Here in England, it's already on Amazon.
Of course you need the holster!
If anything it'll be one hellava conversation piece 😄👍
BRAND NEW FUNKSCRIBER!!!😂
Every time I use it if someone is standing by, I say, “check this out“ 😂
Hey, you are that funny guy on the shorts. Well done, baby.
We are all children when it comes to tools 😂 thx for the video
The funny thing is that modern "weapon detectors" don't pick up on them.
hook blads are a roofers dream
Quickly becoming one of my favorite youTURDERS
lol, same, bought a foldable one from Ironside.
It's quite handy, looks quite cool as well.
(Well, to me at least😅)
It's way more compact,
so also easier to carry around.
So myeah, kinda more than just a toy tbh.
Toughbilt does make some kinda gimmicky stuff but they're pretty cool gimmicks and they make them pretty well
The last thing I need is another utility knife. My go to is the Olfa with the strip of break off blades. That being said I am ordering 3 of these.
😜😜
Im a computer guy, only tools I have are some small screwdrivers. Still enjoy the content non meme content. Good shit man.
Oooh I have one of these (I’m in the UK, had it since March). It was bought for the exact same reason… it’s cool.
I got the holster- the knife doesn’t fit as it’s too fat 😩
I mostly use the Stanley 0-10-18 with bimetallic soft-snap blades most of the time.
Got the toughbuilt fast release knife only because it was the only fast release knife with blade storage. I still miss my Milwaukee fastback though
