    Another detail I forgot to mention is that the top link needs to be 75% of the length of the bottom link. My bottom link is 20" long and the top one is 15". That is true even with a parallel 4 link.

      The days of "self-taught" like Lincoln's self taught reading so he could pass the bar exam without a law degree are long over! ...and it's a crying shame because there's an awful lot of real talent out there that goes unnoticed because people don't have deep pockets to pay for some name school!

    • @RatRodBobBuilds
      @RatRodBobBuilds  4 роки тому +41

      Ha ... it's a shame that some of these big name schools turn out some of the biggest air heads.
      True story: Back in the 80's I was working hard in construction .. in the heat and wanted to better myself and learn how to build and program computers .. so I went to every library around and checked out every book they had on the subject ( before internet ) ... bought my first computer and learned to program in PC Basic .. wrote/programmed several simple computer games ... it was like a miracle to me. My next computer was one I built from components and I learned to program in C which was before C++. In 1989 ... got injured on my heavy equipment operator construction job and had to train for another job .. which I choose computer programming. In 1990 I had to do a community college thing to get that piece of paper that said I had potential and I done an apprentice thing at a local distribution center programming in a C++ and a 4GL database language (PROGRESS 4GL). Was working next to two other guys who had bachelor degrees and was working circles around them ... they would come to me for answers. Bottom .. line ... with no degree ... 2 years later I was making $40 an hour ... 3 years later $50 and hour and $60 an hour by 1999 .. the sky was the limit. I worked coast to coast as a consultant in database design and computer program specialist for fortune 500 companies! You could only imagine how all those high class folks reacted when this guy with a strong southern accent walked in and worked circles around everyone with high degrees. It was so much fun to watch. But my true roots was in construction being outside instead of inside looking out from a high rise window. So in 2002 .. after I proved to myself that I could be/do anything I wanted .. I went back to construction (for a lot less money but much more happy) until I retired in 2014.
      So my story would be ... you can do/be anything you want if you have heart and want it bad enough and put in the work to make it happen. Also ... and most importantly ... money certainly does not make you happy. The more money I made the less happy I was .. led me to some dark places that I had to overcome if you know what I mean. Like Richard Pryor once said ... cocaine is Gods word for "you making to damn much money". End of story.

    You saved me a ton of grief with today's lesson. I am preparing to build a four link starting tomorrow. I was going to construct the parallel style. Now I'm definitely going triangulated. Locating the top link would have taken a ton of trial and error had you not shared the highly classified X marks the spot method.

    Thank You Professor Bob. You are my inspiration to build my ‘29 Dodge Brothers (what was a car) that was sectioned in the ‘40-50s to be a pickup. The question/concern is the angle of the driveshaft. In all the years of building jacked up 4x4s, I was told by a driveline shop owner that no matter what the angle of the driveshaft the most important is the angle of the transmission output shaft and the rear ended input shaft MUST be on the same plane. Or the u joints will be in a bind and Will lock and blow out. Bad things happen. Also leaf spring tear ends have a preload of about 3-5 degrees so that under load the leafsprings curl. That’s why traction bars where created.

    • @RatRodBobBuilds
      @RatRodBobBuilds  4 роки тому

      Truth be told ... point the rear end input shaft to the tranny output shaft as close as you can and call it a day. It would take a hell of an angle to bind the u-joints. I just did it this way because I can. LOL

    Bob, I know you like the Rust look but have you ever thought about painting the entire car one single color without any of the prep work ...Paint right over the rust, the dents, the scratches and the deformities to simply have a uniform color? I can see this Pick-up in a light tangerine! You don't even have to use a spray gun. I once painted an entire car with one of those red plastic handled mini-rollers and a a few quarts of Rustoleum paint. I applied the coats very thinly and after the third coat there were no drips, streaks or lines. It came out astonishingly beautiful and because the paint is a sort of filler in itself, smoothed out a lot of the anomalies!

      You would be surprised but ... since this video does not have an "eye candy" thumbnail, it's one of my least watched videos so far. Not many folks building four links. On the other hand ... the video I done a few months back with the Demon Falcon sitting in the grass looking like a Hot Wheels car on the thumbnail but no real usable content ... got viewed a lot. And the before and after video of Charlotte is my most viewed to date because the thumbnail is a before and after shot of the ole 31 Chevy. That's why a lot of guys get their hot wife or daughter(they should be ashamed) or girl friend to pose for the thumbnail. Instant views regardless of content. Clickbait is real.

The 75% is not true with parallel 4 bar, just ask Red. Get 2 Popsicle sticks and some thumbtacks and make a jig on that cardboard. I wana see Red eat a Popsicle. I look forward to more RRBB.

    Love the build I enjoy watching gives me some ideas for a couple projects I like the idea of the triangulated 4 link makes a tone of sense hyme joints would give a lot smother travel in addition to that style I think id use that in part of the combination

    • @RatRodBobBuilds
      @RatRodBobBuilds  4 роки тому

      Yes .. but you have to consider hyme's joints will wear over time but good for racing because they don't get a ton of use. As you have seen .. I used hyme's joints on the front but will have to be prepared to replace them over time. Unlike factory joints that have grease certs (well .. at least they had them back in the day .. lol). But ... if I wasn't so frugal on this build I would have used them on this 4 link too .. beings it's a Rat Rod and won't get a ton of use.

    ((😂)) Lol” gotcha Bob” I just just a long ways from getting it done yet.. them air bags looks very similar to the ones on the back of my eight bag air ride setup on back of my Kenworth simi truck .. I just wonder if them type of bags will work on the rear of my 31 Rat I’m building .. I’m just wanting to run bags only on the back of my Rod the front is setting low enough with a 4inch drop I-Beam front axle.. plans are to channel the firewall down over the frame, body with a slight tilt down at the firewall that when the rear section of body drops down it will set even on the grown .. do you have any Rat Rod ology input for me on what I’m attempting to do ?

      I call that the wheel barrow effect. Check out my first Rat Rod .. the 454 Rat Recon ... here is the playlist: ua-cam.com/video/1JCKcBif-LY/v-deo.html

    From a top view, the bottom links point somewhere towards the transmission and the top links point to the outside of the frame. How do you determine the degree angle of the top and bottom links in relation to each other? Great video Bob, school has never been so interesting.

      I just wing it. Ha ... best answer I can give. I would say mine is on about a 25-30 degree angle and I try to keep the top and bottom on the same angle .. but honestly ... I eyeball it.

    Hey Bob, always look forward to your videos. The rear suspension is looking real good! I would like to ask you what thickness of metal do you use for the tabs on the suspension? Thanks again for taking the time for schooling us in rat rodology.

      I usually use 1/4" but I used 3/16 here ... will be adding another piece to the bottom ones for bracing when I welder up. Stay tuned.
