Thanks for the video. I have found that over the years, there are many people who will argue over the actual use of the two terms line-breeding verses in-breeding. I like to think of in-breeding as a general term that refers to any kind of breeding in which the two animals (fish included) are actually related in some way. Whereas line-breeding is typically used to denote a specific type of in-breeding, namely, the father-daughter or father-granddaughter, mother-son, type of matings in which an attempt is being made to get specific genes fixed or made stronger to really bring out a specific characteristic. In fish, this might be long fins, or a color, or even a behavior. In general, however, brother-sister matings are what we most often do since we often acquire our fish from the same spawn. There is so much to be said on this subject, but the main key is ALWAYS use the best of the progeny and never use the weaker, inferior or deformed fish in your breeding projects as that will only result in more of the same. (BTW, the word incest is most appropriate when used as a moral reference with regards to humans, but it has no meaning with animals. However, I understand you're merely using an analogy here.) Keep up informative content.
Exactly even in my own head I argued those points and it’s very difficult to draw the line between the two lol talk soon Micheal and thank you for the amazing content ur self 🙏
Outcrossing keeps things nice and genetically diverse, as long as a line receives new blood periodically it will remain strong. Culling helps too. I just wished that breeders would make it more obvious that they outcross and maintain a genetically diverse breeding group. I’m always left wondering if the fish are bred irresponsibly.
theres a guy that explained betta genetics and he explains all the breeding including when they outcross, and ive been watching and it seems like they do it with every 2 generations
Hi, can you please let me know what type of wooden planks you use for your fish tank? I can't find anything helpful online, and would like to do this idea for my tank to optimise more space and have more areas for my corydoras to rest - Thank you!!
In other animals like cats, not supposed to inline breed side to side. Inline breeding is up and down genetically strengthen the superior characteristics. This is father to daughter or mother and son
Hi I just found this video looking for information on inbreeding offspring back to parents in fish in general. It just so happens I am also breeding Long Fin Veiltail Marble Angelfish. What are some things to watch out for in breeding the first generation offspring directly back with one of the parents?
Crossbreeding leads to hardy fish and diversity in future generations. I love crossbreeding and stabalizing. Oftentimes in future generations mutations show up as well. I have some near dorsalless, lyretail, spade short body chili endlers showing up. This was after a few generations of selection after crossbreeding to a tottally different chili line. Can't wait to see how the next gen show up! The near dorsalless trait appears to be codominant. So next generation I hopefully will have fully dorsalless fish. The females prefer the mutant males to all the others. A short body, dorsalless endler selectively bred to be thcker wpuld be something like a nankin goldfish.
From what I understand, what you did was outcross not line breeding. Line breeding from what I understand, is when you take a spawn of fish let’s use guppies for example and take let’s say 6 females and 2 males from that spawn. You split those fish up 3 females 1 male in one tank and the other 3 females 1 male in another tank. So technically you have 2 lines going but from the same spawn. Those fish you separated have separate spawns. Then you take the best males and females from those 2 separate lines of spawns and cross them. You continue this process for generation after generation and only picking fish of the highest quality and traits. This is line breeding. The fish are all related but are technically from 2 separate lines you created from the initial first spawn.
Just saw your Vice Episode! Once I buy my home, I'm buying my first fishes from you! Keep it up Brotha! 🙏🏽

Cannot inline breed brother to sister, defects and deformities occur
