  • In the video I ride a 2022 Road Glide Special with the stage III 122 kit. I rode a new Lowrider S with the same kit and have since called it my favorite cubic inch size in a Harley. After riding the FLTRXS which is a much heavier bike, I stand by that statement.
If you're interested in this bike it is available at the time of this video going up.

The 122 kit really delivers the torque where most of us older long-distance riders live and that's between 2500 and 3500 RPM, just about perfect for a touring bike.

I like the stage 3 119/122. You get the bigger 4.155 bores for cubes & flow for easier cylinder fill without being so thin that it has less material for heat dissipation. And cylinders that when overheated go out round so easily as with the 4.310 128/131. You also get the 11-1 pistons for better efficiency and utilizing more cam.
Harley designed a cam for the stage 3 (114/117s) being the SE-498 cam. Oddly they now hold it back with the SE-447 torque cam designed for stock compression motors. I would swap for the better cam & springs if I were buying another stage 3 kit.
Unlike the stage 4 cam that trades bottom end torque for a little high rpm power. The stage 3 cam retains bottom end torque and adds top end power just a little less than the stage 4 cam. More friendly for day to day & in town. My emissions & warranty compliant stage 3 with the SE-498 made 118 HP 122TQ. So a little less than the stage 4 kits but a lot less money & labor. More importantly daily rider friendly & reliable.
    37k miles on my stage 3 & 498 cam & zero issues.

I think the 122 is right in that optimal power range for a touring bike to have both performance and the ability to still go on long trips.

I have had 3 Harleys in my life and 1 honda Goldwing. I have never done any motor work other than installing a larger air intake and mufflers for a little more sound and with that, I have ridden all over the country carefree. To me, an upgrade to a Harley Davidson is religious oil changes, brake pad changes, and tires along with washing the bugs off.

The Stage 3 and Stage 4 kits look nice and sound nice on paper. However, I think they’re kinda a waste of money. Because realistically you’ll never be able to utilize all that power on public roads. That’s why I’ll prolly only go as high as a stage 2. Stage 2 gets you a decent spread of power, without severely compromising fuel economy.

Now in 2023 these kits seem hard to find, HD wants to sell the really big ones, but I prefer the “usable power” you talk about here. I just bought the kit and am excited to get it installed. It may be a bit expensive for many people but it is cheaper than buying one of the new big baggers!

The 131 I tried was also on a Road Glide Special. It's fun, a lot of fun so don't get me wrong. It's just so much I can't see it being practical in the curves or mountains. For me I'd feel confident saying I'd be faster time wise on the same course with the 122. Straight line the 131 would eat it. Red light to red-light would be the same as long as you get traction lol. To me a 122 and some high end suspension would never leave you wanting more.
Thanks! I had a 3rd camera angle but felt that was too choppy. Gonna try and make it work so future test rides are more interesting to watch!
