My opinion about Maria has really changed now after this magnificent contest. She's a champion indeed and only a few of the existing players (eg. Azarenka) can contend with Serena at this high level. She's matured over time and no doubt will continue to be very successful. As for Serena, what can I say? She's shown her quality, the very highest.
I would say Maria is going through what Andy Roddick had to deal with. Roddick could have won a few more majors but Federer was just there at the finals to beat him. (Wimbledon multiple times) Sharapova is struggling to beat Serena a similar way Roddick struggled to beat Federer

There are several reasons she hasn't beaten Serena in over ten years. She isn't as great an athlete as Williams, she doesn't have nearly as great a serve, she isn't as good a mover, her net game doesn't match up well enough (are you seeing the pattern?). I'm a huge Maria Sharapova fan, to me she is always going to be my number 1, but it's extremely clear that Maria ISN'T as good as Serena. She is a level below, so it really doesn't matter what she does....as long as Williams is playing well enough the American will win. Nevertheless, Maria has worked so very hard to keep herself in contention for Slams and whether you love her or not, I think she needs to be respected for what she has done in the sport. Very few players in history have achieved what she has achieved already, and there could still be more for Maria. Sports often times is a thing of match ups. And Maria's game just doesn't match up well with Serena's. Everything that Maria does well, Serena just does it better and then some. In my estimation, she didn't play that well, I've seen Maria play much better than she did in this final. Outside of her serving Serena didn't play well either, her ground strokes were off for most of the 2nd wk of the tournament. Her serve was what really won her the tournament. Maria got away with a million 2nd serves in that 2nd set, if Serena's return game was on, that 2nd set would've been a blow out with the way Serena was serving. Plus like someone else said, she had a cakewalk to the finals. outside of Bouchard and Halep, there was nobody on that side of the draw.

In the second set, when Maria was able to get into the baseline exchanges she controlled play. She MUST find a better way to return against Serena. She's 6'2". One less error and this great match would have easily been 6-3 6-2 (or 6-4). Credit to Maria's fight but she was never in control for a sustained amount of time in this match.

I like Maria's toughness on the court of tennis. I also think that maria, as far as serena is concerned has thrown in the towel. It's no longer a physical defeat that she is suffering from Serena but mostly a mental one. For your opponent to beat you 16 times in a row and some of them not even close like the Olympic gold medal match where she was trounced, it's often hard for anyone to regroup from such.

I find it ridiculous that the Women's tennis matches are, in today's world of more equal circumstances, only two sets long. I also think that to prove one truly is a champion, three sets should have to be won, as in this final, it seemed Maria Sharapova was coming back with force, and going better as time goes on. Although it may be tradition in the sport, it would be in the athletes' and viewers' benefits to 'level the playing field' and adjust the length of women's matches to that of mens, 3 sets won for the player.

I lost any respect I had for Sharapova when she tried to run with the story the journalist LIED about. Maria was one of my favorite tennis players. I always thought she never reached her full potential but she always gave her best and did a lot to promote the game. I enjoyed her playing very much.

Sports often times is a thing of match ups. And Maria's game just doesn't match up well with Serena's. Everything that Maria does well, Serena just does it better and then some. In my estimation, she didn't play that well, I've seen Maria play much better than she did in this final. Outside of her serving Serena didn't play well either, her ground strokes were off for most of the 2nd wk of the tournament. Her serve was what really won her the tournament. Maria got away with a million 2nd serves in that 2nd set, if Serena's return game was on, that 2nd set would've been a blow out with the way Serena was serving. Plus like someone else said, she had a cakewalk to the finals. outside of Bouchard and Halep, there was nobody on that side of the draw.

One less error and this great match would have easily been 6-3 6-2 (or 6-4). Credit to Maria's fight but she was never in control for a sustained amount of time in this match.
Perhaps she hasn't won since 2005 but at least she gave her best every time / could be not enough but I'm proud of the effort she put in. She competed and that's what the most important. I like Maria's toughness on the court of tennis. I also think that maria, as far as serena is concerned has thrown in the towel. It's no longer a physical defeat that she is suffering from Serena but mostly a mental one. For your opponent to beat you 16 times in a row and some of them not even close like the Olympic gold medal match where she was trounced, it's often hard for anyone to regroup from such.

I find it ridiculous that the Women's tennis matches are, in today's world of more equal circumstances, only two sets long.
I also think that to prove one truly is a champion, three sets should have to be won, as in this final, it seemed Maria Sharapova was coming back with force, and going better as time goes on.
Although it may be tradition in the sport, it would be in the athletes' and viewers' benefits to 'level the playing field' and adjust the length of women's matches to that of mens, 3 sets won for the player.

I lost any respect I had for Sharapova when she tried to run with the story the journalist LIED about. How are you going to allow a journalist who took a wild guess at who Serena was talking about in a private conversation to make you try and come against a fellow player? It was disgusting and vile what the journalist did b/c Serena wouldn't tell him who she was talking about. Serena went to Maria as a woman but Maria went on a public rampage and had the nerve to claim so many people was happy about that. From what I see, most people on tour don't even like Sharapova. Also, Maria makes more excuses for lost matches than ANY player. She waits months later and then claim she had an injury. There are so many matches that she does this. People seem to not harp on that b/c she's Maria, but she's very sneaky and she will hold up players during a match to throw them off.
