    A couple of interesting things:
    The raised areas of a helmet were usually separate pieces. This was because the limited forging technologies of the time and the fact that they couldn't produce large pieces of worked metals. Instead they would make the helmet (and other armor pieces) of several smaller plates which were riveted together. A fairly well known example of this is the Scandinavian/Viking "goggle" types helms.
    Breast and back plate designs vary based on the region and materials. Most of the suits you see which mirror male physiology were made primarily from boiled leather and actually form fitted to the warrior. Breast and back plates made from metal were usually more rounded so that any weapon impacts would slide back since direct impacts could bend or compromise the plates.
    Often, if a warrior didn't use a shield the left spaulder or pauldron had an enlarged area where it met the gorget so that the soldier could turn that side towards the enemy for better protection. In keeping with this concept of different armored areas providing better protection, bracers or vambraces were made from either stiffened leather or metal and served two purposes; the first was to allow a soldier to block incoming blows by angling his forearm and allowing the weapon to slide off and it served to keep the wrists correctly in line so as to reduce the fatigue on the joints.
    The reason you see a lot of complex armor around the waist is because this is a rather difficult area to cover/protect and yet its still vital. You had tassets, which protect the thighs, and greaves which protect the shins/knees. Often the tasset plates were segmented to allow for greater movement and attached at the waist, with straps further down near the knees to adjust the fit. A central codpiece was added to further protect the groin area since it was a common target due to the presence of the femoral artery.

    I have a lot of respect for people who can draw well. My dad is actually an artist but i guess the talent isn't genetic because any time I try to sketch anything it ends up being impossible to make out over all the erased lines, and yet here you've made an excellent drawing with almost no unintended erasing. Doing what you did here would've taken me hours at best, I guess some people just aren't cut out for drawing :( also, I think the shoulder pads are also called spaulders or pauldrons.

    The things covering the helmet, I'm not so sure, but I think it might be the bevor. It's a plate meant to protect the throat and neck. It could also be a gorget.
    Contrary to what everyone is saying, the "shoulder pads" are not pauldrons. Pauldrons cover the shoulder and armpit, as well as the back sometimes. Yours are spaulders. (If using spaulders, tis a good idea to also use a besagew, a circular plate covering the armpit so you don't get your arm lanced off. It kinda looks like you've pinned a metal flower between your pecs and shoulder.)
    The chest plate = cuirass. If there's an extra layer covering the belly, that part is called the plackart.
    The part where you put chain mail, below the spaulder, is called the rerebrace. Except that it's not actually metal plate, but rather chainmail, so I dunno if you can still call it a rerebrace.
    Usually a couter comes next, the elbow pad, so to speak, though your armor has none.
    The fore-arm protector is called a vambrace, the part protecting the hand itself is a gauntlet.
    Those side-area things are called faulds, and in real armor, they aren't really on the side. They're more like a wider version of your central area. They're meant to protect both the hips and the front waist.
    The central protective shape doesn't actually exist in typical, late medieval gothic armor (According to my source wikipedia and the corresponding image). I'd call it a crotch-guard though. My personal interpretation.
    Going lower than in the video, you get variation in the legs. Chausses are chainmail pants or shorts. The poleyn is the knee-guard. The cuisse is the metal plate covering the thighs lower than what the faulds protect. The greaves are the plates covering the lower legs, and the sabaton is the metal plate covering the feet.
    Any area protected by mail instead of plate can be called gousset. Any little round plates like the besagew are called rondels (Except the besagew, because he's speshul.) Lame is a term to describe how flexible a thing is. If you have a fauld of four lame, it means that the fauld is made of four intersecting strips of metal plate.
    And there you have it. Medieval armor names.

      Place two pieces of metal edge to edge over a forge furnace. It would take a while for the metal to heat to the point of melting, but once the two touching edges both melted, they would then conjoin, therefore forming a weld.

      @shinybluesylveon8363 8 років тому

      Oh....so the same armor you would draw for a guy would be the same as armor a female would wear?

    • @marcgo3542
      @marcgo3542 8 років тому

      Thing is, females back then weren't really warriors. The most they could do is be a medic for soldiers. Basically, female armor don't exist.

    It's interessting to see, that you didn't use the typical "stick-figure" start...
    After all, having the rough proportion under the armor would probably still be useful.
    Still looks awesome!
