Oorah brother. Similar background. It never really got to me, we usually only fought people that were in the fight on the other side. Not a lot of gray area stuff. Ugly always but made it simpler. But I don't talk about it with any people outside close friends or family. Not an embarrassed thing or guilt. But when the Marines and our other branches are hitting on all cylinders in combined arms, we're the deadliest military thats ever walked this planet. We can go out there and justifiably kill people wholesale. I often say we don't fight fair ever, we fight to win. Rolling in under nvgs or thermals, circling air with a-10's, 130 gunships, cobras, artillery and mortar support...its premeditated killing. Just the way we like it. People outside the service have serious problems hearing the how....they're very happy to hear we win or are successful. But believe there should be some marquis of queensbury rules and it should be a "fair" fight. The moment that did it for me was at college after, not even a liberal school. Big ten. It was in a sociology class and another Marine was in there, the teacher asked why they didnt try to wound guys, not kill them. He responded because they were firing machine guns at them. Injuring and killing some people with them, and they were dropping mortars. When the teacher went ok but did you need to....he didnt just stared back and my mouth was open to, it was like we were on a different planet. Not a single student raised a hand or said anything. A looking at him for an answer to justify it. He got up and walked out i was shortly behind him. Over a liquid lunch we hashed out that these and most people aren't Marines or soldiers. You'd get a thank you for your service that I think is truly genuine. They like the us being powerful. But dont understand how thats acomplished. In most of the world that power comes from the barrel of a gun.
Hearing this dude talk about the toll it took on him is rough to hear. I know jsoc or tf guys that did multiple swat style raids nightly for months with no downtime. Every one of those was killing or taking away family members or friends right in front of their eyes. Doing that rotation after rotation of high profile or high risk operations constantly is something I could relate to the way those students looked at us and didnt understand. I mean I know to a point how incredible a feat that is and understand the risk. But I could never begin to imagine the toll that has to take on your very being or soul. Thats a helluva sacrafice on the behalf of others.

Never heard him being this candid before. Hopefully people will let up a bit on him for the recent troubles with alcohol he's had. Its not even just the reality of killing. A lot of its the way they were killing. Offensively, premeditatedly, and without direct immediacy to the crime. For example, threatening armed robber breaks into your house at night and you're forced to kill him. You personally saw the man who was guilty, had a direct link to the crime, and took necessary defensive action. No harm no foul. I mean the guys who flew the planes into the towers all died the day they did it. Now youre effectively just murdering random guys sleeping in their beds in the house you just broke into in the country you just invaded based simply off some intel from higher-ups in the chain of command you received. The entire nature of modern war fighting is unnatural and will mess with anyones mind because it is messed up. People left without choice to kill defensively arent haunted by those ghosts I'd wager. All these veteran suicides should be a wake up call that what we're doing is immoral. You don't have that otherwise.

Everyone gives these tier 1 operators admiration for their skills, but seem to forget what those skills are honned to do. The SEAL teams are technically just highly trained hitmen when you strip it down to its core. Much respect for their resolve and determination to win, not to mention their motivational and anecdotal experiences to help others through tough situtations. No doubting that. However, envying the amount of blood, death and utter carnage these operators caused is not glamorous nor deserving of praise. The bad dudes are the bad dudes because some other dudes say so and send some really bad dudes to execute target packages. The only way to walk away fom that with any piece of your soul left is anyone's guess. You really have to BELIEVE that the tasks you executed were RIGHT and VALID in order to really get any sleep or function because Rob is right, it's absolutely unnatural to KILL people, nevermind KILLING people in great volumes by your own hands.

SEAL command just seems to prioritize the diva "I'm awesome and tough" mentality, and the rest is just a crap shoot. There are clearly SEALs that are solid dudes, but the other units really seem to value professionalism and maturity way more and it shows.

I was in 12 years nine of those years in a SMU constantly deployed. NFQ - Never Fu$king Quit is drilled into us until it becomes a cornerstone of who you are. It works while you are in on active duty surrounded by your team and support network but in the civilian world it causes you all kinds of problems.

I think everyone reading this narrative should find some way not to judge. I, and three of my brothers, were in the military. My older brothers, one was a Master Chief, the other a Captian; both worked with nukes, and the burden of what they had to do, if called upon, was seemingly, unthinkable. They both told me, 'they had a duty'. In the Old Testement, those that fought in battles, had to retreat to private camps for 7 days to remove their bloodied selves from their bretheren (and relieve their own minds) from the acts they committed. Excuse yourself, excuse the acts you were tasked to commit, and rejoin society. There were numerous WWII vets at my church when I was a youngster, and a teen, they all felt 'they had a job to do, and did it'. For the few that did speak of their activities, they kept their eyes cast down, and then stubbed out their cigarettes, and went back into the church to sing in the choir: they spoke of 'machine guns rattling to empty, hand to hand clashed, planes crashing, ships sinking and jumping into oceans of fire for survival'. It would be hard for any of us to understand what you and they faced. One European theathre vet was a BAR man; celebrated as a Hero; he killed dozens; was even honored by the Germans who finally took him in a last-standing-fight, whereas he even took out an armored vehicle sent in to finish him off; they called 'Ein Soldat'! Yet, he only ever spoke about the one man he didn't save; his best friend shot by a sniper. Peace.

I was never in combat, but taking the life of a grown man in his thirties still haunts me to this day. For years following, it's all I'd think about and it would replay over and over in my opinion is our brain's way of coping with it and trying to understand it so it doesn't happen again. So I use this anecdote because it makes me reflect on the guys that have been in combat, that have seen kids screaming with their parents blown up infront of them, people burned alive and their screams, the smell, your buddy's leg hanging off, etc. Unless you're a psychopath, killing will haunt you for the rest of your life.
There is no one mentally tougher than the ones that have lost their loved ones due to people like this guy and still learn to forgive.
He fought for freedom and for America, he is a true warrior.

My father lives with guilt every day because of what he did in Korea. I deal with the guilt I have from the military and law enforcement. People need to understand what we did and what we deal with.
