  • We’re back with another of our Five Minute Histories videos and this one features WJZ & TV Hill! Join us to hear about the candelabra antenna that sits on the top of that hill and how WJZ got started. We are also thrilled to be joined by Siobhan Hagan, President of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Moving Image Archive (MARMIA, marmia.org). This non-profit collects its own archival material and helps others with their unique audio-visuals. Its largest acquisition is the WJZ collection! See their digitized collections here: archive.org/de.... Thanks for watching and we’ll see you soon with another video!
This is our series called "Five Minute Histories." We record short videos about different historic places all over Baltimore and post them on our Facebook page, UA-cam channel, and website. For more information or to become a member of Baltimore Heritage, check out: baltimoreherit...

Awesome segment as always, but the MARMIA piece was exceptional, what a great archive of Baltimore history!

When I was much younger, I met a man who was a painter on that tower. He told us that as soon as they were finished, they would start all over again. Painting was a non-stop job.

There’s a slight error here at the 3:15 mark regarding WJZ and CBS. Westinghouse never sold the station to CBS. They signed an agreement with CBS to make all of their stations into CBS affiliates. About a year after they signed that agreement, Westinghouse bought CBS outright, and so WJZ became a CBS owned-and-operated station.

An answer to the first discussion question at the end would be when Sacramento's 3 network affiliates went in on a similar candelabra tower in nearby Walnut Grove. The tower agreement was signed in 1958, and the stick for KCRA-TV, KXTV, and KOVR went up in 1959. Construction was completed in 1961, and transmission from it began in 1962.

To go back even further, the WJZ call letters started out in Newark, NJ as the original call letters for what became 77 WABC.

The clip at 8:12 features a nice shot of what Camden Yards looked like before the ballpark was built

Awesome! Sounded like Chuck Thompson doing commentating on the 1959 Baltimore film. Any idea?
