The atmosphere of the forest is very interesting, like in the Jurassic Park movie. looks from the top of the hill so beautiful scenery. good luck and good health always... 😊👍👍👏
The old north south track starts up near the top of the falls and is quite scenic. Ive taken that route to puketutu once and there are views to the south. I would love to see a photo of what the old hut looked like. It was supposed to have burned down from what I was told. BTW that square patch is actually the helipad, its advised not to pitch your tent there incase a chopper needs to land, believe it or not, we had one land once at hurunui hut and lots of people pitch their tents on that pad!
Yes, I have walked the old track, at least in part to Pukututu, and you're right about the views. Staying on a heli pad can be interesting. I once had to bail from the tent and move quickly when a copter came in. It was close to night, so I thought I was right. Thanks for correcting me about the square patch. That makes sense to me. Do you know where in the clearing the hut was sited?
@@OAPAdventures I have a general idea but never saw the hut to know 100% for sure. I believe it was near the helipad end which was the end closest to the wairere track. There is also a stream down that end, it looks like you camped near to where we camped with the stream nearby? There was a bit of debris from the hut still around last time I was there, bits of roofing and broken up concrete was in the aera but may be hard to find if the grass is long.
@@nzoomed Cheers. I saw the stream and had a walk around, but Im thinking that all trace must have gone. It must be years since the hut was there. I camp in the clearing about once a year, so I'll have a look at that end next time.
@@OAPAdventures sounds good. I believe the hut burned down a good 30 years or more ago, it was very close to the falls, so got alot of people up from the road. You likely noticed the sheer amount of rubbish dumped in that aera too. Sadly it's the same all around the hurunui hut, we found sacks full of rubbish in the vicinity of the hut when we went looking for firewood. I would be keen to see you do a video on the salvation hut someday, there are other huts hidden in the kaimais too that i know of but don't know their exact location.
@@nzoomed I have a plan to go Salvation, and I tried and failed with a mate, about a year ago. We and got beaten by the weather. I did promise I wouldnt go there without the same mate, so just waiting until we are both available to go. I did do a video on the "DB" hut in the pines at Killarney Lakes a while ago. If you do have any idea where there are others to visit, I would love to know.
Great little adventure. May I ask how you managed transport? I'm always concerned about leaving my car at the trailhead. I'm planning an overnighter tenting in the Kaimai's, do you have a recommended spot? Was thinking under the trees at the old Waitawheta hut site but this one looks good too. Appreciate your advice Peter. btw, I've been receiving your business emails for a few years, only recently realised that it was the same bloke I follow on youtube.
I parked at the Falls carpark overnight and was dropped at the start of the Te Tuhi track for this walk. @@OAPAdventures Thanks for the tips. I might stick to the Waitawheta campsite then as I'm planning a pre xmas trip and I'm not sure I'm fit enough for the uphill slog yet. I'm a bit of a snail with my short legs. Looking forward to watching your next adventure, no doubt showcasing all your trangia goodies.
I dont have any GPS cords, only these approx directions. At the junction of the Wairere Track and North/South Track, head north on the Nth/Sth tk. Cross a bridge over a small creek (its in the video) and not much further look for a small clearing on the right. The large tree you see in the video is in the clearing. Walk through the small clearing to the larger clearing on the right of the tree. You should be fine, its reasonably easy to see. Both clearings show on the sat photos overlaid on the topo maps on the Doc site. The creek shows on the topo map. Thanks for watching.
Have you been kicked out of home son? Look at you getting around! Would you DM me a screenshot of that clearing and tree location please Pete,, the falls are on my to-do list, it's just that you're betting me to everything ;-) Nice journal.
Im glad I walked down the falls track. If I was going up, I would still be there! Back to work today, so invested in a bar of soap and a razor, but not soon enough for my last trip. DM to follow.
It is a lovely walk eh, and my tramping buddy and I were saying how cool it would be to camp in the clearing too. 😊 We enjoyed our picnic lunch in there, and explored around the several clearing areas. 🏕️ The deer carcass was completely gone except for the skull and a couple of bones when we went up recently, Sept 22.
@@GypsyGirl317 Yes, its a nice place. Im planning on another trip to the clearing and will camp there. Not sure when, but its too nice a place not to go back. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the sub.

Great video Peter. Tent looked great in the clearing. Cheers
Yep, Len at www.intentsoutdoors.co.nz does a great tent, as you know.
Your big tree at 9.30 is a Kahikatea. The Wairere falls need to be visited after heavy rain. It's visible from way out on the plains.
Ive seen it regularly from Matamata in winter in full flood.
